Why do you call it predatory when it's a team that didn't use up all its cap vs a team who is over the cap. It's a smart play and oiler fans look dumb for being upset about it and calling the move dirty or predatory. Offer sheets keep teams like Edmonton honest

Except a decade ago everyone called it dirty when Edmonton and Kevin Lowe did the same thing to Brian Burke. Public sentiment was almost entirely with Burke.

@@WuklesA decade ago? So the game and the ideas should never change? It's not dirty or predatory it's brilliant and more teams should do it to keep teams in check. If the oilers don't like the mess they created that the blues are here making opportunities for players available. This needs to happen a lot more. This makes GMS work year round on signing their players instead of saving a few hundred thousand it costs way more

I didn’t say either way. It’s just funny how Edmonton is blamed both times in opposite situations. It backfired against Edmonton back in the day, I hope it backfires against St. Louis this time around.

@@Wukles not sure how it's supposed to backfire against the blues? They have cap space to take care of their players. If they don't get either player they just made a team in conference or division spend basically 5 million that they were going to use next year to resign Leon drisaitle teammates will be upset with those two because they took more money if they get one played good if they get both even better and if they get neither well fine cause that means someone's getting traded to make cap space hurting oilers or even better forcing the oilers to play most of the beginning of the season with a 20man roster weakening the oilers. So as for it blowing up on the blues it won't be an issue for them for years to come. Sorry for you if you're an oiler fan but honestly going nuts spending during free agency putting your team in cap hell is just how it goes. Lgb!!!

These offer sheets were a work of art by the St.Louis Blues. They picked the best team to poach two good players from for cheap...
Oilers had too much fun spending money in free agency, they had basically no cap space left(only about $300k), and their plan was clearly to lowball Broberg and Holloway with garbage deals and this blew up in their face...

This should happen more often . Stop the GMs from taking the summer off and pay these guys.

August is a little late to have RFAs still out there. I know they went to the finals, but you have to get this stuff wrapped up or someone else will swoop in.

Looks like the summer everyone got signed before Pettersson and there was no money to sign him long term. Same here, the Oilers didnt really give the two a good opportunity the last two years and this summer signed everyone else thinking they could squese these two. I think it was a good signal to the Oilers and the league to take care of the right players first.
Bowman as a GM is a non factor I think, but it wouldnt have happened to Holland

Tyler maybe you should blame Edmontons management.

Why is it so puzzling Holloway signed the offer sheet? Why blindly assume he would automatically play with Draisaitl or McDavid? He would just as likely still be stuck on the 3rd or 4th line if he didn't sign the offer sheet making much less than he is now.

What's an offer sheet? (sorry I'm still new to hockey)

With all due respect to Tyler’s comment about Torps, I think you’re marginalizing his opportunities. Sure, it’s not apples to apples in regard to Leon or Connor. But with the youth movement of the future Blues core, he has more possibilities than just playing with Torpo. Bolduc, Snuggerud, Stenberg, Dvorsky, Neighbours, and Lindstein, to name a few of the upcoming “possible” core” of young players to play with and grow his game.

They’ll get that with the compensation for Broberg leaving.

Kind of interesting why this hasn't happened to Detroit with their two big unsigned players

Player has to sign and Detroit has the cap to match

Players love it when other players get overpaid. They have no ill will towards players who sign big contracts at all.

Oilers are over a barrel. It would cost a 2nd to clear 3.5M in a regular situation, but the oilers are staring down the barrel of a shotgun and have ZERO leverage. If they really wanna get off of Ceci's deal, the other GMs likely will want a 1st.
