This is kinda awkward, but... Valve has made probably some of the most beginner friendly guide to universal rules to character design that has absolutely stood the test of time, it's probably 10-15 years old by now: - Dota 2 Workshop - Character Art Guide (can't link due to youtube, sorry) It's really, _REALLY_ not an accident that a lot of character has a high _area of rest_ on roughly 75% of the character space - it's by design. Sticking tentacles on Tide because there's room breaks fundemental visual design choices explicitly written: - _By creating these larger less detailed zones, areas of detail will have a much greater visual impact._ - _Detailed areas should comprise a small percentage of the overall character, and be concentrated in areas of importance._ - _Larger areas with less or no detail read much clearer from game perspective than highly detailed areas._ It really cant be understated just how well this guide is recieved, you come across it all the time if you spent time on artchannels online. It's well worth a read as to why the heroes are made as they are, they go through every detail. The principles they go through are applicable in almost every aspect of visual art designs in general, not just videogames.
Tidehunter is one of the most iconic character designs and it's fucking PEAK because of its simplicity, he really looks like a sea creature. God damn I'd be mad if he'd be a generic tentacle Ktulu guy

I completely agree with elder titan's design having very little to do with his lore, but if we're gonna open that book then we should add weaver as well. All those heroes should follow arc warden's theme design.
Tidehunter has the coolest shard cuz it's so in character. One thing to make it more interesting should be to make it so that Tidehunter would use his fist if he's used the shard ability. Similar to how Dawnbreaker uses her fists.
I've never found Lion's design as bad. Sure he's ugly, but he's supposed to be. His lore describes how he sought revenge above all else, and as a result, transmuted himself into a freak. Very poetic I think. As for the backwards knees, heroes like Bounty Hunter and Phantom Lancer are anthropomorphic, so those backwards knees are actually their ankle bones, and they're standing on their toes like cats in real life.

I would have put Shadow Fiend on the list. Bring back the demonic dog design. Why did Valve do this to him. I hate Luna's look, the weird full body spandex jumpsuit has never worked for me. Her mount Nova should be a sleek mean-looking black panther instead of a shaggy lion thing. I think Dawnbreaker looks like a cheap mobile game character, I don't know why, maybe it's the monotone color pallette.
Nova originaly was a young panther, up until her remodel wich I think was implied somewhere in an gear description or something that it was another mount?
Treants original warcraft 3 model was a night elf tree/building that could uproot and could very slowly move. When you clicked the uproot button most of the foliage would shrink, TP's model reflected. It's the same with most of this list, you're not wrong that they're not great looking, but that's why the designs don't seem to suit the lore, it's a mish mash of ideas between blizzard and valve And if you did know that, I'll just gfms I guess

Believe me or not, i watch dota1 replays to look at old but badass hero designs to cope from dota2's mobile game graphics. I have cool skins in game but I dont fully use them and I try to recreate Dota1 heros by mix and matching items. Idc about the rarity and price of it, I just want my hero to look like a real hero not a banana like venomancer ffs.
Surprised shadow demon isn’t here. Also lifestealer maybe but the ugly model works well because he is scary, sets actively ruin lifestealers model tho, his best set is default with small cosmetics
I think Shadow Demon is alright. My one complaint is that he's so open about everything. He's supposed to be this manipulative cult leader but there's no mystery about him. No mask or hood or anything. His visual design communicates to me that he's a raging brawler whereas his lore and gameplay tell a different tale entirely.
@@wilsonsticks correct, shadow demon is all about building up power and potential with having great synergy. He should have been depicted as cunning and hidden, a literal shadow if you will. To be fair in dota the demons except terror blade are somewhat dumb, even void spirit says that about demons “Creatures of great power but limited intelligence”. Demons might just have tendencies to break out in anger, probably another reason why the rest of demons fear terror blade as he is the only brave enough to break out of the mold and have some superoffical restraint.
Elder Titans model is based on a minotaur from Warcraft 3, Valve ain't gonna change his model or even lore since in their mind a minotaur with a huge briefcase for a hammer fits the role or the forger of the universe

I can't get behind the Pudge sandler. But I DO get behind the QoP sandler. I mean she is essentially a succubus themed around pain and there is SO much you can do with that concept that her design really looks like the most generic and without personality idea they could have. To put an example you can look at her Dota 1 model, she looked way more sassy and agile and her wings had more of a standout wich looks better than her Dota 2 design and poses. I mean the only difference between her pose and a T-pose are the arms. Even a design more akin to Evelynn would be better.

I kinda preffer some of his look in Dota 1. Dragon Knight's Dragon Design is straight up horrible. There is not much to say about it. IO being on the community list for one of the worst is a blasfemy. He got the best wisp design in the universe!

Yeah.. Morphling looks so bad
Puck never looks good even with her sets but Trean Protector can still be made better with cosmetics, also the Priestess of The Moon from Warcraft 3 and Mirana both have ugly symmetrical faces

Maybe she isn't a **bad** design per se but it always struck me as undercooked with all the scale patterns and spikey bits
She looks like a rough first draft of a better design for me atleast

@@keklulu332 I definitely agree. There's not much to differentiate her from another ice dragon. I've always thought her scholarly and semi-civilized nature could have some influence on her design.
I will never understand the Wyvern sandler. She is not just a generic snowy dragon. She has that "Ice Queen" aspect in her design and her face and hair are totally apart from being generic.

To be fair for being just a Wisp, IO got the best design it could have. I don't understand what people see wrong on it, they really made a Good job at conveying its nature.
