Homemade Pumpkins and Pyjamas // Gemma's Devon Diary
Hello and welcome back!
This week is definitely all about autumn, as I plunge head-first into @debbieshore new book: Half Yard Autumn collection, from Searchpress.
I tried my hand at her fabric pumpkins, and have an update on the pyjamas by @SewOverIt - they're almost complete!
In toddler-friendly crafts this week, Robin and I tried decoupage for the first time and it was so much fun, although is there ever anything more satisfying than peeling dried PVA glue from your skin?
Hope you enjoy and thanks as always for spending time with me.

Gnoming About

Welcome to EP 3 of my Devon Diary, In the past week or so I've been pottering about doing homey things. There's a completed gnome from @imaginedlandscapes as part of the launch of her fab book, which I share. I prove it is possible to burn soup but somehow manage a passable sweet potato and chilli number. Hemming my makeshift curtains is a triumph - go me! And granny squares abound!

Hello and welcome to this week's video. This time I share the start of my kitchen garden, my banana bread in the battle against waste, how to make play dough and more! I've made a start on the next stage of our kitchen garden this week, by planting Spring Cabbages and creating a herb planter where, hopefully, I'll make those £1.50 living herbs from the supermarket really work for me!

The PJs look fab. I think hiding them until Robin's birthday is a great idea, they will be all shiny and new again 😊 Slight cheat idea but have you thought about buying patchwork patterned fabric and then using that to make more hot water bottle covers 😅. Your 100% hand made one looks fab, I think it might been the initial building the fabric step that feels like more labour than result, purchasing the patchwork look might make the process faster and more satisfying. Small children are the best mood boost I have ever found. They are so in the moment that you can't think of anything else either. They are all complete energy sponges 😂. I will say it does get easier but it's never not tiring. Everyday is a physical, intellectual and emotional roller-coaster for them and you are along for that ride! I'm so glad you are enjoying them so much 😊 I hope this week is a healthier week for all of you. Xx 😊

Hello! Ah thank you, I think he'll be excited when he opens them on the day. Funnily enough, although you might (and I might) have expected the EPP to feel like the labour, that#s the bit I enjoyed the most and I'm already working on a new EPP project. Creating the patchwork fabric is so satisfying. I think the fatigue and tension came from being faced with so many new techniques I'd never tried, and being scared I'd ruin the project, if that makes sense. Yes the small people I get to spend my days with are so rewarding. I feel totally utterly spent by 3.30 and have no idea how anyone manages to do it full time 8-6 5 days a week! I led my first baking activity with them on Wednesday and it wasn't a disaster so I'm counting that as a triumph haha! VERY different baking with 6-8 toddlers than 1. xx

Sorry you have been having a rubbish body week. I hope you are up and running again soon. I'm am now a self described expert on bed/sofa crafting at all levels. I recommend either colouring in or a puzzle book for recumbent days, knitting or crotch of sitting up but still in bed. Painting and sewing for me are both upright on a sofa crafts as it not advisable to drop either in your bed!😅 Is all else fails but you miss crafting I have found vicarious crafting through UA-cam is company without high tension or concentration. My hope is that all of this is redundant by the time you read it. Your carrots look fab 😊 Lovely to watch as always. Thank you 😊

Morning 😊. It looked like you had a great time washing all your knits, especially Robbin! For your special Robin yarn my go to would be a cowl, they normally allow you to use as much of the skein as possible and are so handy when you are outside with children. I've done weekly menu prep for years as I have a very restricted medical diet. Part of my condition means I can't eat leftovers or meat/fish that wasn't frozen at source. Like you I have definitely forgotten to get things out of the freezer at the right time so I have a couple of tricks I now use. 1) when I plan for the week I always write down what I need to get out of the freezer on the day I need to get it out. Or set a calendar reminder on my phone. 2) When I inevitably don't manage to get something out, I fill a bowl with tap water and pop the sealed bag or container in. Water defrosts most things fairly quickly. 3) I like to have at least one cook from frozen meal in the freezer for when the day has gone completely wonky! I hope some of these are helpful in your meal prepping. I haven't ever really had any getting ready for autumn traditions. Apart from changing which shoes I have easy access to and popping my heated chair liner into my powerchair. I do need to do some yarn and jumper baking to make sure no moths have snuck in over the summer! I hope your first week of work has gone really well and you can have a fun weekend at home with your family 😊.

