Making a Kiln Shelf with SilkeMat
Переглядів 3,1 тис.Рік тому
With the high price of kiln shelves (and fiber paper), SilkeMat offers a unique alternative (think Vitrigraph shelf too). A special Thank You to Janie Barbata Duke (Glass Duchess Studio) who gave me the idea and the encouragment to explore it.
SilkeMat Vitrigraph or Pot Melt mold

This video was done a couple of years ago and I've learned that twisting anything plastic or metal will make a beautiful hole in your molds without drilling. There wasn't a way to update that info on this video, but the Jellyfish Drip Mold shows that process.

Sewing SilkeMat is a breeze! And the mold stays together for many many firings. The thread does not spall and allows you to do intricate mold making.

A short demo on how I cut circles. One thing I forgot to mention is when you flip the glass over to run the scoreline, flip it back to the score side and press around the line again. You should do this for circles since it has a tendency to "catch".
SilkeMat "Jellyfish" Drip Mold

Laser version of the drip (jellyfish) mold I made from SilkeMat. For Celsius fusers, there is an error in the cool down schedule. 800F should read 427C. I can't change the video and thankfully, an astute fuser caught it. Apologies!

Cutting Float Glass
Переглядів 11 тис.8 років тому
Cutting float glass is much the same as cutting art glass, but thicker float sometimes requires a different approach.
Hi Barbara what do you mean in the schedule when you say “full” is that full fuse temp? For my glass (bullseye) it would be 1490?
"Full" refers to the ramp speed. AFAP, 9999 would be the same thing.
I can!! ❤😂❤
I’m going to make a SilkMat mold for a 8x9” rectangle. I’m doing a drip out vase so the glass is 15mm. Can I cut out the hole beforehand so I’m not using as much ridgidizer? How wide should the edges be to hold the glass while it drops. Thank you!
Yes. And I suggest prefiring the SilkeMat so it shrinks and stiffens. Then rigidize.
I have my first one in the kiln. It’s just not dropping down much. I’ve increase the temp by 20 degrees and keep adding time. I’m up to 80 minutes. They are starting to fall because the holes are caving in some. I’ll just keep watch it I guess. Not sure how much more to increase temp.
It sounds like your holes may be too small for the glass to flow. What is your top temp?
@ Top temp was 1375. Now I missed adding additional time so it’s on its way to anneal. The holes are what you recommended on your video. I think the problem is my new larger kiln. Can I leave it in and start it over tomorrow. What scedual would you recommend I might try. Thanks for the help.
Sorry another question. Did you treat the 4” kiln stands? If not, won’t the glass stick to them as it drips down?
If you think they will be in the way, coat with kiln wash. Since I keep my SilkeMat in a square, I have corners to support the kiln posts and keep them out of the way.
Thank you
Doesnt spall in the kiln. Yo
Sorry one more question. I watched your video again. Thank you for doing it. I’m ready to pre-fire my Matt today but now worried because I only ridgidized the circle where my glass will sit. Should I have done the whole matte? I see where you did one with just the circle so glass could run over the edges. If I leave it, should I cut the 8” square down a little. I hope this message make sense. Thanks again
Wherever the SilkeMat is soft, the glass will drop down with weight and gravity. Won't hurt a thing. BTW, I am having a SilkeMat flash sale on my bjcashman website, if you're interested.
@ Yes, I’ll go on. Now I want more Matte
Just ordered but something went wrong. I only wanted the $60.00 +$10.00 but my PayPal came back $175.00. Was there something else in my cart I wasn’t aware of? Can you fix it? Thank you
I see the problem. Last month I was going to order the products from your site but I ended up at Delphi because the could send the 4inch posts. I forgot to cancel the cart. I don’t need anything other than the flash sale Matte. Thanks
@@barbaracashman Did you get my message re: the mistake on my order? I only want the 2 with one free, $60.00 plus the $10.00 flat postage. The remainder was items in my cart I no longer wanted. Thank you. Marge Steother
When you added the powder for the blue tint did you just add it between layers of glass like you do for bubbles?
Yes.
