Pressure Plate and Throw Out Bearings - Air Cooled VW Tech Tips
Here's a quick tech tip on Air Cooled VW pressure plates and throw out bearings (or clutch release bearings). There are two styles in the Air Cooled VW world.
Early style (1970 & earlier) clutch & throw out bearing has a collar on the pressure plate fingers, removable clips, and does not have any guide sleeve.
Late style (1971 & later) clutch & throw out bearing has a guide sleeve, clips are molded into the throw out bearing, and no collar on the pressure plate fingers.

Very informative video 🎉 I have a question about electronic ignition, I have a 1985 water cooled VW Westvalia 1.9 engine. After purchasing a Flame Thrower distributor, coil, spark plug wires, spark plugs, I've been notified by Pertronix that there is no way these can be installed in my vehicle. Which leaves me confused. 😢 My question is why would air cooled versus water cooled make a difference??? Thanks in advance, PS. If anyone sees this post, can a video be posted explaining this, I cannot find one!

From our tech expert Brian K - the 1.9 vanagons are fuel injected and use the factory distributor sensor as part of the crank trigger, so you're not able to just replace the factory distributor.

Hello. I have a case which may need a line bore, as I can see a vw emblem in the middle saddle like you mentioned. Also, I have a slightly loose pin in the thrust bearing saddle. Can that be fixed somehow? All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧🛠

    • @DuneBuggyWarehouse

If you can feel the emblem with your fingernail it probably needs align bored. Usually a slightly loose pin is corrected with an align bore, new bearings, and new dowel pins. Oversized pins are available but are rarely needed.

If it's a thick aftermarket side cover - there would be noticeable contact on the side cover if so. The side cover shouldn't have anything to do with 1st gear though. Check your shifter alignment (Rob and Dave's shifter adjustment is the best tutorial) and make sure you have enough external shift rod adjustment.
