I love clicking on any tool reaction video bc I know for a fact 90% of the other ppl watching here are tool fans as well, one of the most obsessive fan bases 😭
I listened to this album a lot back when I was in high school, and this song was the one that put me onto Tool in the first place. Unfortunately back then I wasnt the most media literate person, so I never really put the lyrics together and understood them until many years later. It was actually my mother in law who figured it out! When we moved into our home we found "I know the pieces fit" written on one of the unfinished walls of the garage. My mother in law, being from the Philipines, didnt get the reference, so my wife told her it was a song. She went and looked up the lyrics and when I told her I never really understood what the song was about she said it seemed like it was about a relationship that was close to ending and the speaker waa desperately trying to get it back to the good times. Funny how things work out.
Rarely is there a singular interpretation of any Tool song and I believe this is intentional. When this song was first released I thought it was about society much like Xanny.. and as I got older I understood it to be about a particular romantic relationship. Now I believe it's both -- and the song intentionally sheds light on how this constructive and destructive pattern repeats itself on the micro and macro level. In short: Maynard is a genius.
1. You are adorable with your enthusiasm. 2. Tool will never let you down. Maynard wants you to take your own meaning away with each listening. As we go through life and experience things, these songs have a ever-changing meaning. 3. The music is composed by Justin, Danny, and Adam first; then Maynard writes the lyrics after that is perfected.
I'm sure I won't be the only one to recommend this, but you definitely gotta add the songs "Lateralus" and "Invincible to your Tool list. Two of their top 5 songs in my opinion.
Totally agree. I got into Tool about 10 yrs ago & for most of that time I didn't really try to find out the 'official' meaning. I had my own interpretations & just let the music wash over me. It has been interesting to read different interpretations & what the bands intensions were but, ultimately, I'm here for the music & how it makes me feel.
Schism generally refers to a split in churches or dogma such as when the Protestants broke away from the Catholic Church. The song Parabol/parabola is also a play on religious wording from Jesus’ “parables”. Maynard has a tendency to cleverly slip a ton religious tones into his lyrics. You’ll see them everywhere. Schism is about a failed relationship whether between families/lovers/churches…. Welcome to the family
The thing with the music videos is they are so visually stimulating while the music itself is such an atmospheric immersion, you'll just miss so much more in the music getting caught up in the video
I’ve been listening to Tool since *Aenima* hit in the late 90s, and I don’t really think they have a shallow side. They do, however, absolutely have a VERY eccentric sense of humour that I adore.
The best thing about Tool is that it speaks to everyone in their own way but in the same way. You don’t need to explain it. Because you intimately feel it. You are 2 songs in and it’s already a part of the fabric of your life. I have listened to Tool since the first song they released. It’s a part of the fabric of my life and so many times is the soundtrack for my life. Enjoy the ride!!
@garypointer3496 Tool "speaks to everyone in their own way, but in the same way. You don't need to explain it. Because you intimately feel it." Perfect encapsulation. Beautifully stated.
TOOL is the only tool you’ll need. The Grudge has helped me work out a lot of grief in my life, saw them live in Nashville (Maynard never came to the front of the stage) they played The Grudge and it changed my heartbeat to match Danny murdering his drums 🤘🏼 spiral out xoxo
I subbed for Tool 😎 I hope you keep going past your friends list. You won’t be disappointed if like truly one of kind excellent music. Don’t overthink the lyrics the first time through. These guys are geniuses. If you listen you can’t hear shit haven’t heard after hearing the song hundreds of times.
I've been a fan of tool since the mid-90s as a teenager and have been to a few of their shows and saw his other band A Perfect Circle a few times and one of the best concerts you'll ever go to and I've been to well over 50 concerts in my time.
I've been a tool fan for decades and always loved them but I didn't know all the lyrics until these reaction videos. Now I'm full blown obsessed with them lol and love them on an even deeper level. I can't wait to watch your journey down the rabbit hole.🌀Every song is amazing so enjoy!
You can thank your manager for my sub - here for the Tool and the ride into the classics that started it all like BLACK SABBATH and LED ZEPPELIN who has a song "No Quarter" that you should react to and then do Tools cover of that song. Also great that you got headphones for this ride - bands like PINK FLOYD, Led Zeppelin, RUSH and YES are not the same without them. You can hear the production subtle changes and all the background sounds. Pink Floyd is the most headphone oriented band ever...#darksideofthemoon
The song that made me fall in love with this band. No one compares, pure and simple. The video is a slightly surreal illustration of the lyrics and meaning of the song.😊
"WAKE UP" Xanny International. It's a song by RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. They formed in 1991 a year after TOOL. They are a mix of RAP and FUNKY ROCK. HARD BARZ. HARD BEATZ. MEANINGFUL LYRICS. Just be like NIKE and DO IT! 🙏🤞✌
Schism is about the breakdown of relationships and the deepening sense of separation that happens when relationships begin to falter and fail. We can remember when "the pieces fit" but over time resentments and mistakes cause those pieces to "fall away", as the separation grows, we lose our ability to connect and communicate. "Pure intentions juxtaposed will set two lovers souls in motion" refers to how our intentions toward our partners, though pure, are often at odds with the other's self-consciousness, and THEIR pure intentions toward us. This manifests as juxtaposition (juxtaposition is two things together that create a contrast, such as "making a mountain out of a molehill"). The consequence is a breakdown of the ability to make connection (we talk past each other). The very passionate love that brings us together drives us apart. But there is hope, because if the pieces fit before, they can be put back together. How do we manage this? By overcoming the desire to see the fault in the other and the resentments that go along with that. Of course, I could be over-thinking, over-analyzing and withering my intuition.... (wink to toolarmy)
Their videos are super abstract. They are made by the guitar player Adam Jones. He used to be a special effects creator for films. He worked on Jurassic Park and a whole lot of other films. When you watch a TOOL video, you are seeing something that is wholly his creation.. it’s crazy.
Been listening to tool for 30 years. Still gets high rotation through my air pods. Maynard “our songs aren’t some catchy tune you just start tapping your foot to”
Watching people react to music you love is strangely addictive, especially when the reaction feels authentic. I feel the same way about film reactions (Blade Runner being a classic pick). Tool fans seem to be fanatical (in a good way) about sharing the experience. Almost evangelical lol A nice boost in views for the channel too, which must be a nice bonus :) A great kickstart to gain some traction with the algorythm. Enjoy the journey !
i'm glad to see you on the tool journey, its well worth it! great reactions!! hope to see a lot more! tool makes you think for sure and they really are masters of their craft.
This song -- like a lot of TOOL songs -- is thoroughly ensconced in metaphors. Schism is actually about a deteriorating or disintegrating relationship and the frustrating and agonizing struggle to make it whole again. Maynard James Keenan is one of the greatest lyricists of all time!
I've listened to Tool for years and I 100% never understood all the lyrics and meanings of songs on the first listen, not even close. So there is no need to be confused that you don't get it, just keep listening and over time the meanings will reveal themselves to you based on your growth as a human. And just because someone interprets a song in a certain way doesn't mean that is the only way it can be interpreted.
You listen to my fav band Tool while wearing a Prince shirt who is my fav solo artist, two reasons to give you a sub. 💜 Looking forward to more Tool! #ToolArmy

