This could almost be an early '70s Richard Thompson song, and that's high praise indeed. What a refreshing change to find a songwriter in the current mainstream indie/rock/pop genre who actually knows how to write a melodic song and doesn't just churn out the usual pentatonic nursery rhymes and/or chants. If Noel Gallagher was really the great songwriter that some people say he is, he'd be writing songs as good as this. Mercer is in a different league.
This little pumpkin is who I've always thought about when I listen to this song. She has known it as "about her" since she was 2. For us, it tells the story of my daughter that was born 320 miles away from me and stayed there with her mother. Thus began a long period of nearly bi-weekly road trips to be the father to my daughter so she wouldn't grow up without one as I did. The song is about her, me and her mother and always will be for me. Beautiful, but sometimes sadly so. The story isn't done yet though.
I feel so stupid, I've loved them/his music for years but..am I the only one that thought he was English? 😆😆
"and love is the ink in the well when her body writes" hot damn thats a lyric right there
I've said it before and I'll say it again; James Mercer will go down as one of our generation's greatest wordsmiths. All-encompassing pain, sorrow, and redemption through the human spirit wrapped up in 5 chords. What a virtuoso.
Ryan Berry preach!
Ryan Berry couldn't agree more man, have a nice one. It's reading a great book or poem set to music, ain't an easy task.
Love this version of this song.
What a great song. Reminds me of my beautiful little gift, Amelia Noelle - how precious, inquisitive, and humbling raising a child is.
So incredibly beautiful! His humility is astonishing & he plays so earnestly. Thank you James!!
september, for a fool, 40 mark strasse, and fall of '82 are the best songs from the new shins album ...love those songs and this video

Kevin Spacey, the king of the beautiful pop jam!
Thank you KEXP for showing me so much awesomeness.
James Mercers songs are so good I would almost trade myself to be him. I’m not sure there’s anyone else I admire that way. Leaves me wondering if his words were written as a matter of divinity.
Beautifully simple with something to say. Wish more of the world followed suit.
This song haunts me in the greatest way possible
