muy hermosas tus plantas de canna lily
As a Southern Californian, I was super curious how you were able to keep your palms alive in the winter; this was really cool to see. Thanks for taking the time to explain (I’m eventually going to move back east again and am hoping to take my “desert” plants with me. Watching your vids has been a great source of info and relief!), you’ve got yourself a new subscriber 🌴
Wow these are stunning.
Good Job on the palms. Nice to see them growing in Indianapolis.
Very nice. My mom's been looking for new palm plants to buy.
Looks good
Love how wild it looks ! I might have to get me a new Musa basjo it's still not came up.
Looking good man! That's impressive with the livistona. Your bananas are tall already!
Looking incredible.
Mine has been in the ground during our cold snaps needle palm and trachycarpus fortunei and my European fan palm all doing great so far ! Glad to see results of them doing okay buddy!
Nice! I love when sabal minor get those big mature fronds. A great addition to any landscape.
Where are you located?
I am in Indianapolis
Following this wonderful progress.
Fantastic video. They are some great looking palms.
looks good. Givning me hope when I put my Chinese Windmill Palm in the ground Saturday. I am also in Indy.I have had it in a pot all winter and put outdoors when it was above freezing outside but did bring it in during our few cold snaps.
Wow, I'd say great results! Thanks for the update
All looking great..
how long did it take for them to bloom?
Looks like everything faired pretty well. Sago palms amaze me, with just minimal protection, how much they can endure. Just discovered your channel (and subscribed) via TNTropics. I'm looking forward to seeing your other videos as well as updates.
Looks great
Man heck yeah. Im so happy there doing well or okay. This winter has bedn brutal though. I had people tell me this year in Indiana the winter is supposed to be kinda bad. But i denied it lets face it none of us palm guys wanna hear about a bad winter. Lol.
Hi there. I assume by the title you are in Indianapolis. I also am in Indianapolis, and I have a Trachycarapus Fortuni that I have in a pot that I have put out this winter but took in during the cold spell I have it back out now I will plant it in the ground in the spring so it will have a full growing season to get established before next winter. Look forward to more videos on your palms
Yeah I’m here in Indy as well! I’ve had my Trachycarpus Fortuneis in the ground for three winters now. Spring is the best time to plant them, good luck!
Looking good the minor fronds will die back a bit. The washy/Trachy is where it was touching the tarp as you said. If you could wrap the inside palm in frost cloth and put 2 poles up with 2 pvc 90 degree elbows connected on top and use spring clamps to clamp tarp to poles is my idea I use on palms.
Hopefully they get stronger and stronger and make adaptations.
I can hear the jets overhead in your video.
Yeah, the airport isn't too far away and the air traffic seemed busier today. It's pretty constant all day unfortunately.
Unfortunately we know what that causes@@indypalms
are you on PalmTalk?
I have an account there, but I haven't been on there in awhile
Stoked to see your palms made it through that frigid weather we had a few weeks back. For the trees sake I hope we don't get any more of that nasty weather
Hopefully this cold snap ends soon. I’m over it already lol.
Yeah, it's lasted too long lol Tomorrow here we should finally get above freezing for the first time in well over a week.
@@indypalms Damn that’s rough man.
My bananas have made it well below -12F and were non covered. popped up great in the summer. hopefully it goes well again
These geoengineered winter weather events are getting us again. I wonder how many people have died, how many plants and animals have died?
Curious to see how things turn out next week! We didn't have much snow down here but we are few degrees warmer!
Where are you at?
@@northeasthardytropicals541 I am near Spottsville Kentucky.
@@bluegrasspalms Nice.
snow insulation method was nice
Hang in there spring is not far off. Even here in Pensacola Beach Fl we are getting a part of this cold snap it’s 34 now going to be 22 tonight
Nice palm
Wait... Last year (I assume the late Dec 22 doozy) it got to -9F... and all you did for the Sabal minor was toss a tarp over it? Wow. That's amazing hope for every Sabal minor.