Look at this song as a marriage, because it literally ruined my marriage when it first came out because it was exactly what I wanted to say to my wife about our marriage and relationship, ok I ruined the marriage with telling her that but I never would have been able to describe it that way without this song. The look on her face after was priceless and there was no turning back after that!
Would definitely watch a _second_ reaction to the music videos! Just never the first :D Be sure to mention that you'd already done a proper music reaction and they'll both do great IMO.

Adam Jones the guitarist used to work in the movie biz as a visual artist on movies like terminator 2 and Jurassic Park ECT. He funnels all that creativity into their crazy videos.
Don't feel pressured to understand the lyrics on your first listen. Tool can be real deep and are most often open to interpretation, just let it flow over you and the lyrics will tell you what you need to know!!
Tool's music videos confuse the hell out of people, but if you look into Adam Jones' background, it will make sense. The music videos do not necessarily have anything to do with the song or lyrics. I see them as separate art pieces on their own. Welcome to the brilliance of Tool!
Love Tool, also suggest a prog band called Porcupine Tree, the live version of the song Arriving Somewhere But Not Here is great! They sound as good live as studio on this one. Schism is good but has never been a fave for some reason. I like 46&2 better, Right in Two and Vicarious are fire, The Grudge is crazy good, still choose Descending as my fave these days by Tool.
Right in two is the best song for music lovers in my opinion. This song is amazing but it also trips people up the most because of the time signature 😂
All Tools videos were done by their guitarist, Adam Jones, who is also a fully trained Visual Artist in Hollywood, for many movies, and tv shows. In the history of the band, they've only made eight videos for all their music.
Nice reaction and great song! If you want to see the video, go ahead and watch it, but TOOL's videos are very particular. I recommend you to see them for your own not for the reactions and especially not the first time you hear the song. The video would surely distract you from the song and instead of listening to the music you would concentrate on trying to understand what is happening in the video.
this song is about how we as a civilization have lost the ability to communicate and society is crumbling because of it EDIT: ATROPHY = destroy , disintegrate , deteriorate..etc etc
‘Deteriorate’ and ‘wither’ might be the best synonyms for ‘atrophy’. I have a form of muscular dystrophy that keeps me bed-bound, and ‘atrophy’ is what happens to muscles one no longer uses.
@@riphopfer5816 yes , i understand that. I have stage 3 bone cancer and my muscles have pretty much withered away, they say I also have fibromyalgia , but who knows about that one
If you get worked up from the music some of the videos will freak you the fuck out. Adam jones the guitar player worked in special effects for the movie industry.
People interpret lyrics differently but I always see Maynard talking about the big picture. I don't think when he says "we" he means him and another person he means us as humanity. Just as he does in Descending. I also think the lyrics are wrong here. He says "Between supposed brothers... Between supposed lovers" Not lovers twice. Great reaction.
It’s easy to overthink tool lyrics. They wrote a whole song about it (not this one.). This one, Schism, is plain: I know the pieces fit. The relationship has crumbled. He insists that the shattered pieces can still be put to back together, ultimately ending in what amounts to a temper tantrum. No insult intended, couldn’t think of a better way to put it lol.
Tool is the connection of humanity. Everyone dislikes it first listen in a social situation. Everyone has an interal awakening listening by yourself.
I love clicking on any tool reaction video bc I know for a fact 90% of the other ppl watching here are tool fans as well, one of the most obsessive fan bases 😭

There's a song by Rage against the machine called Wake Up! - song from ending credits of the Matrix movie. You'll love it.
You must see Tool live! You have to before time is up. They are killing it right now and who knows when they won’t be around anymore
I heard Maynard say that he can't sing a Tool song anymore because of his age? He was sticking with Puscifer and the Perfect Circle due to his voice.
I would recommend to do studio versions of TOOL songs before you dive into the music videos or live versions.

All one has to do is hear tool once. Lol.
