Plow Truck Maintenance || Changing a Wheel Bearing on Ram 2500
What a long day this was. Started plowing at 7:45 am after an unexpected storm dropped 10" of snow in an evening. After plowing myself out, and a couple of my jobsites, I knew I had either a wheel bearing or a U-joint on the way out, but still had to go help a couple buddies out that were in a jam. One lives 5 minutes away, and the other lives 45 minutes away. Of course, I break down at the 45 minute away job lol.
After a $150 cab ride home, I get my other truck and flat deck and go get the busted truck, only to get everything stuck on an uphill after dark 50 feet from my shop. The wheel bearing was the easy part if you can believe that!!
Thanks for watching.

Uploaded a short clip with footage. This is the full video. My wife didn't know I was going out on the ice to plow for the neighbor and I didn't know she recorded anything but it turned out pretty decent I think. Didn't like being out there with all the water on top of the ice! FYI: there was plenty of ice to drive on. It was only the weight of accumulated snow that cracked the ice and pushes t...

Can I cut steel plate 1.25 mm thick with this tool?
@novelanederland3902 i doubt it. Its limited to 22 - 28 gauge metal

So I can put this at the end of my drill?
That looks like it works very well so I knocked down my metal shed but I want to cut it up so it’s easier to dispose of. Would this work well for that..I’m looking for something that works good but not too expensive

Can you plow an ice road with a straight blade?
@planetjupiter2551 you can yes but its harder on the truck amd the plow. Breaking trail or new road is more difficult but maintaining an expstimg road is easy with straight blade
I WANT ONE!!!!
A pipe dock build of some sort is something I am interested in. I read all the comments and see that Lake of the Woods was specifically noted. I have a cabin on Oak Island in the Northwest Angle of Lake of the Woods. I am on the south side of Oak with alot of miles of open water to my south. I'm concerned about a pipe dock lasting along my shoreline, but would still like to explore the possibility of building one. I have a pipe driller that will be doing the work but am looking for any advice or concerns that someone else that has done a project like this might have. Any help would be appreciated.
@mikeringnell7913 hi there mike. Oak island in N.W.A. is just on stateside, yes? We are up to the north in clearwater bay area (and kenora). If you're on the south side of oak island then you'll have that big traverse basin to deal with which is fine for water but can be treacherous on pipedocks for the ice/thaw season. When we sled to the Angle we always pass massive ice ridges in that basin by the Angle. If that ice flows into your pipe (which are 4" schedule 40), itll shear them like butter. It all depends on the prevailing winds during the thaw. If you get pile ups of ice on your shore then a pioe dock may not survive. Its a significant investment to chance when facing the open basin ice. Your driller should be drilling 3 feet into bedrock. If i recall, that basin is 20 feet roughly and a mud bottom. If you have shallow (less than 4 feet) at shore, then youll also be contending with mud jacking every season. If you'd like to discuss further or have more questions, check out boleandbranch.ca (thats us) and drop me an email. We can chat about it further to at least point you in the right direction.
The "Can't do that on Film" had me rolling
I'm not sure how that's better than a metal disc on a skillsaw ?
I think i would have held on to the dump bed and mounted it on a suitable trailer frame.
@bryanstaten5585 in hind sight yes, i should have held onto it. But it ended up going to a friend so its not gone forever lol. Its was convenient for household garbage amd small stuff.

