Battle of the fixer-uppers: can you convert this garage and loft?
Welcome to The Price is Nice. The concept is simple; instead of getting someone to guess the price of things, we get an expert voice to tell us if the property is priced nicely. Nice is obviously subjective, but Ben's our expert and he knows a ton about houses so we got him in front of a camera to spill it all. It's also not a game show unless we attribute points to things but really, everything's quite arbitrary (we would've deducted a million points for the creepy doll) but our expert Ben loves taking the points system seriously. We hope you enjoyed watching this and took away some great insights when it comes to property hunting.
You can find one of Ben's favourite projects here ua-cam.com/video/ecbCnehNtCM/v-deo.html and more of the homes we've worked on on our website resi.co.uk/portfolio

Are we bringing back this ancient English tax?
Переглядів 3,2 тис.2 місяці тому
Fake windows are making a surprising comeback in modern British architecture, echoing a centuries-old tax dodge. But why are developers intentionally building homes with blank windows in 2024? We'll take you back to the Georgian period, when King William III's Window Tax inadvertently reshaped England's architectural landscape. You'll discover how this tax led to the (first) wave of bricked-up ...

Hi can you obtain a regularisation certificate if you have built your annexe a metre higher than your planning permission

Hey! This would require a retrospective planning application to the council but if the council don't approve the increased height then enforcement proceedings would start.

These videos invariably show expensive houses with ample space for plant rooms and spare external space for outdoor units. More feedback on how the majority of properties, that are far smaller, can adopt heat pumps (that must suit the occupants lifestyles) would be far more beneficial

Wall mounting of the heat pumps and use of thermal stores instead of hot water tanks can minimise the space needed.

Interesting & I heartedly agree. my work is in residential buildings, especially the new buddies and I couldn't agree more. They are soulless, boring and so samey! I sometime walk past a client building as I can't tell them apart. And they usually have the same problems, caused by lazy design, shoddy construction, and poor management.

Those modern mid to highrise building are important in providing housing at scale. Landcost is a massiv issue. (It is lucrative to at some point building cost almost don't change for building 18 or 24 floors) You can clearly see the difference from those recent towers to those build innthe 1960 and 1970s like build in thamesmead or Ronan Point in Newham. Back the were prefab concrete slaps that were often build really badly. Towers had often been build not allined to a grid but rather placed in some lose greenspace.

Woah this is so odd. I'm from Derby. I moved to London 4 years ago and I keep saying "I'll never move back to Derby!!" Met my partner and she keeps saying "We need to move out of London to raise our family. How about Derby or Nottingham where you're from? You always brag about how green and spacious it is compared to London" Me: NO! Maybe my mind will change in a few years. There's something about London with its never ending rich history and constantly changing facade that makes it so hard to leave. Anyone who has been to Derby knows how same-y same-y it can be.

4:13 The same elements? Where is the ornament? Ornament is central to the beauty of a building. Don't believe people who say the opposite. All great cities we visit, Prague, Rome, Venice, Vienna, Barcelona, have a lot of ornament. Absence of ornament feels depressing, no matter how interesting you make the volumes.

I went to a boarding school for a bit that had a house dating back to the 1300s which had a bunch of windows bricked up because of this. The shame of it is that buildings could have unbricked their windows but never did. I wonder if it was fear of structural damage, complexities of modifying any listed building (even when restoring it closer to its original appearance) or what.

  • @jamessmithson-br7rm

EPC is the reason some new builds have such tiny windows. Developers don’t want to cough up for better quality windows which keep the heath in better, and walls are cheaper and easier to insulate - so easier to put smaller windows so it get’s a higher EPC score.

Id read modern buildings are bricked up because its more energy efficient to just not have windows, so if they can put the energy rating up they will, and blank brick walls look weird

The new builds are shoddy rubbish but form part of the WEF/UN plan to herd people into spaces where they can be monitored 24/7. Wellbeing of inhabitants is not considered and the prices of these lousy spaces are nothing but robbery. The practice of placing a kitchen into the living/dining room (where the dining table is often tiny only squashing 4 people ) is a marketing concept trick. Don't place cupboards and appliances onto a wall and dare to call it a kitchen. As for an en suite in a 2 bedroom apartment please see how foolish it is but marketed as luxury living. The other trap never discussed, service charges. Bad behaviour and bad mangement causes damage which must be repaired and costs passed onto residents. Where facilities are included such as a pool watch out. Drunken parties, friends of friends, pissing or defacating in the water, yes it happens and guess who pays.

I am very surprised with housing in London, it is really really bad, I wouldn't mind paying the high price I pay if my studio would have been a bit more modern, better ventilation system, better windows, and I wouldn't need to hear my neighboors showering or talking. Surprisingly enough, constructions in some poorest countries are better than the ones here.
