Well i guess even for Politicians that would like to change this, the blowback by the media and public and especially the more conservative part public will be career killing. Here in Germany Right Wing Politicians are already talking about how the Green Party wants to take away your schnitzel. It's a political hornet nest. People love their schnitzels and even though a ban on schnitzel was never a proposition, it gets gobbled up by this part of the voting population. I think the best way to go would be to gradually change how the subsidies work to make farmers move to vegetables and ingredients for vegan alternatives for meat and dairy. Death by thousands cuts

so many lies, so much bullshit. i dont believe that you believe that meat is inferior to plants as a food source. you may choose to eat plants out of misplaced empathy and worship of false gods but there is no way you think its better for you.
As a lazy (see: clinically depressed) home cook, it's much harder to overcook tofu or beans than meat. Also, it's significantly less of a biohazard than raw chicken if you're feeling too drained to deep clean every single surface you touched after handling it. Side bonus of vegan food I don't see enough people talking about: no bone shard or rubbery gristle.
And no greasy pots, stove tops and counters
Or the layer of scuzz/grease that you have to scrape off the surface of your leftovers before warming them up. 🤢 I don’t miss that.

If plants were subsidized as animal products are, you would be getting like a kilo (or two pounds) of potatoes for 10 cents, a kilo of tomatoes for 20 cents, a kilo of blueberries for 30 cents, and etc. That system would be much better.

No, it wouldn't. It would bring more factory farming, chemical use and soil degradation. Just exactly the same you see with subsidized animal husbandry. The way to go is to stop subsidies completely and encourage proper farming methods. Sure, the cost of food would go up, but so would the quality.
That said, none of that is ever going to happen because selling crap in packages is a trillion dollar business and the consumer wants cheap food so there's enough money for all the useless stuff people love to spend money on.
@@uweschroeder I totally agree. Never-ending subsidies result in inefficiency. Subsidies only make sense as a short term solution during a period of change. Any industry receiving subsidy must plan how to be viable in the free market. Then consumers really have the power to affect the supply chains. The status quo is pathetic, because even though I don't buy milk, the government is taxing me to pay for that milk (which I am morally opposed to) so that the dairy industry is protected from my boycott/protest by the government.
I also think it is easy to convey to non-vegans the injustice of such a subsidy system -- if someone wants to buy beef, then it is unreasonable for him to force a vegan to pay for this meat. Thus, I think it is possible for both vegans and non-vegans to oppose subsidies, which is necessary in a democracy.
All farmland in the uk gets the same amount of subsidy per hectare.
No matter if that parcel of land is used for grazing livestock growing cereals, growing fruit or vegetables. It makes no difference.
Tofu and lentils (my main staples ) are much much cheaper. Even if we go by calorie or protein or quantity 🤷
Soaked/home-cooked lentils bought in bulk are not only the cheapest but the TASTIEST. People have no idea what they're missing when they buy canned legumes sitting in nasty liquid & aluminum.

@@harveyplantharvester1502 yes. I've been buying them for years. Not just because they are cheap, they are so versatile and amazing. Always have cooked lentils in my fridge to toss into salads, soups or to make a stew.
As a vegan, I pay for meat production against my will and believes. The system is broken and needs to be changed.
Maybe there's a way to work out what proportion of one's tax is going to these subsidies, give the money to animal welfare charities/green campaigners/vegan campaigners instead, then write it off against tax.

In my case, I take a required megadose of vitamin B2 as well for a neurological issue--synthetic since 24,000% isn't common in any food--but it's another one that's much easier to get from meats.
The fish oil my doctor has me taking...well...and the CoQ10...um....
There's a whole list of nutrients, including aminos, that are exclusive to or more common in, meat products.

It’s still worth creating demand for vegan meat products. For many people it might be difficult to simply give up meat, so it helps to have an alternative. Also, if more demand is created, more likely will there be new players in the market and that will create competition which will bring prices down.

