Nightverb: Drone and freeze demo (no talk)
Here's the Erica Synths Nightverb paired with a DB-01 and Gamechanger Audio Light pedal; then with a DB-01 and Zen delay. In both cases I'm testing drone and freeze settings. The knob position of the Nightverb reflect the actual values. I'm still getting used to the freeze and in hindsight would probably have been better used with some more pad-like chord, but live 'n learn guvna. Routing-wise the Nightverb is always at the end of the chain. When using the freeze function its useful to have a second effect in series so the contrast between the frozen reverb and the dry sound isn't too jarring.
Headphones will help hear some of the beautiful grit and superlow bass.
So after a couple of weeks use what's my opinion of the Nightverb? Well, have you ever used one of the 90s digital synths that has just a single knob or slider to change parameter values? They're a colossal pain to program and feel like they're trying to force you into just jumping between presets. Then compare that to a knob-per-function synth. That's where I am with the Nightverb: Reverb that you play, an instrument that can be tweaked to suit the moment, backed up then cranked. After all, one of the main advantages of hardware over software is that you can do "real time automation" as you play, and it's fun. In fact in all this time I still haven't saved a single Nightverb sound :)
As usual there is no processing in the DAW other than once or twice where I manually adjusted the volume. But there's no effects, compression or limiting etc. Sometimes there's a little high-frequency which is from the Zen. There is no sound source connected to the Acidbox, it's generating it's own sound from high resonance and the LFO. Let me know if there's anything else you want to see and hear.

An Erica trio: LXR-02, Nightverb & Zen delay

Two related patterns on the LXR-02 with manual playing over the top. The set-up is simple: A single stereo pair out with the left going to the Zen delay (then out in stereo); and the right going to the Nightverb (also out in stereo). Some of the voices are panned hard left for Zen-only effect; others right-only for the Nightverb; and some have a little of both. Only using a single stereo pair m...
Nightverb: First day noodlings (no talk)

Beware the title: "First day noodlings". This isn't a collection of pristine patches or sweetly controlled tone-perfect spaces. It is literally me with the Nightverb on day one twiddling the knobs trying to understand the various interactions and calibrations. But I figure that will be of interest to some. And since my daughter always laughs at how "incredibly niche" my channel is, well, surely...

Something's wrong if you're making music but not having fun. It should all be fun. But writing good, coherent, interesting and *long* patterns is difficult (for me) and often liable not to be much fun. The usual path is to make a good 16-step pattern, copy it, add some variations, and bump to 32 steps. Then what about little fills and other bits? Now you're talking about "song mode" and other m...

The "slot machine" method of random writing with the DB-01
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Місяць тому
Slot machines (AKA pokies and speilautomat) supposedly get a lot of their appeal through the fast cycle of anticipation and reward. And if you don't get the reward you wanted then you can instantly run the cycle again. Wins are reinforced by pretty lights and little tunes. Well, that sounds a lot like small-chunk randomization with the DB-01: Quick randomizations of a few steps and with instant...

How many parts can a mono synth play in one pass? Here I think the DB-01 does a good job simulating three or four tracks and yet this is all just one live take, plus vocal samples on top for color. Music-wise there are no edits, no automation, no DAW EQ or any other effects. Everything is exactly as you see it. The DB-01 runs into the Darkglass B3K, then to the Zen delay, and is then output in ...

Arp87 delay on synth: Simple yet interesting, flavorsome yet mild
Переглядів 3472 місяці тому
No matter how many high-end delays you have there's always a place for a small and simple mono. The Walrus Audio Arp87 has a lot going for it: obvious operation, five delay modes, good sound, small footprint and tap tempo. Against that the modulation is a bit seasick and it's not cheap. It's also rather Roland-esque in that it won't let you do anything too weird. It won't go anywhere near 100% ...

A rather simple wish would be to hear the different presets (maybe using a simple pattern on the DB-01 and no other fx) to get a more general idea of what this puppy can do. Maybe with tweaks along the way, when a preset strikes your fancy, to hear how the knobs specifically affect the sounds? For context I just got a Deckard's Dream and am intensely researching reverbs... seriously pondering the Meris X vs the Nightverb as both are at the exact same price point.

They're different sound engines, right? Maybe with some overlap? Perkons has wave folding iirc and even a sample based track, and LXR-02 has neither? They both have fm sounds. I love the way Petkons sounds, but I have no need of it's sequencer or size. I really wish E.S. would release a rackmount Petkons sound engine at a lower price point that I could just sequence externallly. Guess I'll just be getting some sample packs of it.

Yes, both digital synths at heart although I think there's very little overlap sound-wise. A no-sequencer Perkons is an interesting idea, it'd be like a much more viscous Vermona DRM1 Mk IV.

      @RichardDeHove 7 днів тому

Agreed! The damping makes a huge difference but this was literally day one so I was twiddling as many parameters as I could vaguely understand :) Edit: The freeze function is interesting but requires careful handling to make it shine especially since the incoming signal is then dry. I find you need another effect in series so you can play against the freeze. Of course that's highly dependent on the original sound. Another video coming soon.

Drum machines aren't the main mission for Arp that's for sure. But for specific things I think it can do a great job especially with the recent firmware upgrades. Mainly thinking about long generative-style pieces with ratchets and timing modulations, just a few percentage point shifts can make a big difference. Still, fun to see what Arp can do to different machines.

For the MIDI channel, instead of hitting the Menu button, select one of the four Arp channels then hit the "Midi out" button. Nothing in the demo is synced up so it's wide open on how to link everything. I'd probably have a master clock coming in (ERM Midiclock) and send a DB-01 and LXR-02 a copy each of that. Otherwise the LXR could be the master and give a MIDI out feed to a DB-01. The Zen I have unsynced and just tapped in a time for a little healthy slop. @@SpikesStudio3 how else am I going to judge it? I'm not going to buy one just to return it.

Tails are very harsh and diffused in noise.

@@HatredPrime Agreed! Which turns out to be exactly what the "high damp" control is for - which I never used. That's day one for you XD

EXCELLENT DEMO. My fave so far. With a simple twist of a pot/knob the room changes size, surface material, etc. without any menu diving (and because it can memorize settings, no need to take knob setting photos when you hit the right combination). Erica was smart to send you one gratis, you lucky dog... they just made a sale from me thanks to this vid! Looking forward to future demos once you grok its full potential.

Thanks :) I do love that the controls have so much range rather than trying to fence you into approved safe territory. Am thinking maybe some heavy drum stuff next....
