Let me add some light to Service Connected (SC) cause of death; and Non-Service Connected (NSC) cause of death. The determination as to whether a Veteran's cause of death is SC or NSC is made by the Veteran's Benefits Administration (VBA) Rating Veterans Service Representative (RVSR). If the Veteran was SC and receiving disability benefits for a condition at the time of death, and that SC condition either directly caused, or materially hastened the Veteran's death, then VA will most likely find the cause of death to be SC. If a Veteran is SC for conditions like hearing loss, tinnitus and similar conditions, and the Veteran died of a heart attack or stroke, then VA will find the cause of death to not be SC. There are circumstances where a Veteran may not be SC for any conditions, or the cause of death condition, at time of death; however the surviving spouse feels that his death was caused by his military service, then the survivor can still file a claim and VA will investigate that claim and make a determination. Here is a scenario where that might occur. A Veteran served boots-on-the- ground in Vietnam for 1 day or more; the Veteran never filed a claim for any Agent Orange related conditions; and the Veteran died of complications of heart disease. The surviving spouse can file a claim for SC Cause of Death. VA has a "duty to assist" any claimant in perfecting their claim. If the survivor does not have access to the Veteran's military records which would prove he/she served in Vietnam, VA is obligated to to assist the survivor to obtain those records through the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) which is part of the National Archives. If the survivor identifies any medical records, hospital records, etc., but does not have personal possession of those records, she can submit a form to VA authorizing the VBA to obtain those records from the medical entity on their behalf. As another tidbit of information, most funeral homes are familiar with VA death/burial benefits and will assist the survivor in filing for these benefits. My WWII Veteran father died in January of 2024. The funeral home told us they could not file for the headstone, the family had to do that. That is blatantly false information. The can, and usually do, file for the headstone or plaque. In my case they just didn't want to The Director of the VA National Cemetery Administration is a close personal friend of mine, we worked on key VA projects together before I retired from the VA. A phone call from his Executive Assistant to the funeral home in West Virginia, and the funeral home ordered the headstone, which turned out to be a plaque to attach to his existing headstone. A lot has changed since I was an RVSR at VBA, so the best thing you could do to better support your channel would be to go to the VA Regional Benefits Office (VARO) in the state where you reside; go to the Public Contact Unit (walk-in); Ask to speak to the Coach of that Unit; explain who you are, what you do, and you would like to ask some questions and get some information so that you provide the correct information on your website. You can also go to any DAV, American Legion, or other Veterans Service Organization (VSO) office and ask to speak to an accredited representative and ask the same questions. However, I personally recommend going to a VARO as you will get first-hand information from those who have been specifically trained in these matters. VSO representatives are trained, but this is not their primary occupation. I highly encourage you to visit the VARO closest to you. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. If you have difficulty in determining which VARO to visit, respond to this message with the state where you reside and I'll try to assist you with address to go to, and if possible whom to talk to when you go there. I can tell you that after going through the experiences with mom dying in 2022, my handicapped brother dying in 2023, and father in 2024 - I am not a firm believer in "end of life" planning. Not just for direct death expenses, but as to all aspects of the end of a person/Veteran's life. Thank you for what you do!! Bill