Did you use mortises and tenons for your corner braces? If so, how did you get them in? I would love to see that part in video.
ua-cam.com/video/FqVP5052ZcM/v-deo.htmlsi=xCDY_BbJvZ_Pq_B7
This is a game changer. The vid I mean not quite the tool. I'd given up on buying it after watching another vid that could not go over the ridges but you demonstrate it's a matter of skill rather than a tool limitation.
Can you tell me the diameter of the pipes and wall thickness? How deep did you drill in the rock? Did you drill them yourself or hire that out ?
We use schedule 40, 4 inch pipe (1/4" wall thickness). We drill down to bedrock and then at least 3 feet into the bedrock then we underpin the pipe if need be but we wedge the pipe into the hole similar to the way a concrete anchor works. We hire it out to specialists. But we handle everything from thw steelwork up. Most of the guys who run these drills are guys from mines who go on their own.
@@lakelifecraftsmanis this your personal boathouse or did you build it for a client? Are all of your i beams same height, or did you have larger ones in spots and need to cut those pipes lower? Did you x brace your pipes at all? Like from top of pipe to a lower on pipe? Do you think that pipe mushrooms much and locks in or do you think that it’s so thick it doesn’t mushroom much on bottom? If the pipe was 4.5” outside Diameter what size drill bit did they use in the rock?
@ronengesether1 lots of solid questions 👍. This job is for one of our clients. For the pipe size, they use a 5 inch bit. I personally dont know if it actually "mushrooms" at the bottom like they say it does, but the drift head sure makes a mess of the tops of pipe when hammering them in place. I think it does to a certain degree as we've yet to have any issues as this is an acceptable, engineered practice. As for cross bracing , yes. Depending on the height of the pipe from base to I-beams, we will X brace below water if required. This particular project was within 8 feet of bedrock on a lake that doesn't fluctuate in water height that much. So, there are no issues with ice or height. But we box frame the steel and X brace laterally above water, too. All the I-beams are 6"W15 (6x6x1/4"), and we span a maximum of 10 feet per beam. All the pipes are laser leveled and cut to the same heights. Pipes are also placed in key areas for point loads if the structure is to be aupported as well as the boat lifts inside. There's a lot o design that goes into it for structural integrity.
That is how we humans are...

Fuel cap on the bed? Kind of creates problems for everything. Never have seen that before. 1st for everything.
Im 6'-4 and have huge hands lol. Cap on the deck was a must for me. Theres a little tiny glory hole on the side where the filler is supposed to go but i cant fit my hand in to unscrew cap. To be honest I think a lot of it has to do with the operator. My dads 93 f150 plowed with a 8'6" western for 15 years until the frame bent pushing a tractor with a bad starter into the garage amd this was a previously bent frame that was straightened out after an accident with the shop saying that with the frame already weakened would never handle a plow. In the same period of time my uncle with a 3/4 ton 91 chevy went through 1 transmission 1 engine 1 transfer case and 2 rear ends with a 8'6" boss. I currently have a 8'6" snoway v plow on a 2013 f150 with just shy of 140,000 miles and the only maintenance I've had to do is ball joints brakes starter and a water pump once, but it is due for brakes again.
Fair point. It's not that a half ton "can't" do it, its just hard on a half ton when you hang close to 1000 lbs past the front axle. With 1000 lb plow, 1000lb ballast and a driver, youre approaching the vehivles GVW pretty quick. Any pro pushing snow commercially will be in a 3/4 ton or higher IMO. The 3/4 tons are built for it. Higher cost of maintaining these larger trucks, too, though. My 3/4 ton goes through front wheel bearings faster than it should but that is also a dodge thing. Weaker front ends than the fords. GM s a whole other realm of getting the right front axle weight. I could find ant used GMs that would even handle a small plow.
@@lakelifecraftsman a lot of it is sizing the equipment right my v plow is designed for a 1/2 ton and wieghts almost 750 between plow and mount. The 3/4 and 1 ton version of the same plow is around 1200 pounds but to be fair my half ton isn't to common as I have close to the same towing and hauling specs as my dads 06 dodge 2500
@michaelbradley770 i used to plow with a 1996 dodge ram 1500 short box reg cab. Had a boss 7.6 straight on it. THAT thing would push quite a bit. I was impressed. A cheap 3/4 ton might do better because you can load it up more and parts are a bit heavier duty. A diesel may do better than a gas. It all depends what works for each individual. One fella responded that all he had was half tons in his fleet and they do great. Sure ok. For small driveways that may work. Doesnt work for me though.
@@lakelifecraftsman trust me a 3/4 or 1 ton will be the next vehicle I own but I am also planning on it have a 12 to 14 foot sno power or arctic so I will need all the extra wieght I can get

How did you figure out the wiring?
Which wiring specifically are you referring to? Theres truck side tail lights (easy to trace and figure out with test light). The deck side lights wiring (i found ground and went through each wire with power and labeled so i could match with truck side lights). The trailer controller plug i had to find a schematic online which turned out to be wrong from manufacturer so i went through the deck wiring with ground and power and made sure it all worked in the plugs of my 3 trailers. My trailers were all factory wired the same....the flat deck i had to change a couple wires for it to all work correctly