Arguments against this fact that I heard: I have IBS and this made it worse, This is just boring and doesn't taste good, I don't have time to be soaking beans or learning how to cook a lentil, whatever that is... Trying to address each one, I was overwhelmed with "reason" after reason why each of my points don't work or apply to their situation.
Ed, as an academic with a world-class ranked university, I can only ‘ditto’ the other responses to this outstanding piece - a short, well researched ‘documentary’ by you and your talented team. Factual information such as this is ‘gold’ to our vegan social movement.
I am heading a Vegan Enthusiast Group through the Emeritus College of a leading Canadian university. This group is leaning on it Climate Change Group to address ‘factory farming’ in its position and action statements - to date they have not even considered, yet alone addressed it!! Shocking! But to follow Dr. Joy’s advice - no shaming - our goal is the same and we need to work together.

Thankfully going WFPB+Vegan actually made my groceries cheaper than they've ever been. Sticking to natural whole foods avoids the overpriced processed Vegan alternatives.
It is unrealistic though to expect that a WFPB diet will become mainstream.
The vegan processed stuff is a once-in-a-while treat for many plant based eaters. And everybody knows it's highly processed and therefore not healthy.
I buy when these products are close to expiring date and have a 30%/50% or 70% off sticker.
Had a very decent Gordon Bleu last week with creamy melted cheese and the taste was very close to these from french fries shops who use factory products. But it hit the nostalgia spot and that's something very nice.
But now it's pumpkin and mushroom and soup season so I get my basic ingredients pretty cheap and the meals I cook are very healthy.
Till the next meat alternative comes along.
@@robsengahay5614 The key to making WFPB and minimally processed foods appealing on a wide scale is to take advantage of ethnic cuisines that have used delicious ingredients like miso, kimchi, gochujang, etc. Whole foods like mushrooms also have the savory umami flavor that most people get from eating meat and cheese. Nutritional yeast and pasta sauce are other great, inexpensive sources of umami. Spices from Indian cuisine and others help too.

Yep, what a shame Ed ignored the EU End the Slaughter Age initiative when it needed 1mil signatures and his outreach could have helped reach more people. I only came across it by accident when looking into if such things existed. Sent it to Eds team, they didn't care enough to give it one single shout out. It only got to 900k. It is a very lenghty, complicated legal process and I don't know when we get a chance to sign another one. big, big loss for the animals. breaks my heart. Joey Carbstrong ignored it too. big shame.

In most countries, including my country of origin (India), meat is by default more expensive than vegetarian food, because the subsidies are prioritized towards food grains and vegetables, which is the staple diet (even people who eat meat, eat more of rice and bread and veggies and meat is one of the smaller ingredients in the plate).
In India, while eating out you could easily compare that Meat based dishes were more expensive than vegetarian dishes. So, it was bizarre for me when I heard that in the west, vegetarian food is more expensive than non-vegetarian food.
Of course, that's another point that even in the west it actually is not more expensive, but is actually just a consumer perception.
Potatoes are dirt cheap, bread is not expensive either, and neither are vegetables, beans, rice, fruits, cereals, etc. You can go into the supermarket and see for yourself that the meat aisle is more expensive than the other ones. I live in the US now so I can speak from experience. And the better quality you want your meat to be, the more expensive it gets.
PS: India is literally the best country to be vegan or vegetarian in. You wouldn't even know you're not eating meat anymore, and you're not gonna miss it in the least bit. There's so much variety of vegan and vegetarian food you can't even imagine. All of it tasty AF!!!!! I think this is common knowledge at this point but I still want to stress it.

Chef here, all those points apply to intense battery farming, that have animals living in extreme close quarters with an over reliance on antibiotics, food bourne disease/illness applies to vegetables too, improperly cleaned and prepared food can cause food poisoning regardless whether it's meat or not, such as improperly cooked or stored rice.
The vast majority of people would prefer high quality, healthy, ethically sourced meat, so maybe you vegans should push for more ethical farming practices and not outright bans

It’s hard when you live paycheck to paycheck. I usually just go for whole foods, fruits/veggies when I’m really tight on money. Vegan cheeses/meats are luxury items that I’ll only buy if they’re on sale & I can afford it.

