  • @fretless05
    @fretless05 Місяць тому

    Like many tool these days, it wouldn't surprise me if these Bauer chucks were made in the same factory as some of the bigger named brands' chucks. They seem to be quality chucks and should last, so I see no need to replace them. If anything, use the low price and HF's sales to buy several to keep various size jaw sets on them because it does get old taking jaws off and pitting others on for projects.

    • @chrisgiftshop3127

      @fretless05 oh I have seen many companies using the same factories to make different products for different companies. My old HF lathe is the exact model as one of Grizzly's lathes only difference is the name on it.

    Nice looking pen. I was worried that the CA would fix the bushings to the blank, but they look to have come out just fine. I assume you wanted to moss to show more. 2 ideas for you. 1. Don’t use such solid colors. Make your resin more translucent. 2. Use more moss. In fact, I would suggest mixing the moss/resin before you put it into the mold. Should probably seem more like moss coated resin than resin with some moss. Just something to think about. Nicely done.

    The coloring looks pretty good. The bowl as a whole is very nice. I’ve used a couple cans of that Krylon finish and do not like it. I would suggest allowing the embellishing wax to dry over night then applying your high gloss wax over it. That tool you showed and called your nobly bowl gouge I’m not so sure it’s not actually a spindle gouge. The square nose you have on it is not a good thing either. Maybe after my car is repaired we can arrange a day or 2 for me to come over and help you out a bit. Your on a good path. I just think you need some hands on coaching. We can talk about it in a few weeks after the car is fixed.

      Doug thank you. I always appreciate your advice. My shop/garage is a mess at the moment as I am trying to focus on organizing it around work and my videos so maybe down the road we can work something out. Would be cool to meet you either way. As for the chisel, I only called it a bowl gouge because when I bought the set it came in that's what they had labeler it. I need to resharpen some of my tools so last time I tried sharpening it I may have goofed it up some and ended up with a square end. I think giving the wax more time to dry may have been a better way to go as well. I did like that high gloss look the clear coat gave it, maybe I can find something other than krylon next time that will work well. Thanks for watching and commenting. Always appreciate your feedback.

    Nice bowl. Just a tip. Don't spin your bowl and spray. Fast dry finishes don't like that. Spray from the foot to the top edge of the bowl then rotate by hand. Over lap as you go. End up with much better results.

    I would suggest you put a not on it stating what the problem is and sticking it on a shelf for a while. It may resolve itself with time. Good for you attempting the experiment. You might want to try it again with some clear resin to make sure it wasn’t the tinting agents that caused the issue.

    • @chrisgiftshop3127
      @chrisgiftshop3127 3 місяці тому

      Thanks Doug! I already poured a new block, did not use the same colors. After talking to some people locally, I'm wondering if I didn't mix it right, since I was pouring multiple colors. I've sat this outside in the sun hoping the heat will "help" get the rest of the uncured resin out. If I do a bowl next I may do the clear with it. I think that might be a nice effect.

    I bought one as a back up chuck. I found that the holes do not line up with any of my chuck jaws from another standard chuck (not sure why they are different) Also the jaw that comes with it is smooth, no dovetail grip on inside and it also does not hold the lathe screw well in the middle. I tried to use the worm screw and it kept sliding back into the chuck when I was trying to push on the wood. Kind of mostly useless except for a recess tenon.

    • @chrisgiftshop3127
      @chrisgiftshop3127 6 місяців тому

      Sorry, you got a dud mine even in the. Review I said I didn't like the design of the worm screw. I didn't have any other issues other than the worm screw. Mine seemed to work fine. I was able to line it up with some record power jaws. As well as some Nova jaws. And neither one of the jaws that came with it. Have I had any real issues with as of right now? I also got mine as a backup however. Again, the design has changed since I bought mine. I noticed that the adapter screw. That was originally pictured when I bought. Mine is no longer pictured on the website. So you may have got an older model. However, if I had such issues that you were having, I probably would have exchanged it or just returned it instead of trying to make it work

  • @DougMilleratWoodSpunRound
    @DougMilleratWoodSpunRound 6 місяців тому

    Hey Chris. If you don’t want the world to see this post, feel free to delete it. I see in the video a few things that contributed and caused this catastrophe. 1. For half to fly up and out through the window, you were turning entirely too fast. 2. The tool you were using is a spindle gouge. This particular style spindle gouge has 2 issues when turning bowls. First, the tang, where the blade goes into the handle, is a simple flat piece instead of a round bar. It is a weekends that has caused breakage of tools, bowls, body when they break. Second, the outer edge of the wing sticks out abruptly making it easier to get a catch. 3. You were cutting “up hill” or against the grain. You are cutting into unsupported end grain which is easier to catch. When you watch the replay of that moment you can clearly see that indeed you had a catch with the edge of the spindle gouge as you were cutting toward the rim at high speed. I am not the final authority on much of anything. But I have learned a few things over the last 25+ years of turning and learning. I am happy to help any way you’d like my help. BTW, you had a very nice bowl going.

    • @chrisgiftshop3127
      @chrisgiftshop3127 6 місяців тому

      I appreciate any all constructive criticism. I figured I had a catch. I need a bigger bowl gouge I have a small 1/4 inch and I guess I'm kinda scared to use it because of how small it is. I have other rouges not as big or wide as this one and I just need to sharpen those a little better too. As for turning too fast when I turn something to slow I end up with small holes. I always call them tear outs. I told myself to stop when I flipped it and I thought I can push through and finish it. I guess had I stopped I would have a finished bowl or at least a better idea on how I should have moved forward. As always Doug thank you.

    Happy you were able to save this one. There are 2 things I would have coached you to do slightly differently. 1. You could have cleaned up and finished the bottom before you reversed it. It may not have come off the chuck if the recess had been sharpened up and a slight dovetail turn into it. 2. The resin in the bottom looks like it could be turned just a touch deeper. It’s a personal opinion, but I’d like to see a little bit more of the wood in the bottom. You did a pretty good job with this save. For sure one to be proud of. The touch of purple in the resin was a great choice. Well done.

      After going through the bottom twice I wasn't going to push my luck on taking more out the bottom. I too would like to have seen more of the wood on the bottom. As for the dovetail I alway forget to put those on my mortise. Over all was happy to finally finish this one. Have a bunch of others I need to finish now lol. Thanks for the tips and watching.

    There is a release agent to help get silicone molds out of their mold. Sorry I can’t remember who makes it. Maybe Alumilite? For your first molds these look great. Go thicker on your printed walls and I believe you’ll have the breaking issue solved. Well done.

      Thanks Doug. I've always heard everyone use Stoner as a release agent. I'll have to look into it more. I'm going to redesign the mold if I decide to make more of these. Thanks for watching and I guess you're #1 for the giveaway.
