Hey Ben, what you reckon, can I add a Zone 2 session after a strength training?
@@HansDorsch Yes you can mate. Just make sure you’re eating enough after the session. You may also find you need some calories at some point during the session as you’re going to be working for longer.
Great work, love how easy you explain information
@@austinneufeld-n8t thanks mate. I appreciate that.
On my first enduro my calves were quickly fatigued just pushing the bike up the sections too steep and loose to ride. I think they are an often overlooked part of the event. After that bad experience I Introduced plenty of prowler sled work and it worked an absolute treat. They are now my enduro prep secret weapon - the pushes seem to catch everyone out. The liaisons at Ard Rock had loads of people stretching out cramping calves. That really kills your run dead before it even starts. Sleds are so relevant to pedalling. Love them. For anyone interested my routine was once per week as strength session finisher: put 3/4 of body weight on the sled and push at brisk walking pace constantly back and forth for 5 minutes. Increase by 1 minute each week if you could complete previous week without rest. When you can do 10 minutes unbroken you will piss any push up and have calves with mad stamina.
@@elslanedog1264 I love this. Nice one mate.
Try 5dev's crank measurement guide. Ive tried 165 170 and 175 and was most comfortable on 170, i tried there guide and it confirmed this so it was accurate for me
@@max-eb9vi thanks. I’ll have a look
Same, most measurements show that I should use 175mm cranks, tried my friends bike with 165s for a couple of days and it felt like ass, so I've decided to stay on stock 175s. Pretty sure I heard my wallet making a sigh of relief from across the room too.

@ its a pretty weird sensation 😂
The true full benefit/best experience is from using both - I chop and change regularly, have done for years.
That's cool. Keep hold of those flat pedal skills!
I have never 'shinned' myself. I attribute that to: 1) Using the mid-foot pedaling position where the ball of the foot AND the heel are supported by the pedal. A long pedal like the Catalyst is made to do that; 2) Getting out of the saddle when the going gets rough, thereby keeping weight pressing both feet into the pedals; 3) When braking: both heels down . 4) When not braking: Front heel down, foot pressing forward and back toes slightly down, foot pressing rearward. This is super-easy to do, but takes conscious attention for a few rides. It will be subconscious habit thereafter.
@@jimwing.2178 👍🏻👍🏻
HI friend nice video I like your video how can we connect to talk about it friend ?
Been riding flats for years now, I went back to cleats for a few reasons: 1. My technique clipping in and controlling speed was problematic. This was fixed with practice. 2. My shoes were not ideal for clipping in quickly. Based on this I was able to conquer alot of my issues with clips. So for the next few months I'm riding clips exclusively until I'm 100% comfy and can change between flats and clips.
haha - the opposite of what I am saying, but for a great reason! Just make sure you don't lose those flat pedal skills. Ben
@@thestrengthfactory. Stamp 1's waiting on a box ;)
I had an incident during a race on an unfamiliar trail and I’m so glad I was riding flats! I was able to jump off to safety in a splint second. I’m not sure I would have been able to do that clipped in. We also need to stop calling these clipped pedals clip-less. I do however love being clipped in on the indoor trainer.
@@mrsmtw5210 the whole clipped in on clipless is mental! 😂😂🤦🏻♂️
Calling pedals 'clipless' makes sense when you understand the history and know what a pedal clip is. But 'clipped in" to clipless pedals is a stupid thing to say. A better term is 'clicked in'.
@ the whole thing is strange, but I kinda like it. 😬
Great video, pretty much 100% agree with you, only time I think it can help (not definately helps) is on extremely chattery, rooty descending in World Cup Downhill racing to stop your foot completely bouncing off the pedal. That said, with great technique you can overcome that issue, be interesting to check out the split for UCI World Cup DH pedal choice. More jumping videos please, especially for stepping up from mellow ish blue jump trails to steep faced kick reds, I'm struggling as there's something I'm slightly missing.
@@jd4000 cheers mate
Pins can cause a lot of damage, no doubt the fault of the rider. You can use pins with a lower height. I'm experimenting with nyloc nuts screwed on the pins, hence presenting a blunter surface, at the cost of grip obviously.
Mate, just get some cheap football shin pads or Endura Shinpad socks. Short pins or mods short enough to cause your feet to slip are more likely to cause you to get injured by the pins that by pins that actually grip and keep you locked in. I was on clip-less pedals (clipped in) for decades, now I'm on flats (OneUp Large aluminium ones, amazing grip with 5-10's, convex so foot wraps over pedal and grips), used to ride flats on BMX back in the day. I now feel more planted, closer to the bb axle or less 'on top of the pedals' and can pop a foot out in an instant when I need to, it's definitely improved my riding, jumping technique and fun. Let me know how it goes.
@@paulbrimstone1587 yeah they really can open up a wound but I still prefer a full length pin. That way I feel less likely to get an injury as I’m less likely to slip.
@@jd4000 👍🏻👍🏻
trying to get bike fit,:crank length, frame size, saddle height or bar width is like seeking medical advice on the internet.
@@michaellevine6884 you’re probably right! 😂
I totally agree with all of the benefits you’ve listed of spending time on flats, I’ve been doing “flats season” in the winter for several years and it’s really improved my riding (they’re on my bike now). In addition to the benefits you’ve stated, I think improving your “feel” of the ground through your feet is a big one. Because you need to pay attention to how you weight your feet, you end up learning to feel the ground, and by extension, the grip of your tires, more effectively. However, I would nuance the efficiency point a little bit. I don’t think there’s a major difference on a road climb, but on technical climbs or pedalling sections, clips do allow you to apply power in awkward positions/scenarios by momentarily pointing your toe or simply preventing your foot from being bounced out of position. While this may not show up in a controlled efficiency test, I’m confident it makes a considerable difference. This is absolutely not intended to dissuade people from riding flats, just to point out that there’s some challenges to riding and drawbacks in a racing scenario.
Cheers Evan, yes I can see times where a tech climb would benefit from clips for sure. Nice work doing flats season too. Ben
I can tell from a distance if someone is on clips. Looks abnormal
I switched 2 seasons ago to Pedaling Innovation flats I’ll never go back to clips . Great video
@@chrism2983 cheers mate
When will the roadies switch to flats?
@@sj-jb1nm when they stop wearing Lycra. 😬
When somebody shows them how much more power they can get by pushing through their heels instead of through their toes. This works for MTB, too. When on long uphill slogs, move your feet forward on your flat pedals so that your heels are fully supported by the pedals. Then consciously push through your heels. You will transfer more effort into you glutes, which are stronger and more suited for pedaling than are the quads.
I’ve been on flats for over 7 years now. When I started riding mtb I was on clips. Back in those days most riding was done on bridle ways (gosh how old am I?), there was very little in the way of fast technical riding. My riding now days has changed massively, it’s all about the descents. There was some lab testing suggesting that there was little difference in pedal efficiency. Check out some of the gcn videos and others. ua-cam.com/video/CNedIJBZpgM/v-deo.htmlsi=u-_j5jy2YpQT2N0U