They are Rounding up wild horses to make way for more cattle. From what I’ve seen meat, eggs and dairy are expensive right now. "Gros-venor" is actually pronounced Groves-ner or Grove-nor. Otherwise this is spot-on. I have experience of the agricultural industry. The rich are paid public money simply for owning land, and possibly carrying out economically inefficient agricultural practices. Now that subsidies are being cut due to Brexit, poorer farmers are having to diversify into glamping, electricity generation, carbon offsetting, etc. Dairy and beef farming is being economised on zero-graze mega farms or replaced with lower-welfare, cheaper imports. The rich will remain rich, as they never actually needed the subsidy cash in the first place. Poorer farmers are leaving the industry. As tax payers, we're constantly lining the pockets of people who already enjoy vastly excessive wealth.
With the price of food as it is right now, we could use this immediately. So many more people are using food banks right now because of the cost of food.
This video was amazing. I can see the piece on who the majority of subsidies are going to making just about anyone upset. I don’t think many people know how these subsidies are being dished out. They’re not going to the small local farmer down the road.

I found that out ordering a vegan dinner at pollo tropical,a half chicken dinner was cheaper than a vegan ground chicken meat dinner, pushing the meat,I left a review on this and quit ordering there

The animal ag industry also gets subsidies for marketing. One year that I looked it up the dairy industry in the US had 50 million dollars in marketing subsidies.

Yet, when there was the End the Slaughter Age initiative on EU parliament website, calling for cancellation of animal agriculture subsidies, and we needed 1mil signatures, Ed and other influencers ignored our cries to share it. If it did reach 1mil signatures in time, the parliament would have HAD to address it. What a shame we only got to 900k and some animal rights activists (like Ed and Joey) did nothing about it

I have wondered on this, how come the farmers are not raising these subsidiary injustices inbetween themselves? Animal vs crop agriculture I mean.
The vast majority of crop farmers are not vegan, thus they do not want to make animal farms economically unviable. So while crop farmers lobby government for more subsidies, they would not want this to come at the expense of their animal farming brethren.
I commented on a couple of frugal blogs which advocate for buying cheap animal products that though the consumer may be able to save money by buying cheap meat and eggs, there is always a high price to be paid elsewhere - by the animals, the farmers and the environment. The bloggers deleted my comments, which was not unexpected, but still disappointing. If people are going to buy and consume cheap animal products, I feel that they should do so knowing there are hidden costs. People cannot make informed decisions if they do not know the facts about the food they eat.
I admire Ed for being able to talk so calmly about animal agriculture. I feel so angry hearing about subsidies paid to farmers involved in animal agriculture. And the EU paying farmers for owning farmland, regardless of what they do with it, is absurd!! Keep up the good work Ed!

100%, but electing the right politicians requires that the right people have power to educate the people. I worry about that a lot. We are currently seeing a surge of anti-progressive fascism swaying people all over the globe. Partly because they are funded by oil billionaires who invest in massive political propaganda campaigns that direct people to vote against their own interest to fight "woke" progressivism. It's just horrible.

Yay for the whole food plant based diet. It would be wonderful if we could have vegetable subsidies. I think that this system in even worse in the USA. To be fair, sometimes plant based processed foods cost more, but we can avoid this by buying locally grown and whole seasonal plant foods If at all possible. If we can get to a place where we depend more on legumes and less on meat analogs our health and budgets will be better for it, and we won't be propping up processed food mega corporations. Perhaps all of us should plant little environmental victory gardens in whatever space we have available -- be that a garden or an urban patio. The less we support these companies with our cash and refuse to craft our diets around highly processed foods, the more control we give to our local farmers, and the less we participate in their system. I'm not saying we can't ever have a beyond burger in our diet, but I think we'll all be better off if we don't lean so heavily on convenience foods, and all the waste that comes them.......

