I've grown, raised and harvested over 90% of the food we eat right here off of our own land, we have so many different wild foods we harvest but Mushrooms are the one thing I've never had the balls to mess with! We have species here that are very difficult to tell apart and if you get the wrong one you are dead within minutes... No thanks, I'll trust the pros to come harvest our mushrooms!

What a fantastic day! Just a little information about biotoxins... Over the past decade, the Oregon Coast has seen more frequent blooms of many forms of algae / phytoplankton. We had a phenomenon that was referred to as the 'Blob' - this is a huge portion of the Pacific Ocean from Northern CA up to Alaska where the water temperature was at the highest level since such records began. This resulted in more frequent surges of Domoic Acid and Paralytic Shellfish Disease affecting Dungeness crab, bay clams, razor clams and mussels. The algal blooms were bigger and more frequent. A sign of the changing climate. In the summer, Mussels are susceptible to Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) because of a dinoflagellates bloom (a specific phytoplankton) that results in high levels of biotoxin. Memorial Day was when over 25 people became ill from PSP after consuming Mussels on the Oregon Coast. ODA (Oregon Department of Agriculture, the state agency that performs all of the testing on clams and crab) worked with ODFW to shut down Mussel harvesting along the entire Oregon Coast. As of today (6/30/24) Mussel harvest is still closed. They closed the other fisheries as well; bay clam, razor clam, oysters, etc. There was even a closure of the commercial harvest. Lots of folks seem to roll their eyes and think it's a conspiracy of some sort. I hear things like 'hoax' or 'liberal conspiracy' all the time yet, people do get sick. There have not been any reported deaths in recent times though but I can assure you, as someone who almost lost his life from Vibrio (a biotoxin in raw Oysters), I wouldn't wish the horrors of being sickened by biotoxins on anyone. I take the testing and subsequent closures very seriously and hope that other folks do. too. The trick with these biotoxins is that the toxin cannot be cleaned by washing or cooking. When I interact with people looking for information about crabbing and clamming whether in person, on the coast, or on social media my mantra is... Always call the Shellfish Biotoxin Hotline. In Oregon it is: 1-800-448-2474 Washington has a hotline, as does California. In general, the razor clams tend to have high levels of Domoic Acid during summer months. The recent El Niño weather event we had dropped the ocean temperatures to more normal levels but... We had a very unusual rapid switch to La Niña weather event that has just occurred and likely caused water temperatures to fluctuate. The pro tip: Razor clams are like candy to Dungeness Crab. They work very well in a snare cage along with some Shad. Since you must keep the first 15 you dig, no matter what size or condition, I always set aside cracked shell and smalls for my vacuum sealer and storage in the crab bait chest freezer. Oh and... Once you get really hooked on Razor Clamming, I suggest you shell out the $$ for a Claminator. It will change the way you feel about Razor Clamming!

The actual people who got sick were from muscles, not clams. They shut everything down, including the bays until they could test everything. Razor clamming opens and closes from DA levels throughout the year, but the only poisoning that people got sick was from the muscles which are still closed. This is the first time they’ve ever closed the bays to clamming that I know of at least a decade. The levels in the razor clams did got a little elevated, but nothing like they were in the muscles. Muscles are attached to rocks, and are more exposed to the algae than razor clams buried in sand, it will be OK eating the razor clams as long as they are open in the zone, you are clamming during harvest. Razors are only open for a few more weeks and then they close until the fall. Enjoy!

Hey brother happy birthday… me and my family were there on Saturday we didn’t limit out either. But we got 22 with 3 people digging. We’re California transplants from 4 years ago and clamming has been one of the things we’ve enjoyed doing as a family. Quick cleaning tip. Try dropping your clams one at time in a pot of boiling water wait 2-5 seconds and pull them out and drop them in cold or even ice water the boiling water releases the membrane and the cold water keeps them from cooking. Also maybe do it outside if you can. The first time I cleaned clam I did in the house and apparently made the whole house smell of clams so my wife banished me to the backyard. Happy hunting and keep up the good work.