Thank you, I just got everything and applied the solution to the silkeMat last night. I’m letting it dri before pre heating in the kiln. It’s drying light in color. Is that correct?
Yes, it is grayish in color when dried. It turns brown and becomes much harder when cured at fusing temps.
@@barbaracashman Thank you for your reply. I love your work. Can’t wait to try it.
Thank you for the video. I’ve ordered everything to try this. Two questions, you say use 6 pieces of glass. How thick 2mm or 6mm. Also it looks like you made your holes prior to making it ridged but the directions say to heat and set first.
@@margestrother7269 I used 6 pieces of 3mm glass. The SilkeMat was prefired. You can make this holes before or after rigidizing (dried). Just run a finger wet with rigidizer around the inside of the hole to seal any loose fibers. Make sense?
Thanks Barbara! Thats awesome!
You are so welcome!
I wonder if using the rigidizer alone as a skim coat on a kiln shelf would work?!? Also, have you tested how many times the surface can be used before it starts failing to release?
I have tried it, and honestly, kiln wash made for this purpose is a better choice.
If I rigidize silkemat will Spectrum or BE stick to it at 1450 degrees full fuse? I want to use silkemat as a glass releaser instead of fiber paper. Do I need to add an additional glass release?
I need to make a shelf that is 24"x 24". Would I need to use more than two layers of silkemat? For example, could I use 3 or even four layers of silkemat? I'm needing a sturdy shelf, that I'd like to use for test making a fused piece of about 20" x 20" of tack fused glass ranging from 8 to 12mm thick.
With that weight, I would suggest more than 2 layers. The corners would be the most fragile. So it depends on how you want to pick it up. Also, a layer of papyros or Thinfire.
hi, where can i purchase the buttons for snapping glass cuts?
bjcashman.com
This is great.
Thank you.
Is silkemat available in different thicknesses?
Have you or anyone ever done any tests to see if this product could be used for ceramic firing?
Are you asking about the top temp? SilkeMat is rated at 1000C (@1850F)
What did you use as a ridgideizer
I apologize for the delay. I had trouble logging into the site to answer you. The rigidizer is my formula and is sold as "SilkeMat Rigidizer" in liquid and powder form.
HI Barbara, I'm making my first SilkMat mold. It is a simple arched mold to bend (8) 4" x 12" pieces of colored glass. The glass is part of the border of an arched stained glass window. I'm concerned about the mold shrinking and not sure how to preshrink the SilkMat before creating the mold. Can I preshrink the SilkMat in my kitchen oven? If so, what temperature should I use? I do have access to glass fusing kiln if I need to use that. You video is very helpful Best regards Tony
Hi Tony. FYI, complete instructions for SilkeMat &SilkeMat Rigidizer is on the SilkeMat.com site. Vent your kiln and fire to 1450F for 30 minutes. That's all. Don't put on a kiln shelf unless you fire slower than 9999. AFAP will Crack your shelf. Did that answer your question?
I'm finally ready to use my silkmat. Quick question. Once u spread the rigidizer on both sides, do u let it dry in the same tray or do u transfer it to a fresh tray to air dry. If so, do I have to line the new "drying" tray with something like parchment paper or saran wrap, or spray it w Pam to facilitate release when it's dry. Thanks in advance fe
Sorry I missed this question. You can spread out on aluminum foil, if you wish.
Actually? Does this work with glass?
Not sure what you mean, but it is a shelf for glass fusing.
I am going to use this silkemat to shape a 6mm thick project, approx. 35cmx45cm, 10 cm deep. Is one layer silkemat strong enough, or do you advice me to make a mold using 2 layers?
I'm sorry I didn't get an alert on this question. One layer has always been strong enough. I'm assuming your glass is no more than 2 layers.
Thank you for your answer below! More questions. Could you rigidize just one side if forming it OVER rather than INTO something as you demonstrated on video? And if so, I am assuming the side that is wet from rigidizer would go against the mold, not the dry side? Lastly, I plan to create my "mold" from thick fiber paper that will be on aluminum foil that I will put the wet silkemat with rigidizer onto. Then transfering it to the kiln to dry in kiln at 150 degrees. Is there a problem keeping it on aluminum foil at 150 in kiln? Assuming not, as we bake with foil at much higher temperatures?