Preach brother , im certain roadies are riding sneakers on a clipless pedals (dumbest name possible) for comparison .. flat pedals for life 🙏🏼
Honestly I think the main ebike benefit is unspoken - it's that the ebike lets people get away with being heavy.
@@zed5129 it does look like that for part of the e bike riding population for sure. If it enables them to keep riding and exercise then it’s all good. The key is that it’s a short term fix. If they are getting bigger and less healthy then it will only work for so long.
You're wrong. If you're 6'-4", 175mm is just fine.

@@Fabien-kz2dl why would it be different for either wheel size? BB height varies on different bikes regardless of wheel size. Also…. There’s no absolute rules on what length is best. It’s individual. Your statement is arbitrary.

Hey Bro, I am a 15 year old rider who is desperate to get faster at dh but also build a muscular physique. Will a standard 3 day muscle and strength building program benefit my riding and help make me faster or do i have to do specific "MTB Workouts" to get faster because I see riders like Amaury pierron who are jacked yet they are still super fast so they must do some bodybuilding right?
Hey mate, as a 15 year old just starting out the great thing is that you are primed for making gains in training, no matter what type you do. The most important thing is to train consistently and with some intensity - once you have good technique. A good approach you could try is to focus more on bodybuilding on the upper body and more on strength and being athletic for the lower body. The main thing to watch out for if you go down the bodybuilding route with body part splits is that if you go really hard, you'll be sore for days and you won't be able to ride well. Also, Pierron is in great shape, but compared to gym bros he is not jacked or that big. He is just very lean, so he looks more jacked. There is more definition. He has a great, athletic body that is strong and muscular.
@@thestrengthfactory. thx very much bro, makes sense. Would you be able to suggest a program maybe? if i dont like it i could always weave it into my current bodybuildling workout. Im not tryna go the full bodybuildling gymbro look i just want to get some muscle on me to the point where i look good without a shirt on.
@@AJ_Brimson Yeah for sure, check out The Complete DH Program. You will want to add in a couple of extra upper body sets and maybe a 3rd gym session if you're not riding so much, but this will give you what you need. Great common sense advice as usual. I live in an environment where riding on frozen and potentially icy trails is the only option in winter, as the trails can be badly damaged by riding when muddy. We also have long sustained climbs and decents on most outings. This means colder temps with different traction challenges. For me, warm footwear, a second set of gloves, a puffy, and the forethought to shed layers on a long climb and bundle up on the decent are pretty mission critical. I also run studded tires, which are expensive and heavy, but are complete game changers when riding on ice or hard pack snow.
Your environment sounds a bit more extreme than mine but you sound well prepared. Good commitment mate!
Best thing I did was drop a day of work! Having a day to ride and/or do house things when the kid’s at school takes the pressure off the rest of week so I can spend more quality time with the family - which includes smaller bike rides with the kid!
