Ilkeston Charter Fair - 20th October 1989
This might bring back a few memories of Ilkeston Charter Fair.
The video was shot using the state-of-the-art video camcorder at the time - just shows how things have improved over the years.
The traditional Ilkeston Charter fair takes place every October and is one of the oldest and largest street fairs in Europe. It has been going for well over 700 Years, the Charter was granted by King Henry III in 1252.

Captain James Cook and The Endeavour
Переглядів 714 місяці тому
A short video which was inspired by the magnificent replica of The Endeavour, which sailed into Whitby Harbour in 2018. I have never seen Whitby so crowded, as throngs of spectators lined the quayside to welcome the ship. As well as taking photographs of the ship I was inspired to compose and record a tune as a tribute to the beauty of craft and to remember the day. More of my music here: sound...
Ilkeston Heritage and Classic Vehicle Show - 2015
Переглядів 694 місяці тому
A walk around the Ilkeston Heritage and Classic Vehicle Show which is organised by Erewash Partnership. This popular event is an annual occurrence on Ilkeston Market Place in August. It's a free event and always draws a large crowd who pack into the area for a great day out. Apart from the vehicles on show, it's always good to pop into a local pub for a refreshment break.

I quickly explain some of the history of the canal and show some sections of the canal between Sandiacre and Ilkeston. This is the first of these type of video for me, if you enjoyed it, please 'Like' and Subscribe'. Cheers Alan

Almo's Videos' : Outtakes - Nottingham Canal bike ride
Переглядів 4525 місяців тому
When I did the Nottingham Canal bike ride, there was a lot of footage that I didn't include when I edited the video for UA-cam. Watch this video and you will be able to work out just how I managed to get completely lost. All paths look the same but have the habit of ending up someehere different. I eventually ended up at the Giltbrook Industrial Estate in Nottinghamshire. if you like the video,...

Ilkeston From The Air : Rutland Sports Park

Rutland Sports Park, Ilkeston from the air. This is a shorter version which picks out the main features of the drone flight. The DJI Mini 2 SE is a brilliant drone with stunning video images. You will find more 360 degree flights in the playlist, please check them out. As usual, if you have enjoyed the video please 'Subscribe' to make sure you don't miss the new uploads.
Ilkeston From The Air : Pewit golf course is scheduled for development.
Переглядів 535 місяців тому
Ilkeston used to have a very well kept, nine hole golf course. Erewash council say it was running at a huge loss due to a lack of golfers using the facility. The council has applied for funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund but the Conservative wanted to scrap the fund. What will the new Labour Government do, as they have already made cuts for expensive projects? Where does the uncertainty...
Ilkeston From The Air: Monks Way/Nottingham Canal junction.

The Bloke on a Bike also has a DJI Mini 2 SE drone, and isn't frightened to use it :) Whilst I visited the Nottingham Canal in my last video, I had the drone with me. This might give you a quick idea of where I started from, before I later got lost... The Nottingham Canal is disused and has been filled in at various points. I hope you enjoy this small taster of what future videos might be like.
Nottingham Canal - Ilkeston to Awsworth, Bennerley Viaduct and a wind turbine.
Переглядів 1925 місяців тому
This trip is along the Nottingham Canal from Ilkeston to Awsworth. It's now disused but still has water in many stretches. I stumble across Bennerley Viaduct and grumpy security men at the Wind Turbine. Nottingham Canal was built to connect Nottingham to coalfields in Ripley, Eastwood and Ilkeston. There is a link below if you would like more information. In the late 1950's I used to walk part ...
Erewash Canal - Sandiacre to Larklands, Ilkeston
Переглядів 985 місяців тому
This video is a return trip to Ilkeston from Sandiacre. There is quite a bit to see. There are swans, a sunken boat, narrowboats and the thrilling M1 bridge. Phew, strap yourselves in for an exciting bike trip along the towpath. I'm on my Bodywel A26 electric bike again and wearing a Feiyu Pocket gimbal camera on a chest harness. I'm still discovering the best way to shoot this sort of video. A...

