$450 Painted Dresser Makeover | That Shabby Guy Explains Refinishing Techniques

- I decided go back to a furniture makeover that I did about a year ago and explain some furniture painting techniques and other refinishing techniques that I use frequently.
I purchased this vintage provincial dresser for $60, painted it light blue with gold trim and a wood stain top, did glazing over paint and ended up selling it for $450 almost immediately! $360 profit and $60/hr!

At 3:22 you called the oil based stain “stripper”.
I'm kinda dumb sometimes. Whoops. :) lol
Just watched it. Top comment award. I must have watched this 30 times during editing and missed that lol. Thanks!
We all make mistakes. We’re human
@@ThatShabbyGuy I guess there are all kinds of patrols ot there ready to catch a slip..🙄
@@ThatShabbyGuy I love your work! Thanks so much for sharing 💓
I appreciate how you don’t cut corners and do t try to put on a “show”. Thanks for teaching your craft so well. Your a true artisan.
You truly are an artist. I love watching you paint!
Love how this piece turned out. Enjoy watching your videos. Keep em coming.
Stunning! Well done, great explaining on your process, thank you.
Stripping the paint off is satisfying 🤩
I found one of these dressers at goodwill and had one as a kid. Thanks for showing this
Great job and thank you for explaining all your steps and processing so well. 👍
This is literally my childhood dresser. It was incredibly nostalgic watching it completely transformed. 💜
I love it please do more videos like this. I like hearing what other people do and why and also what kind of margins they are working with
That was quite a nice little profit! I love how it looked when you were all done. I really enjoy your videos. You give such good tips and your review if the products you use is so helpful to someone who's just getting started refinishing. Great job! 😊👍
I'm glad you liked it! Just keep practicing. Everything with refinishing can be redone if you mess up. Yes, that takes more time but you learn how to do it right and not make those costly mistakes later. Good luck!
Thank You for this .....I want to re-do my bedroom set and very much needed pointers on the tools and products I need to use...I LOVE your work.....
Thanks for watching! I'm working on explaining more in my videos. Hope it helps!
This is one of my favorite dressers from the 70’s! I’ve always loved it! Great job as always!
Love how this turned out.
It turned out beautiful!
Aw, cheers lad. This is brilliant stuff. I'm going back to watch it again. Thank you so much for this. Great to see the techniques explained so well. More of this please. Learning lots.
Will do! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful piece. I really like the gold accent and the hardware turned out really pretty!
Love your videos 'Shabby Guy' - your work is similar to my own history of using oil base 'glaze' to antique finishes, I'm new to 'color coats' but it seems to be catching on and it's so much easier than staining piece by piece to get a uniformed finish - I can't wait to do my first 'makeover' on some thrift store furniture, thanks again for the inspiration.
That's beautiful, Thank you.
My husband I repainted an old French provincial piece like this one time about 20 years ago. We still have it and plan on repainting soon. Old furniture just seems to built better. I prefer it over new, gotten lazy in my old age in not wanting to do the work myself anymore lol.
I loved the outcome of this dresser! Very helpful video as well. Ty
Thanks for watching!
I hope it’s easy as it looks. You inspired me to search for old tossed out furniture to practice and have fun. Only thing is i don’t have any of those spray gun and sand roters stuff
You are an artist in your field! As always, a great result.
When I found you and watched your videos I was hooked. I always like to paint furniture years ago but haven't done any in a very long time, but watching you made me start again, I have done a dresser , chest and night tables. I would love to have a place where I could do more things.. Thank you for given me more tip's on how to do things I didn't do back when.
Maybe it'll help you on future projects! There are plenty of ways to paint indoors. Just get some drop cloths. Several. Brush your paint on and wipe on your water based poly for a top coat. You can use wax too. There's lots of products that are indoor friendly. I use the ones I use because I have ventilation, a big work area, and a respirator to get things done faster.
Great finished product.!
Your work is impeccable! Watching you scrape the top of the dresser was relaxing lol.
Lol thanks! I enjoy watching the scraping process too. I've got to make an ASMR video on it someday!
i saw you do the glazing in other videos. I used your technique while redoing my bathroom vanity this weekend. THANK YOU its so pretty!
Awesome! Glad I could help!
Nice! I love watching your different techniques!
Glad it helps in some way!
Thanks for reposting. I just recently subscribed to your page. I have the same dresser and wasn’t really sure how to get started on it. I’m still learning the different techniques on staining or painting furniture. This really helped.
