I've found negative reps useful in the past particularly when I was starting out and trying to improve my pullups. I couldn't get many clean reps so I'd jump to the top then do a round of negatives til I was done. Definitely helped me strengthen those muscles faster to allow me to do a set of pullups the way I wanted faster.

Agree, using mechanical ways to cheat the concentric (I normally workout alone in a home gym) after exhaustion and still getting in a few negative reps at the end of sets is what I've done and seems to help. I've done this with both a 4 day and 3 day split and didn't notice a huge increase in DOMS.

    • @louislautz8838
      @louislautz8838 Рік тому +12

This can be a great tool if you are close to doing your first pull up. I am always a bit concerned with that method for pull ups though. If you cant support your body weight and you jump up and almost "shock load" your entire body weight onto your arms, this can lead to an injury. It may not be super likely, but it can happen.
Another easy method to work towards a pull up, without this risk is using resistance bands or a pulley system to take weight off your body. You can keep decreasing the weight/resistance until you can do a clean rep.
But I am glad that negative reps helped you and made you reach your goal! Keep at it!

People have to note that D. Yates got (a least a good bit) of the knowledge he's currently teaching from someone less known, Mike Mentzer.
This dude is the one who taught him, and other bodybuilders from that time, a lot of things related to the science behind bodybuilding.
He also put an emphasis on explaining that being natural and on gear had more to do with how your body recovered, and how most of the general stuff we hear from the top performers (and influencers in our time) is pretty much garbage, as they forget to tell you about how all the gear they're on is what allows their body to actually grow the way it does.
Ps : Currently on something close to the HI program, as a natural. Have to take into account muscle memory as well. But after a 3 years break and the loss of almost every mass I built previously, it took me about 3 months to get back to where about a 10 months of doing the 5-6/7 days a week bro split got me to, while barely adding any whey protein or other natural supplements to my intake this time around.
It mostly comes down to adapting your program/diet to how your body functions, and what nature has given you to work with. And some will have it easier than others.

Hey James, I don't typically use negative reps for my workouts; however I've found that they are extremely useful for improving pull ups, as you can fatigue on them quite quickly. When you get to the point of failure where you can't crank out any more, you can still jump to the top of the position and do negative reps on the way down. I wouldn't find any benefit in doing this with other exercises as I feel that pull ups to failure don't sufficiently work my back to its potential alone.

Negative reps/eccentric focus can help stretch and load tendons better and that can then help overall preparation of muscles across time (I mean weeks/months) because you are preparing connective tissues well - first. So - a muscle or muscle group is undertrained and you want to build it more - start with a program of negative reps focus for a while before you try to up the weight on the muscles. You get better form and better growth in the muscle because the tendons are transmitting load properly. Less soreness as well IMHO.

I would like to do negative reps but it´s just unpractical because A: you will need to use more weight. which means B: you need someone to help out who knows what they are doing.
This means you need to have someone who knows the movements, knows how to help out and has the time to do this.
I think it´s a great way to shock your muscles if it is needed but like you said you can´t walk in a gym and decide to start doing it.

Trying workouts with myoreps… extra time on the negative part and keeping the whole movement controlled …. From Dr. Mike, renaissance periodisation… damn hard lol, it’s good to try different workout methods over time as you mentioned and love the content here!

I just include negative reps in my normal routine ( when it makes sense ) while doing my normal sets and superset it when im close to muscle failure

Wanted to do pull-ups, and in the beginning i couldnt even do a single one. Then tried getting better using lat-pull down and assisted pullup-machine, which got me nowhere near a single real pull-up. Then tried negatives and that worked. I can now do 5 pretty ones.

Definitely negatives work especially for young natural athletes. I feel that as you get older, you need to be more careful with joints and recovery time, especially with hard drop sets and negatives.

I only use extra negative reps with machines , never with free weights and also not with legs because the weights are much heavier and straight sets are more trackable .

I used to do eccentric one arm pull ups to build up to true one arm pull ups.
It worked well and i could do one full range rep on each arm.
Although i stopped training soon after that to it was a wasted endeavour 😂

I try to do negative reps when I can't do any more, I usually do calisthenics so jumping pullups for example for the last few reps or the same for dips.