Hello! Yes Robin just loves to be helpful. He's at that glorious age where there is beauty and wonder in everything, even those things that us tired adults would pass over or consider mundane, and it's bringing joy back to us! Thanks so much for the tips - I've already implemented the calendar reminders for taking things out of the freezer (I'm an analogue girl at heart). This is my first year starting what I hope will become some traditions for preparing for the change in season. For once I'd like to get through it without feeling like I'm chasing squirrels or my own tail! The first week has been great thanks although I'm shattered. Hope you're having a good weekend! xx

Hi Gemma, for the Robin yarn, I think a Musselburgh would be great for it. Batch cooking is amazing, a white board or piece of paper with the menu plan on it, on the fridge to remind yourself to get the out of the freezer, works great for me. Hugs from Adelaide 💙

Ooh yes a hat could be lovely. I might go for the Inside Out hat as I saw one being made and it makes sense to me. I've written on the calendar what I need to get out and when, although saying that I got so distracted by prepping for a family Sunday roast this morning that I totally forgot to get the stuff out haha! Never mind - leftover pie tomorrow and steak pie Tuesday when that defrosts. It will be ok! Hugs x

Loving seeing all the socks. Our bedroom has just one built in cupboard (internal to the building) has a rail and 2 shelves above. We bought a hemnes drawer unit, the double one for small clothes, but I also fought tooth and nail (with the help of our friend) to get an ottoman king-size bed for extra storage. Haven't fully unpacked yet but I think it's really going to help with clothes and bedding storage. I've loved seeing the granny square card deck and it's definitely on my list to get as I think it's such a cool idea. Granny squares are definitely a go to project for each crochet. But then I do also love making toys so if I find one I can make quickly, I tend to make a few lol.

I'm here for any of your craft/ life adventures. For the name what has replaced midnight dying in your life? Obviously work and Robin which are both great, but what do you squeeze into post bedtime evenings? I would go with that, the things you can't wait for 5 mins of fitting it in. It's lovely to hear the connection of the Midnight Dyery to Lara. I understand why you would like to step away, but also why it is also an emotional process. If it not to intrusive I would like to suggest add things from the Midnight Dyery to Lara's memory box. They seem so linked that it would be a way to preserve that connection. As with any comment please feel free to ignore all of any of what I have written. Thank you for another great video 😊

Yes the weather in the south east has been sweltering 😅. The mini flax looks so good. I did the inverse and didn't check my counts before splitting for the neck line in a tee and discovered I somehow managed to decrease by 10 to many stitches somewhere but i had just cut the yarn and was aboutto rejoin 🫣. Time to rip back. Oh and this is my second attempt as I made this tee last year but got the needle size wrong and it probably would have fitted Robbin 😂. I'm so excited for your pre school adventures. I have a degree in early years and was a nanny before becoming disabled. Small children are the best. Hello!! Thanks so much I really like how the yarn is working up. I will definitely need some more though as I forgot to weigh the yarn. Oops! Third time's the charm - my baby garments always used to be way too big so the opposite problem. I hope it works out this time for you - do let me know! I'm SO excited for EYFS. I've been spending more time in the room with the children on days Robin isn't there (I can't be in there when he is for obvious reasons) and it's just so joyous. It's such a privilege to be trusted with helping to raise others' children too because essentially that is what we're doing isn't it? I loved teaching teenagers during the first part of my career, apparently that's good training for thrreenagers!

Aw thank you so much for the shout out x The beaches yarns are some of the softest Acrylic I've ever felt and they glide over the hook/needles too, my 'On the Seashore' blanket by Rosina Plane is being made up in Beaches too. As I complete lots of the amigurumi projects I had planned to do whilst packing, I also kept behind my WYS Gingerbread socks and put a couple of rounds in the first sock at my parents yesterday (it's easier to knit than crochet there due to lighting and the dog). If I finish all the projects before the summer then I'll be working away on Christmas socks lol. Loving the colourful basket, very inspiring.

OK so we all know that I am by no means a monogamous crafter, I guess teaching Textiles helps with that as I can create at work too. But I currently have only 2 active WIPS and both are TOFT kits which are almost complete, at least prior to last night anyway when I started another of my Snowflake berets as a sample for Gem TLGG. I only kept back a few projects when I moved the rest of my stash so once these few little bits are done I have a blanket that could be completed over a couple of weeks and the Samurai cross stitch that really needs finishing for my aunt. Not sure that will be done before I make my final move but I guess with only 8 weeks to go now, we shall see...

I did love working with the Rowan though for that granny blanket for TYD. Lovely to see some cross stitch again. I still need to finish the samurai and now that I've finished making lots of turtles I think that's what I'm going to move onto as I want it done before I make my final move in August. Which gives me about 8 weeks now... I've been wanting to do the 100day project again to get it finished but keep putting it off for other quick finishes.