The real problem behind all this is capitalism, as longs as this is our mode of production, factory farming will never decrease. yeah. foos production is very important and that is gardening. it's very difficult to scale to 8 billion though. Which was historically fertilised but livestock due to human waste issues

Hi Ed! I had tried being a vegetarian for many years now, but i ocationally had eggs or fish. Yesterday night, a fish my family adopted "Franky" passed away, we tried to save him but he was very ill, i promised him i would never again go against my own values and the love i have for him and his siblings, just wanted to share that the kindness you spread does awake our true human nature, my family and I would never go back, for us, of the animals, for the planet.

Your videos are amazing. You have a way of explaining things that's truly eye-opening. I've been a very picky eater my whole life. I'm dealing with a situation and thought I'd share. I'm autistic, and trying new foods gives me a lot of anxiety. I've tried vegan and veggie options like a vegan burger and Quorn Mince, but the taste and texture didn't work for me. It made me feel nauseous. It's made me hesitant about trying more. I come from a meat-heavy diet, and that familiarity is hard to let go of. I just don't know if I'm strong enough, given these difficulties of mine. Like many people, the love for the taste of animal products and what I've been raised on makes it even harder to consider giving it up. If you or anyone else has advice on overcoming this fear of new food and textures, especially considering my autism and background, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Me too! But I buy in gluten flour. Loads of recipes around online, and can be frozen for later use. I’m a bit old school - been vegetarian for 38 years, so very little convenience food around in my day. I recall all the ‘beyond meat’ etc. coming on the market and being absolutely shocked at where they priced it. Understandable that in a cost of living crisis people subsequently saw meat free foods as an unaffordable luxury… Quorn sausages are still good though - affordable to keep in the freezer when too lazy / disorganised to make sausages at home…!
eh. vital wheat gluten is about the same price as cheap chicken. especially if you factor into account nutrients differences. chicken has more human friendly proteins

It raised two questions in me: What can the individual person do to stimulate the government (in this case the UK government) to abolish its unethical and illogical subsidy schemes? And; Are you familiar with methods of producing alternate proteins (like precision fermentation) and could you give us an overview, discussing their pros and cons?
This is really why we need to start talking about the metacrisis... it's all systemic and interwoven. The fight for decent food systems is the same fight for participatory governance, for decent public transport, healthcare, education, and for the rights of workers within these systems. And as a huge number of agricultural workers are migrants, poorly paid migrant labour is another hidden cost of cheap food. All the different strands of the fight need to come together. We'll never fight the corrupt system if we're fragmented.
Here in the US, Agriculture Fairness Alliance is doing INCREDIBLE work to stop subsidizing animal ag. They pay lobbyists to have a vegan voice in the government and can only do it with supporters' help!

The problem is that IF the government ever decides to shift the subsidies [paid by the taxpayers] away from meat & dairy, and stops bailing them out, there's a real good chance they'll only subsidize the GMO crops (as an incentive to farmers, who are already under threat to use terminator seeds and Monsanto pesticides etc.)
NOTE: I will now watch the rest of the video, but Ed probably won't be bringing up this point about GMOs being subsidized instead of non-GMOs.
GMO crops are banned here in the UK and I do hope it remains that way at the change over
Ed, your description of the history and current problems in government subsidies worldwide was clear and understandable. The hopeful future possibilities plantwise were good to hear. Compensating farmers well for dropping animal agriculture and using their land in other ways is solution-focussed, which is now the more important action to take. In fact a range of planet damaging industries might be incentivised in this way. No one person wants to experience loss, so we have to keep that in mind as we try to change these unhealthy financial traps that they've got themselves into. Another great point, and it's for the animals. Well done.

Thanks for the important dedicated and in depth video on subsidies. There was a comment on Be Smart on lab meat that said he/she was eating vegan alternative meat because it was cheaper. Some people just go by price, and even enjoy the added benefit of ethnics. There were comments there that were enthusiastic about lab meat and said they would switch over if it was a equal or cheaper price for ethnics and/or the environment. Be Smart tried the lab meat and said it tasted just like meat. Lab meat is already here.