The first in what could be a series of A Bloke On A Bike. This trip covers the Erewash Canal from Green's Lock, Hallam Fields, Ilkeston to Sandiacre, Derbyshire. I go past the Gallows Inn and pass by where a new industrial estate is being built where Stanton Ironworks used to be. The trip is on an electric bike and uses a chest mounted gimbal camera - a Feiyu Pocket. The first time I have tried...

Thankyou. I now live in Milton Keynes and I think Ilkeston may now have mare Traffic Roundabout than MK. I have not lived in Ilkeston since 1978 and have only visited or driven through a few times since. The last time I got lost. I will get a map and drive through this video again.
what was the chocolate manufacturer called at the very bottom of bath street? a guy i knew called rob brookes worked there when we left ilson colledge,
Sorry I have no idea.
great.do you have any footage of white lion square? then the travelers rest.happy days in white lion when barry and angie kept it in early seventies great juke box and bikes only on back car park.
Those were great days, rock discos in the function room.
Liked Ilkeston Prison Buildings!!
@@sofalugger The design should have been better 😁
Beautiful film, Spent many 5-10minutes in Gunns buying my `Dinky and Corgi cars...Still have some today!! Shame how its changed ...Not for the better...Great Halcyon days
what a prosperous place it would have been.tree lined streets👍 then all our business"s where send abroad or taken over by foreigners.stanton and stavely .decimated by st.gobain or whatever they are called.pits shut.then other industries dip in cotmanhay.and other local factories like charnos etc.
Not forgetting Rutland Garments on Market Street.
It's funny how dog owners get into hot water if they don't pick up after their dogs have done their business but Horse riders don't bother and there's a heck of a difference what they leave on the roads.
I got our grandkids to count how much they could spot in the video. :)
Tornado hasnt been there for around 3 years
The photos would have been taken in 2017 when the Roundhouse was re-opened.
@@almosvideostuff9766 thanks , confused me for a bit when the video has only been posted a few days
A jolly journey. Enjoyed this.
It was fun ( in a strange way ) ha ha. I did see places where I had never been.
I have lost count of the number of times I have encountered gates on "cycle paths." Lifting my partners and my EMTB over these is a real pain and dangerous. Solution, I avoid these so-called "cycle paths" now and stick to the country lanes. I suspect they don't really want cyclists on these paths. I contacted Sustrans and gave locations of obstacles but the land owners build these gates without consideration of cyclists or more likely deliberately do it to discourage cyclists. I'm lucky, I can lift my our EMTBs but a lot of older folk (I'm 68) cannot lift a 24kg 52Lbs electric bike and would have to turn around and go back. The least they could do is have signs warning you that this cycle path has gates not suitable for bikes. I meticulously plan my routes using Ordnace Survey Maps and I use a GPSmap 64s. This makes life so easy, saves having to make detours and makes the ride so much more enjoyable.
One big problem in the past was youths riding dirt bikes along the towpath, I think the gates were put in to stop motor cycles and horse riders.
Thank you. It is more than half a lifetime since I lived in Ilkeston, 45 yrs, and there were many places I do not remember or have changed beyond but you had my old Drink Den in there and quite a few nostalgisic glimpses. One I noticed and it always facinated be as a child was the Bank on Bath Street, Right Hand side going down with a wedge of a little wall outside. Think it was National Bank to begin then became Nat West. No idea why but I always liked to walk along that few feet of wall outside the entrance. Thank you again.
Thanks for the nice comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the video.... I used to know a gentleman by the name of Eric Goacher - any relation ?
Brilliant video thank you so much for the memories. I wish you hadn’t turned right at Church Street but instead drove on past the Mallard!!
I'll remember to go past the Mallard next time - it's been done up recently too.
Amazing video and a brilliant channel. Do you have anything of Heanor Road near the Mallard and Cotmanhay near Church Drive? I’m Ilson almost all my life; love it or hate it; it’s home. Thank you so much for the great memories - Love and Peace ❤
