Climate & Militarism Teach-In -- Session 4: Change
As a debut of a new kind of video we're doing, we're launching a teach-in series on issues of climate & militarism. When we think about how issues pertinent to Poiesis manifest, it's important to understand the underlying social issues that feed into the whole picture. This is our first attempt at that!
This is the fourth and final session out of four, concerned with how to make change given everything that we laid out in previous sessions. We had Nick guide us through some topics, and he facilitated three other discussions that centered the surface issues, structural issues underlying the connections, and ideological roots shared between the two.

Good point but depends what you replace it with. I would for example say playing videogames is more productive than doom scrolling social media. Getting to the root cause of this coping mechanism is more important than quitting the behaviour itself.

Excellent! I suggest that you all become familiar with the approach of Tetrads, developed by Marshall McLuhan and his son, Eric. This approach has been examined and advocated by current philosopher, Graham Harmen (sp?). What tetrads offer is an fourfold heuristic set of practices. It goes beyond the initial thinking of Heidegger.

Saying capitalists create surplus to reinvest into their production to make better products is the biggest lie I've heard in this video. They don't reinvest to create better products. They pocket the profits. This is why products are getting worse in quality even in higher end and expensive products. The entire premise of capitalism is "how much sawdust can we put in food to increase profits before people begin to notice"

Frankly, it's just capitalism. There is nothing new to slap "surveillance" as a qualifier. That serves for Zuboff's career and seminars inside the walls of academia. She described how this type of tech company makes more money, not anything novel or a relevant critique to capitalism.

@@flourfree2K I understand the sentiment, however, it it still incredibly easy to “sift through the noise” and see which topics you were actually interested in. A simple behavioral signal such as time spent on a web page before returning to the search results shows A) content relevance to your search, and B) interest in the searched topic. Your behavior on when searching a topic you’re actively looking for vs one you’re you’re search for to confuse their model is different - maybe not different enough for a human to recognize, but more than enough for a program purpose built to find patterns to recognize. The only true fire solution is to simply not use these products that surveil us, but becoming a Luddite makes it so you are not able to “participate” in society.

wow. This is a cool concept. Hmm... so if I understand correctly, you guys want to make everyone begin to understand the roots of our technologies (how they work, how they're made) again? That would require a stable, inclusive, and consistently updated public education infrastructure. The internet sounds like a good way to go, but how can this be integrated into our governmental structures to be a lasting institutional change? I wouldn't say that it's a coincidence that the masses are disconnected from... the means of production (to produce technology)...

I'll more or less copy a comment we had below! We talk about technology as a "bringing into existence." This is how Martin Heidegger used the word "poiesis," which means "revealing." All the necessary parts were sitting around before, but the idea of the invention hadn't been revealed. Think of the "eureka" moment as a moment of poiesis, revealing, bringing into existence. When we think of how we used to bring technologies into existence, it was much more obvious that there was a cooperative aspect of our revealing. Craftspeople would see where their resources come from (the earth, trees, seas, etc.), and we would have a relationship between us, the revealed technological idea (invention), and our environment. With modern technology, the "revealing" aspect of coming up with inventions is much more sinister. Modern technological poiesis is more concerned with seeing the world as a means to our ends - something to be harvested, rather than something to cooperate with. We want to reclaim the act of revealing and direct it at this strange relationship we have with technology: to reveal these underlying thoughts behind how our technology works, what it does to us, and what we sacrifice in the name of "progress." Hopefully that helps :)