My health has improved significantly since I have decreased my plant eating and increased my meat eating, and my grocery bill and waste has decreased too. Take industrial out of the picture and our food would be humane and more nutritious. Process and lab food is killing us.

Same story for oil subsidies, making energy from fossil fuels and plastics much cheaper relative to renewable energy and reusable materials like glass. It’s insane. I certainly don’t want my tax dollars going to food systems in which I don’t partake. I also live in a way that minimizes my landfill waste, so I don’t like paying the same trash fees as my nighbor who produces 10x as much. In my view, an overall revenue-neutral system where every organization is charged a “pollution fee” for its emissions, plus another one at the product level (and ultimately at the individual level), would solve almost everything. The money would be pooled and used to incentivize clean and healthful
things - until the dirty and unhealthful things are gone. Food and health care costs would be drastically lower.

@@Mallchad There animal agriculture thing has already been proven over the years by multiple scientist over the planet. Cows don't just convert grass in to meat, they are fed a range of vegetables and grain. Their existence destroyed carbon sinks. The resources it takes for one cow to feed 2 to 3 humans for a year is not good enough, to be sustainable.
Cows technically having everything we need does not make it more sustainable than just food crops. Even if cows were 90% grass-fed, the 10% is already huge and is enough to feed humans with the nutrients they would get from the cows meat. We have to grow crops to feed cows. That's why animal agriculture needs to cut down huge areas of forests and woodlands to grow food for the animals.
The manure is a waste product, its not the basis of fertilisers that is necessary, its a way of waste management. Also we would not require as much fertiliser as we are not as much growing crops to feed those animals.

We're pretty much already at capacity for the livestock needed to feed the world why the heck do we need more? What have such a stupid amount of farmland its not even funny. 50% of all agriculture emissions are suspected to be burning down forests which is illegal activity run with slave labour. I promise you that combined with wildfires, accidents and eqruptions completely swamps legal agriculture of all kinds.

No I don't neccecarily agree 10% of grain feed for cows is enough to feed more people than the cow. The bioavailibility of nutrients in meat and dairy is so much higher than grains it makes the nutrients in grains look no better than sawdust. ie, 1% vs 50% absorption rate of iron.... Before you even get into the fact that grains is very very bad for humans and we need nutrients only found in meat to heal properly. It's not "technically" more nutrients, creatine, collegen, cobalamin, retinol does not exist in plants.
I also do believe the statistics for "calories given to a cow per kilo of meat" thing is widlly misrepresented especially if you consider in US and UK 20-35% of cows at any one time may be dairy cows and life 4-6 years where they may make food but no "meat".
I would guess you are not very familiar with farming and nutrition if you don't consider manure important for fertilizer. Plants need a lot of nutrients and anything they're missing will also make its way into the meat or plant food and lead to deffeciency problems in a population.... Industrial fertilizers only come major nutrients not the small ones. Those get lost in waste, human waste, animal waste, plant waste. It *needs* to be recycle or we'll run out of nutrients in topsoil and have major problems. As a side note, more than 40% of waste treatment biosolids is sold as fertlizer, that's how important people think it is

I hate that our dietary guidelines worldwide keep telling us to eat more fruits and vegetables, yet the people in power make them stupidly expensive in comparison to meat and processed foods. Why can I get a pack of pop tarts or hotdogs of less than what a cauliflower head cost ($4.60 here)? There's something awfully wrong with those prices
because you're comparing preserved good to fresh goods. the latter will be thrown away when you don't buy it and has to be factored into the cost. frozen cauliflower or canned would be much cheaper

Swap it for chicken with the skin on = more calories and add butter with potato. Vegan food is heavily processed unless we eat beans (gas) or fruit (too much sugar if eaten in excess) or veg (little calories).