Great video. In the process of building one for my mini one ton. Thank you.
Thanks! Good luck with yours 👍
29 ga you can cut it wtih anything but what about 26 ga??
i bet it was real touchy extended that far out getting ready to build one for my jcb 8080 to lift 62 ft trusses 22 ft up thanks for the video
Hey thanks for the comment. Yessir, it was. A fraction of movement at controls is exponential at the load. As long as it was smooth it wasn't bad. A couple of close calls though lol. Nobody got hurt 👍 Good luck with your build
I should also mention that the leverage that is transferred to the machine is substantial with a load on it. 62 ft trusses shouldn't be an issue for weight, but you'll need full extension, i believe. 8080 is 9 ton machine? Don't know the reach, but you'll have quite a bit more power than my little 'bota, so i think you should be fine.
yea i'm going to use a spreader bar and my boom that i built was 22 ft with a 22 ft spreader and it took my 873 bobcat everything it had but those trusses were 62 ft 7/12 pitch and these are 4/12 at 560lb a piece@@lakelifecraftsman
@pattyotool9548 nice. Sounds like a fun project.
Thank you for the video, I'm in NW Ontario as well - my first winter here, I have a 2011 Ram 3500 & shopping for a plow at this time. I was going to attempt to keep my 600' driveway open with my quad however my neighbour says no way (especially since I work a 2 week in/ 2week out schedule. Thanks again.
No worries at all. Quad can do it but with 2 in and 2 out, they quad won't keep up with the 2 week out snow. Too much work for it but its not impossible. I used to keep a 2 km road open with a quad. But i had to be on it all the time.
I was using a reciprocating nibbler on my drill to trim roofing. Just a shaft with step change in diameter, not a blade as in this video. Slow compared to this video. I see a lot of the drill attached cutters using rotary blades - now I’m thinking desalt must have tried the rotary blade and said nah
tIME FOR REVOLUTION IN egypt AND saudi....THEY HAVE BETRAYED mUSLIMS
Yea. It’s still a pain in the neck , but a lot of steel roofing manufacturers void the warranty if you use a grinding wheel. Jeez
It does?!? I didn't know this. I love the cutoff wheel on a grinder as well. Quick work.
@@lakelifecraftsman it’s my best friend
@@lakelifecraftsmanbecause it heats up the cut area and melts the paint. It rusts there faster. Im reading when its cut with a shear it somehow seals the cut better.

Great video. I would suggest putting an LED in your third brake light to make it more noticeable.
Thank you! Good idea. Ill consider that as we move along here. I have something in form of new videos coming soon on a build possibly. Should be fun. Looking for donor vehicle right now - (this truck getting chopped up )
that big it had better be heavy or it would be junk. I just recently seen this tool and it's a must have on my soon to get list. I just planed down rough cut a ton of 8 x 8 beams. I get them up to 40 ft long this would be a time saver and do a better job. I have the 13 in dewalt planer and knew the beam would kill it so i had to plane with a 4-1/4" hand planer. I liked it but now after seeing this tool I definitely need this one
Yes. Any timber work and this thing shines!!
Go 1 ton f350
Dude....i might have to swallow my pride and go for a Ford, lol. I'm shopping around right now. The old 2001 ram is falling apart around the motor. Looking at 6.7 powerstrokes. Will see what happens! Over 500k on the odometer on this 2001 ram....she owes me nothing 👍
Hmm 6.7 good motor. I love my 02 7.3 though f350. 400000mils on him goin strong
If i could find a 7.3 without rust, i would definately be ok with that. Been told 2015 and above for 6.7 powerstroke are great. 6.7 under 2015 are ok. 6.0 - no way jose, 6.4 - i dont think so. Lol
I thought he was gonna go straight through the worm 😂
I hate manually cutting those sheets with tin snips, definitely an improvement
Thank you.
You're welcome!
What size pipe do you use for the legs? Do the legs get grouted or cemented or are they free standing in the bedrock?
Hi! Good question. These particular docks are installed with 4 inch schedule 40 pipe (1/4" wall thickness) and they are pilot drilled 3 feet into the bedrock, pipe installed into the 3 foot pocket, then it is smashed/hammered into place with the idea that the base of the pipe hopefully mushrooms in the hole creating an anchor. After that, its left freestanding (no mortar or concrete fill) but capped with W15 x 6 inch "I" Beam. 10 foot span max between each pipe. (Edited - correcting the auto-correct lol)
Its funny how filming makes us rethink shit... Im the same way 😂😂😂
Yessir lol