Awesome! Thanks for subscribing. Glad I could help!
DUDE you have a great sense of STYLE.
Thank you ! I Always look forward to your videos 🙏🏼
Hi Lorraine! Thanks for watching again!
I have saved this video. The next time I find a similar style dresser to upcycle, I am going to try your techniques.Gorgeous out come! Thanks for sharing your talents.
I have just started to my own refurbishment projects on old furniture we have, so far it's all going well, and I find your videos a great source of information for beginners like me.
Such quality explaining each step and what your using.
And thanks for the primer for info.
I have been wanting to “flip” furniture for quite some time - I love looking for furniture at the thrift stores and wonder what I can create - Thank You So Much for including the breakdown of money
That will definitely push me to try
Just start with something small. My first piece was a $10 nightstand. Sold it for $50. Bought 4 more small pieces. Sold those and eventually moved to larger pieces for a higher profit margin. Start practicing with whites, grays, and blacks. Always in high demand so you can almost always turn a profit and keep going. Good luck! Thanks for watching!
Flipping furniture is fun! I just started in May, after thinking about it for several years. Once you start and sell your first piece, it's exciting.
Thank you Shabby for your advice - means the world to me
Amy, what was your first piece? What was the profit?
@@Linda.Rides.A.Vacuum my first piece was a 2 drawer nightstand. Got it free. Painted it white and the hardware black. Sold it for $30 within an hour. Whites and grays seem to sell the best.
I spray painted a tv stand for my daughter’s dorm - waited several hours in between coats of spray paint - it has a “tacky” feel - I wouldn’t be able sell a product like that - that experience gave me doubt - does chalk paint dry non tacky?
Love the glazing on this furniture. The color is perfect. Thank you.
Excellent! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
Another great video by @ThatShabbyGuy. Thanks for sharing the details along the way, keep it up!
Thanks! Keep up the work in those 1v1's too! You'll be Gold I by Christmas!
WOW!! I can’t stop watching your Chanel. Amazing work WOW!!
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Excellent tutorial . Thank you for explaining in detail what you are doing and why. Much easier for people to follow you instructions. You worked hard on this project, so you earned every penny! Look forward to the next video. Take care, Peace.
Boy, prep is everything!---Go through lots of rags, do ya?!---I popped in to my Goodwill store today (senior day!), and passed over some furniture pieces while thinking of what YOU could do with this, that, & the other! Wish I had your talent and energy! (Mine is Hospice nursing...)
Yeah. I use a lot of rags. I could save money by going to Goodwill outlets where they sell clothes by the pound and cut them up into rags but that takes time to go there, find shirts that dont have print/textures that will mess with wiping, especially glazing, then I'd have to take the time to cut them up. I buy a big sack of rags for $14 at Lowes. Lasts me about a month or so.
I had the exact dresser and after many years I painted it silver and it had a large mirror with it as a set. I sold it in a heartbeat for a lot of money at least 6 times more than what I paid for. I got a dejavu 👏👏👏👏👏
Good description on what you are accomplishing in each step. Your voice is pleasant to listen to.
Thank you for your teaching steps.
Thank you! I was hoping that I could start trying to explain things better as long as y'all wanna listen. :)
This dresser looks exactly like the dresser I had growing up in the late 60's and 70's! I love how this dresser turned out for you. Thank you for this video!
Cool to see when people recognize furniture they had as a child or maybe a relative had. Quality vintage furniture is my favorite. Thanks for watching!
I'm so glad you were able to restore this dresser and give it another chance! You just can't beat the real wood furniture of the past! ❤️
My Daughter just bought one exactly like this--you did it beautifully!!! Thanks for the great video and ideas! This will be helpful to her when she does hers.
Just beautiful!
I’ve got two end tables that I’d like to do a farmhouse look on. Hopefully your videos will help. Thanks so much
Came out beautiful 👏👏
Thank you very much!
Love the razor blade tip 😊👍🏽
Great idea for French Provincial furniture.
I have this exact set in 2 twins, 2 dresser’s ,night stand ,mirror , paid 400. For 16 years ago. Broyhill. It’s not in too bad condition but could use a remake.
Enjoyed your remake of your dresser very much, pretty color.
I have the same dresser only in pecan color with 3 slabs of cream gold veined marble inlaid on the top . Beautiful
Excellent 👍 job, çolor choice I loved thanks for the video
Love, love your videos!! Easy to follow. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful!
Very satisfying scraper.
