A Trip to Avian Mars: The Weird and Wonderful Birds of Australia by Bruce Lyon
UC Santa Cruz professor Bruce Lyon shares a selection of photographs from a month-long visit to a field station/nature park near Melbourne in 2016. He covers some of the features that make Australia’s bird life different from most other places and presents natural history vignettes to give a sense of the diversity of birds and their behaviors and breeding systems that one might see in a typical temperate Australian woodland.

Love this!! Just wrote a poem about double crested cormorants : The double-crested cormorant has tropical ocean eyes, that are so bright, and so clear, that you can touch the sandy bottom, that have seen things you wouldn’t believe, like high-jumping bass tossing their emerald-striped backs over the rising sun, and a catfish, that swims straight as an arrow, towards undeniable bait, and chomps down, gouging her lip, on a fate, that is surely fatal, as if she was a saint, testing the limit of her faith, by checking with her two cloudy eyes, if there is something perfectly still, and endlessly spacious, above the incessant, rush hour traffic. I too wish there was a way to visit the other shore, and become so self-assured in the end of all ends, that I would be forever, full of levity, and
soar through this world
like a superhero named wonder, whose only superpower is bearing the heavyweight of all change, like a double-crested cormorant, drying their soggy wings, on a sandy island, on ladybird lake, in the mid-winter sun.

Contacted Alvaro by phone 3 times via his phone number listed on his website. Alvaro returned zero of those phone inquiries. I have a long standing personal rule of not doing business with anyone who is incapable of returning a phone call, however Alvaro was so highly recommended I persisted by sending an email. Alvaro did respond to the email, but was unwilling to chat by phone as it was more convenient for him to have me type out my questions for him to answer via email. As a a result of this back and forth I ended up booking a trip for my wife and myself. My wife and I both scheduled time off of work and booked an air B & B for our one vacation of 2022. Alvaro then notifies us 5 days prior to the trip departure that he doesn't have a boat available for his pelagic tour. He did offer 30% off of a future tour, but I don't know who would sign up for that hassle again. I then responded to Alvaros email about the possibility of taking another tour earlier in the 4 days while we have the lodging available to us. However, Alvaro was no were to be found. Despite stating he understands the difficulty this creates for his first time guests he apparently sent the email and then wasn't prepared to respond to his guests needs. I then tried to call him again after 3 hours as my wife and I were trying to figure out what to do and as one would expect Alvaro's voice mail box is full and can't take anymore messages. Fortunately for us this happened on a one day trip and the cost to us is 1,000$ in lodging. We had been planning on seeing how this trip went and were considering one of his international trips this winter and a trip to Hawaii in the spring. Considering Alvaro handled this so poorly we are happy we ran into this now rather than later. We will be looking into going on a pelagic with another reputable company in the near future, but I would recommend avoiding Alvaro's Adventures unless your looking for a hassle and loss of travel expenses. When this happens Alvaro won't be responding to your email inquiries or phone calls.