Yes, you are absolutely right. I use aluminum foil a lot for just that purpose. Are you on FB "SilkeMat Tips & Techniques "? Would love to see pics of what you create.
OK, good to know on foil! Can you address my questions on rigidizing one side? Unfortunately, my FB account was hacked a few months ago and FB closed my access! Very upsetting as the hacker made it look like I was the imposter. I lost everything - 12 years of history, photos.... I will email you any photos of what I make, if I am successful!@@barbaracashman
No, it's on my site: bjcashman.com
Is there a different website you keep referring to? Please add links to “your website” where you sell products. The SilkeMat sight I found only refers to distributors and is quite limited on what I’m finding on it.
Ah Ha, did a google search of your actual name and found the site. You need to put links in your video description that can lead potential customers to your site.
I don’t see the SS thread on your website at all. I’ve not seen it for sale where I buy my other SilkeMat products. Is this thread no longer available? Is there an equivalent available elsewhere online? Thanks.
I replied on my phone, don't know why it isn't here. SS thread is available on my retail site: www.bjcashman.com
On Amazon there are silicone sheets for sale that are shiny on one side (matte on the other). I wonder if you could use those instead of the foil? Should be easy to get off and give you a very smooth surface.
Absolutely. I now use those sheets for classes, but hadn't discovered them when I made this video.
can silkmat be re-ridigized
Yes and No. If your mold has only been dried and not fired, then it is easy to rehydrate with more Rigidizer (not water). If your mold has been fully fired and cured, it really doesn't want to absorb more rigidizer--UNLESS it has been lightly applied and there is still soft SilkeMat inbetween. Regardless, it is best to rehydrate at the dry stage instead of the cured stage. Make sense?
Depends on how "sopped" it is. You really don't need to saturate. I put outside in nice weather. You can put in a warm kiln if your model will handle it, at about 150F for several hours.
Hi Barbara! How long does the rigidizer take to air dry? I have had it sitting over the "mold" for about 24 hours and still pretty sopped.
I don't know why my answer isn't here, since I know I answered it. Set in a warm kiln (150-200F) for a few hours. Dry slowly or it could warp.
I invite you to join Facebook "SilkeMat Tips & Techniques". That will tell you a lot. PS..Answer the questions.
Your amazing! Any updates? I have a ton of fiber blanket,, any ideas on how to use it with your stuff?
I invite you to join Facebook "SilkeMat Tips & Techniques". PS...be sure to answer the questions.
Can you full fuse on the silkeMat shelf?
Yes, but at full fuse, I would use Thinfire or Papyros on top of the board.
In the video, your demo pieces were full fused, but you did not say you used thin fire or papyrus. Which is correct, your video or your reply above? 7:56
At what temperature do you fire the rigidized mold to cure it if the silke mat was not pre fired?
Prefiring and curing temperatures are the same.
how many firings do you think it would last?
That all depends on what glass you are using & how high (opals will stick at fusing temps).
Barb< i just watched this and your video on how to make a pot for pull glass thru, did u have to use zyp on the one u used to pull glass thru? did all the glass come out? ive been using the silke mat for designs in terracotta pots to pull thru .Lots of un-redeemeable glass sticks to the bottom, but not on the silkemat. was wondering if u have also had that problem???
I actually replied on my phone, but I don't see it here. No ZYP. It can contaminate your glass, so no. Glass pops out. Not particularly usable, but the mold is clean to use again.
what does your glass look like after being pulled???
I just saw your question. I'm not sure what you are asking. Glass is no different than from any other mold.
I think they are wanting to know how your pull went? @@barbaracashman
@bf5897 Yeah...not sure what i was thinking when I answered that. Actually did not do a pull. But it would have turned out just like any other mold--except the glass would pop out.
u need a 1 inch bit. looking at all your other things u have made, thanks for sharing this. 2nd time ive watched u do this, wont be the last time either
I discovered much later in working with SilkeMat that there are easier ways to do something--especially holes. If you watched my Jellyfish" video, you'll see some of the things I now use to make holes. No more drill.
