    Great video. Folks may also be interested in knowing that the ballbearings and race slide out of CV housing, should they want to clean out contaminated grease. By inserting a small flat head screw driver into the 1/4" gap on the outside bottom edge of the CV housing you can compress and remove the large (3"+/-) retaining ring. This ring stops the ball bearings from leaving the housing so use caution here as it's likely one or two ball bearings will fall out as race clears the housing. Best practice would be placing a catch tray under the work area to catch the ball bearings should they fall. After cleaning, reassemble the ball bearing/race, grease it up and slide it back into CV housing and snap the retaining ring back into place.

    Thank you for the great tutorial. Replacing the rear inner boot on my 05 Sportsman went fairly smooth except for the OEM boot clamps. I would recommend investing in the tool for them. Ken.

    Great video Mark, nice job. I didn't get my spring clip to release like it should have so when I pulled on it the whole cv pulled out. With the whole assembly out I finally got the spring clip to release the spline. Then with the cv assembly off the axle I put the assembly back on using a 2x4 piece of wood and a hammer. After that everything went as it should except for a little difficulty getting the axle spline to go back in. Finally got it though. Really appreciated your video on it. Thanks. It's nice there are people like you out there that will take the time to do this for the rest of us.

    You are a fearless man putting the Stengel cutting wheel that close to your thumb! And thanks for this video! I have to do this both front and back on my new to me 04 700. It doesn’t look that hard from what I see. I’ve done one on a Yamaha kodiak but it’s a little different

    I stay away from any cv boots you can buy off ebay or other sites. Matter of fact i tend to stay away from mosy of the atv parts off ebay from past experiences. When I first bought my Arctic Cat I had to replace some cv boots. Not knowing I purchased some El cheapos off ebay, Raider was the brand, and they only lasted maybe 1.5 years. They actually started cracking in half that time. Not sure if the Polaris are the same diameter and size as AC but I can go into a Oreillys AP and pick up a Precision p/n 5860 cv boot kit and they are a direct replacement for my machine. I believe the boots are actually for a Geo Metro but they fit my AC perfect. I had a brand new spare Raider boot so I compared the two. The Precision boot is not only thicker but the rigidity of the boot itself was greater. I also like using the crimp style clamps verse the band clamps. The Raider boots had band clamps and they never stayed tight.

    Hi! First, congratulations for video. Secondly I would like to recommend you two things in addition to what you did . When you put the clamps fit with the other side . So , when will spin the wheel will better withstand some object that will hit the boot . And second : it is important that the inside of the boot not a dirty with grease . Bye . I hope you understand my English :)

    My 99 Scrambler 400 2 stroke needs new boots on both sides. I’ve never had a 4wd before so it’s all new to me. I’m still intimidated by it 😩. Just got my new boots in the mail today and I can’t seem to make myself get started on it
    Edit: ok I have the bands like the first one you showed. I don’t have that tool to tighten them so am I SOL??

    Good video. I would suggest that people clean their atvs before doing a repair where your removing a part that could allow dirt and debris inside your engine or in this case the transmission. A tiny piece of garbage can actually ruin the component.

    Really great video, has helped me out a lot so far.
    What is the name of the tools you used to tighten the clamps?

    • @CurlyQLink
      @CurlyQLink 8 років тому

      The tool used to crimp the 2nd band (the rear band) is called a "Single or Double Ear Crimping Tool." The band that was used is called a "Single Ear Band" because of the "one ear" that was crimped. These single ear bands are typically used on CV applications.

    How did yours go back in so easy I spent 2 hours trying to get mine back in. I gave up probly tow it to a shop and next time this thing needs work just junk it and switch to Honda. That is such a stupid design. You'd think they would have eyelets in that clip!

    • @chriscrowder8505
      @chriscrowder8505 8 років тому

      +James Pfleeger UA-cam search Polaris cv axle rebuild, and things like that. I already did mine. To get the cup out of the diff/tranny, take the other axle out and stick a long 3/8 inch socket extension and hit it out. It takes time but rebuilding the joint isn't hard. You'll also need to buy new clamps.

    • @chriscrowder8505
      @chriscrowder8505 8 років тому

      +James Pfleeger I will make a video for you sometime this week on how to reassemble. I assume you have a model year after 2010?

    • @chriscrowder8505

      +James Pfleeger disassemble completely. It's super simple, and them put it back together with new grease and boot

    Great video. I do all my own maintenance, and this definitely helped save some of the troubleshooting I would have had to do. I bought the OEM kit for my 07 Sportsman 800 but didn’t have quick access to the banding tool. I used a small pair of needle nose pliers for the OEM clamps, and as long as you have decent hand strength, it worked just fine. I found that during the boot install/alignment on the gear side (large clamp), hanging the axle so it was aligned straight into the housing made seating the boot and installing the clamp easier, and I was 100% confident I had it properly aligned. Jim