I really enjoyed this video! Thank you for explaining step by step. 😊👍🏼
Absolutely stunning
Great tips man, thanks for the walk-through!
Thanks!
WOW! Beautiful
Love this piece
love your videos, you thoroughly cover everything. I wish you could do a side by side of before and after the project. Thanks so much!
Great suggestion!
Just beautiful and so well explained! Thank you!
Someday, after you do more of your videos with instructions like you planned you could plan to do a live session and perhaps answer questions or post an email address for questions so people can ask them.
I've actually been thinking about doing live streams like this. I streamed a bit back this spring but when it heats up in the summer I had to bring my computer back inside before it melted out there. :)
When I finally figure out when I can do it, I'll definitely announce it here on UA-cam, Facebook, and Instagram
Love it!!😍
so much detail! Nice work again :)
Thanks bud!
Lovely finish x
I love that color!
Love it!! ButI love everything that you paint!! So Great Job!!
Glazing by first piece of furniture today and idk why but I'm nervous lol you make it look easy!
It can definitely be challenging. If you mess up your wiping, just brush stain on again and go back at it. Oil based stain that I used rewets itself if you reapply soon. Unlimited trys! Good luck!
Just recently found your channel, I love your work. I really appreciate this shorter length of video as opposed to some of your older 30 minute plus videos.
Thanks! Most of my recent videos run from 15min to around 30 minutes. I try to keep them as short as possible but my recordings are usually 4-6 hours long and I have to find a way to cram as much info as I can in the videos so people can understand what I am doing and why I am doing it. 20 min seems long to me when I'm watching a video on UA-cam but I always hope that someone will appreciate the video as long as I am showing, talking, or teaching something relevent. I appreciate you dropping a comment to let me know what you like!
That turned out gorgeous.
Thank you!
I flip furniture to help me through college. Profit margins from just $60-150.
Thank you for such amazing details.
Your voice 😍😅
Good to see its helping you get by. It started as something small for me and I just went with it. My first dresser was actually when I painted TWO dressers at once, by hand. 9pm to 6am. Stayed up all night because I was excited to do a big project. Put them on Craigslist, and by 6pm I had them sold and delivered. $700 in my pocket. I realized I just made more money in less than 24 hours than some people make in two weeks. Thats what gave me the confidence to dive in. Thanks for watching, Melinna!
Stunning! 😍
Great technique 👏👏👏
It’s beautiful!
Thanks!
I love it. I wish that I could fin old pieces like this in Johannesburg South Africa. Your work is fantastic and made to last. Your videos are great. I have learned so much. Kj d regards.
Awesome flip 👍🏾
Awesome job!
Beautiful!!
Nice job
🇪🇸

AWESOME. Looks fabulous and great profit. :-) Way to go.
I love this. Very beautiful.
Thank you! Cheers!
@@ThatShabbyGuy 💝
yup, like this one too.
Very nice ! 👍
That came out beautiful! I like your tats btw.
Thanks! I'd like to finish my sleeve one day!
Me to buy it’s so time consuming!! I get fidgety after two hours.
@@juliepetrone91 I find it relaxing. I've dozed off in 3 of my 4 tattoo sessions. The 4th was just the small text that only took 10 min so I didn't get enough time to close my eyes.
I love your stuff you are really great redoing things
Thank you!
You really are very talented love your work.I’m a new viewer from Australia, 💙🇦🇺
Holy spray gun!!!! 🥰😍 Id be motivated to paint everything with it. Lol
I had a friend want to paint his motorcycle with it. 😂
Beautiful
Great video! I only stripped one old dresser so far. Used Citristrip. Omg. Never again! What a mess! It didn't work that great and had a difficult time getting the residue off. Thanks for the tips on using the other one. I'll try that next time.
I've used Citristrip 3 times and each time I always ended up back at the hardware store buying Klean Strip. I need to do a video on Citristrip because I see a lot of people that swear by it, but MY GOD IS IT SLOW/USELESS WHEN I USED IT!!!! 😂
@@ThatShabbyGuy same! I was watching videos where people used it with no problems but I sure didn't have the same success. Not sure if the difference is the lacquer or varnish that was on that old dresser versus newer furniture? But it sure didn't work well at all. I haven't tried it on a newer piece - probably won't either. Will definitely get Klean Strip next time.
WOW!!!! I love this!!! Very French Provencal Chic!!!!!! Tres Bien!!!
Great job
Very cool!
Thank you so much
Perfect!