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Maybe next time I'll have a drive past the Mallard - I notice thay have done it up rrecently.
I've walked this route - it's quicker by bike!
Yep - I used to live in Sandiacre...my first job was at Lace Web Spring.
I like this - I have been on all this!
The industry in the area must have been huge and awesome when it was in full production.
I think its the road built around Newthorpe sewage works going to the coal washing plant. Built around 1980
Thanks for the information, I really didn't have a clue why the road was there. I don't remember the area before everything was knocked down, I'm from the Stanton side of town. :)
I went the many times
Thank for your comment. I'm in Ilkeston, but used to live in Sandiacre too.
Oh please get rid of the music, a total turn off.
Thanks for the comment the alternative version is here ua-cam.com/video/y5gVNX3qCCY/v-deo.html
I go on this
I hadn't been there for some years and was surprised how good the facilities are.
Great but please name them ! Would like a picture of Gunns Toy shop on bath street.never seen a picture
I have added captions for the video - Gunns Toy shop is at around 8 mins. Thanks for watching
Who stops the cars and pedestrians clrossing and who opens it?I can't see no warning lights.
There is an operator in a control hut who changes the traffic lights and opens / closes the bridge.
And not one takeaway in sight back then lol
Only Takeaways back in the day were the fish and chip shops :)
I lived there in the 70s still got family there
I traced my family back for a few generations from Kirk Hallam / Larklands / Cotmanhay and more. :)
2:35 Aldi here now where those cars are parked.
You are correct
WOW, What a blast from the past with this one Mr. I was brough up in ilkeston in cotmanhay to be precise, and i used to go to bennerly sckool back in the 80,s what a trip down memorie lane. I remember many fights at sckool going along cotmanhay road Wow. A lot of good and bad memories there....Now i live in the canarias islas in Tenerife since 1995. Its a lot more warmer then Ilkeston.....🌴 Thanks for posting this Mr.....👊😎....saludos....
I was at Gladstone School from 1961 to 66, shame I have no photos of the place.
wish you'd name em though, sometimes i cannot even recognise them or know where they where or are.
Funny, I knew everyone immediately 👍
I have added captions which might help. Click on the captions button. Alan
Great. Recognise most now, Glad Premier got a mention.
In these pics. most of Ilkeston is as tidy as anywhere else, but a small number of owners allow theirs to fall into rack and ruin and thereby let their neighbours and the entire town down. I can't help but recall my visits to my then wife's family living in an eastern block country, and me asking how it was that all cars, buildings and gardens were so well maintained / clean and tidy? I was informed that degradation was promptly reported and the culprits were criminally charged and fined. Surely at least our local authorities ought to have the power to triple the culprits' council tax?
A lot of the shops in town are tied to landlords who won't spend anything on maintenance. A lot of the shops in the video had trade affects when the Inner Relief Road was built .
Thank you. My Dad's friend always talks about Ilkeston, his hometown. But he has been never been there for about 24 years. Now, he's 93. When I'm visiting him again this year, he asked to seek a video about it. And he liked to have a trip, he wanted to see Granby Street, his house was demolished actually. And here we were. Your video tour is really excellent.
Thanks for the lovely message, I'm pleased it jogged some memories for your Dad's friend. He might like to have a look at some of the towns shops and other building which are no longer there. ua-cam.com/video/AEeldj_OCNI/v-deo.html
Hi, Go right to the end, about 07:30. I'm the second one in from the left, 2nd United Reformed Church, the one looking at my hand/wrist and looking around nervously. The lad to my right I think is Neil Magill. 1988 is too early because that would make me too young. I think 89 earliest, maybe 90 or even 91.
I don't think they do parades like that these days - shame
Must have been 88 or 89, because I am not with the 2nd and John Dolby is the GSL. Good to see Matt Rogers again, still miss him.

Mark Dolby is in there somewhere too.