Silkemat texture got reflected in glass. How do I remove the residue of silkemat from glass? I so far soaked in the vinegar and used the green scrubbie. And of course it is hard to access the area between the "legs"... Please help!
Anna, I'm not sure what happened. What was your top temperature? Did you rigidize the mold? If so, did you sand? Or is this raw SilkeMat? A stiff wire brush usually handles any residue.
QUESTION: I have some large pieces of float glass. Could I put the rigidized shelf onto the glass as my ultra-flat background without needing the aluminum foil?
I'm not sure what you mean. Are you trying to dry? I only used the foil because the shelf was porous. Your glass alone will be fine. Lightly spray with vegetable oil to keep from sticking when drying.
Yes, during drying. I was wondering whether I'd need the foil if I sandwiched the SilkeMat between two sheets of glass to keep the SilkeMat flat, then the weights on top@@barbaracashman
This is incredibly ingenious! Thank you for coming up with this. I will be trying this out soon.
Thank you! Best sure to join FB "SilkeMat Tips &Techniques" to see all kinds of things they are doing with SilkeMat.
Very interesting. Once you have the completed shelf do you need to use kiln wash or shelf paper with it?
I haven't. But it really depends on what you're firing on it and how hot. Opals will still have a tendency to stick.
Could you use the Rigidizer on a regular kiln shelf or refractory board to create a super smooth surface? @@barbaracashman
@shericoughlin9203 the rigidizer is not a kiln wash, so no to shelf. However, you might use it to rigidize a fiberboard. Worth a test.
Love this and makes me think I can use to PRESS my glass between 2 pieces of silkmat…has anyone done this please let me know. Thanks Barbara for the idea
I really don't know. I would love to know what happens when you try it. I would suggest you do a test piece first to be sure it doesn't stick or mar in any way. Good luck!
@@barbaracashman Thanks ..I will certainly test first
Fantastic. thanks. I've just started using Silkematt! When you use it as a shelf do you still place it on small posts so there is air underneath? TIA
For some reason, I see your question was never answered. I sincerely apologize. I'm supposed to be given post notices. Answer is "Yes".
Fantastic. thanks. I've just started using Silkematt! When you use it as a shelf do you still place it on small posts so there is air underneath? TIA
It's a good idea. However, be sure to place several small posts evenly under the edges and center so it doesn't warp during firing. Make sense?
@barbaracashman Thanks. That does make sense. I have a very heavy full shelf that I can not lift in and out without help. A Silkemat shelf will be great to build on to transfer into the kiln.
Thank you for that video. That covered most of my questions, so I am going to include some SilkeMat and rigidizer with my glass order. Plan on making a kiln shelf with some alteration to the process you used. I noticed the shelf sanded very easily, I assume it will be more difficult to sand after it has been fired, and actually that would be a good thing. In all your experiments have you tried plastic wrap (kitchen type stuff on a roll) stretched and taped to a piece of heavy float glass for the top and bottom.
Thank you, Bill. Good suggestions. Sanding, however, is very easy after it's fired. Just fire SLOWLY so it doesn't warp unless you are firing just dried with a glass project.
Thanks! I needed a primer on using the rigidizer. I've only been using my SilkeMat without the rigidizer so far.
Oh my. I do have an older video on the Rigidizer, but be sure and ask any questions. You can also join Facebook "SilkeMat Tips & Techniques".
@@barbaracashman I'm a member and have gotten new info as of July 17, 2023.
@@lindaclasson1088 Absolutely! Saw your name after I had answered, oops...
how long does shelf last?
I really don't know. It will depend on what you fire on it and the top temperature. It will eventually break down at high Temps and opal glass.
What is the drying time? While being pressed.
It really all depends on the size and relative humidity. It took me 3 days for a small shelf. Of course, the sooner you can remove the weights it will dry much faster. Just be careful of warping.
Wow thank you! Very cool!
Glad you liked it!