Yeah, that's all I did for it last year and there was only minor damage on some fronds. Right now I have it buried in snow to insulate it and I made a little burlap "fence" to slow the wind. It got to -4F yesterday, and it's 0F now.
@@indypalms Wow. That gives me hope. I'm like 10 miles from NYC and in June I planted 5 palms. 2 Sabal minors, 2 needles, and a Saw palmetto. It's my first foray into zone-pushing. It's 17F right now here at 7am. This is our lowest of the year so far. And in the next 10 days, it's supposed to drop to 16F twice more for our lows. You went to -4F. Wow!! But I just bought heat cables and a thermocube. But, I haven't set them up yet. They're still in boxes. Part of me is thinking... if these so-called cold-hardy palms I got can't handle upper teens... then F them! I got the heat cables just in case it drops to, say, below 10F. But I should probably just install them. Do you use any heat cables? Sorry if you show you do on videos. I watch them. But I watch so many palm videos. I forget who does what.
I don't use heat cables, only regular non-led christmas lights. I used to use c-9 christmas lights but they melted parts of a tarp. I have found for my Midwest climate that Sabal minor is the best here, however there's some needle palms close by in Cincinnati that have been there a long time unprotected. Both can be pretty hardy. We ended up getting to -6F the day after that -4F, and tomorrow night it's forecasted for -3F. Ready for spring.
@@indypalms Goodluck til spring... Ill definitely check out your future updates.. And I'm rooting for every palm out there...
In Western Kentucky they are calling for 6 days below freezing. The coldest down here there are calling for is 1F but who know. Such a long period below freezing only occurs about 3 to 4 times every 30 to 40 years in this region. Hoping for the best!
We've had a similar winter so far here in southern Ontario. Looks like this Saturday night winters finally arriving. Good luck with everything and keep us posted!
Good luck, where I live is supposed to be well below freezing for the next 5 or 6 days.
Here in Ohio we're not scheduled to get minus temps, but maybe down to single digit or low teens. I'm still very concerned about the outcome because I have bulbs up several inches, I am concerned for the canes of roses and berries. Since everything has been fairly mild and wet soil, I am concerned the sap is up in these. I think it was last year we had a similar situation that killed roses to the ground, killed lavender, rosemary, and things like that. Not happy about this forced winter weather. It isn't natural.
Let's hope this freeze is brief! Everything looks good! The Sabal Minor should do ok. Maybe a little mulch over the crown for good measure, but they're pretty tough.
Thanks! I hope it's brief, but it's not looking like it at the moment. But I'm prepared for it, just have to wait and see how it turns out.
If it's going snow and be bitterly cold (below 10 let's say)... I'd imagine a palm buried in snow is better than any plastic tarp. Snow is a great insulator from that arctic air. Once covered, it's not getting colder than ice... It protects it from dry bone-cracking cold air. So... unless you add active heat to enclosures.,.. I'd imagine it's worse than just letting snow protect your palm. I don't know shit, and I'm in my first year trying cold hardy palms (NJ USDA Zone 7B). So I should probably shut my trap. But... it seems plastic tarps do nothing.
The tarps help protect them from the wind and hold in the heat from the lights. They also help in the daytime to make a little greenhouse effect. It can get decently warm inside them, even on a cloudy cold day. While snow can be a good insulator, lately when we get below 0F there hasn't been much snow at all on the ground.
@@indypalms Gotchya. OK Cool.
Por. Favor quiero conseguir de las cannas que tienes tú, Qué debo hacer...
Trachys are looking strong! Like you said, the Filifera will grow fast, so it'll look great once the heat returns. Great update!
Enjoying the Updates, varieties of palms. Hoping we avoid another polar vortex for 2024.
Your palms look nice man !
looks good!
Thank you for the update. It looks like you're well prepared for winter.
Nice garden!
There is a possibility I would think that the yellowing could be from air pollution or something to do with the stronger ultraviolet light from the sun rays. Might not be from the short cold snap at all.
That tall Trachy looks great
