  • in this video we explore the history of broxburn and uphall. through the first settlement,to the first castle to the industrial years of shale, right up to the present day. we also explore the history of Houston house, Middletonhall and Niddry castle

    Thank you so much for this video. You taught me lots of things I had no knowledge of and I saw the tip I crawled up when I was a kid. I was told as a child the Brox part of the name was for the Badger and ofcourse burn for stream. I live overseas now and was brought up in the Holygate, that was a bit of a shock when I saw that.

    Broch is badger in old English and in Gaelic. Badgers stream whatever way you slice it.

      Again it's been a bit of time since I covered this topic but I believe it's mostly thier own flora and fauna. But I want to say they have their own newts (but don't hold me to that one lol). If you type oil shale bings and species into Google you should find the research (I personally found it a bit technical and jargony)

    How Uphall got its name is not clear to me.

      There was a house with an apple orchard if I remember rightly it's named after that. I suppose hall was a name for a big house, and the orchard was up near the hall,then just uphall

    The Brox flows into the Almond at Kirkliston and it overflows in some seasons.

    Scottish Gaelic for Badger is spelled Broc. Just sayin'
