When this guy talks about ubi causing loneliness and unhappiness, he provides just opinion. There's actually a growing body of data out there on the topic. I'll admit that this is the only clip of the interview I've seen so maybe he knows something about something but his opinions here lack humility: he could very easily say "it's pretty complicated and I'm not really sure what to think". The interview would carry on without a problem. I think you were more gracious to him than I would have been.
As a side point, perhaps these clips should be prefaced with a real quick slide that explains the info about the interviewee that I'm sure is in the description but is additional work to look at. It sucks that viewers like me are too lazy to look, but the truth is I'm writing this comment without having a clue as to who this guy is, and I'm too unimpressed with his commentary to bother finding out. Yes, it's lazy, but I have to think I'm not the only person like this.

I will tell you one thing and that is this guy doesn’t know shit about art or art history. The one painter he used an example, Van Gogh, who he said had to work hard to create support himself, in fact sold only a couple paintings in his entire life, and he was supported by an (admittedly small-though that proves the point more so-if he was truly concerned with wealth he could’ve done something more lucrative) allowance from his wealthier brother. Almost like Van Gogh had a UBI and it allowed him to create amazing art, even though it didn’t support him financially while he was alive.
On another note: as someone who went bald in his teens, I have a hard time respecting anyone that has a hairline like that and doesn’t at least buzz that little tuft at the top of his forehead off. It’s shallow but god that might be the only hairdo worse than Donald Trump’s.

This is the most moronic conversation I've ever heard. It's called universal BASIC income. Not universal extravagant amount of money that you can spend endlessly income. Shockingly ignorant and worthless discussion from two allegedly smart people. Not to mention significant data that proves its overall effectiveness on every facet of life INCLUDING motivation for self improvement and striving for more meaningful/gainful employment.

The logic is flawed. UBI is not there to enable someone to just sit idly by and be miserable. It's there to form a basic economic floor under which nobody should fall. The current social security systems generally require that one stays idle, or otherwise they lose their benefits. UBI is a more incentivizing system, not less.

UBI would increase the money supply for everyone so everyone could bargain more and drive inflation. I would say negative income tax is better. NIT like if we subsidize someone income to match a certain income level if he earn more than he would not receive money anymore. Like if income level is 400$ and you earn 1 dollar we would subsidize 399$ if you earn 4 we would subsidize 396$.

NIT doesn't help "free" workers like moms and people taking care of elderly, or the homeless who very few companies would want to hire. look at the tent city in LA.. how do you help those people in a cost effective way? if they had a UBI they could afford to move to small town, and small towns might stop dying, less crowding in city would mean lower rents for everyone else. A mom taking care of her kids is better for society than forcing her to work at some shit job.

I like Tyler's thoughts so far from the podcast 30 mins in but this opinion on UBI in 2021 shows he has not educated himself on the topic in the past 10 years. This is an old take... a dinosaurs take. You have Andrew Yang a guy who was trying to create jobs for middle america come out and say they only ever re-skill about 2-5% of workers from one industry to another lol And so its necesary to have a UBI when driverless trucks and amazon kill 30-50% of the workforce (truck drivers, retail workers) in the next 10-20 years. That starting now is the moral thing for silicon valley and big business to do.

I grew up in Dunfermline, Scotland it is the town where Andrew Carnegie was born. The first Carnegie public library in the world was opened there in 1883. Through a trust he also provided the town with a large park, children’s clinics, children’s homes, institutes for both men and women and recreational sports, crafts, music and drama facilities, many of which are still functioning today as well as many grants that are still available. Our lives were enriched by having these.

To any young people frustrated with our economic state. Here's a word of advice from someone who is financially stable and very very happy:
    1. The government ain't fixing shit, and they never have. DO NOT wait for them! No matter how bad things are, they will never improve if all you do is wait for someone else to fix them.
    2. Work BETTER than your co-workers, not harder. Your employer doesn't care about your blood, sweat, and tears. They care about production.
    3. Make sure your boss likes you. Remember: your individual manager controls your financial destiny more than anyone else. If they're an asshole, find a new job as soon as possible. If they love you, stay around and opportunity will come soon. (PS, a great way to make your manager love you is by doing things that make THEIR manager happy)
    4. Here's the important part: Take care of your money. I've made a fantastic life for myself only listening to 3 advisors: Dave Ramsey, Mr Money Moustache, & JL Collins (those 3 are put in order of who you need to listen to earliest to latest in life)
If you live by those 4 creeds, your financial well-being and happiness will improve. Period.

You don't seem to understand how vast the difference in the quality of people's brains is. You speak like everyone is as smart and capable as you are. Your ideas are excellent. For the right person, in the right circumstance, in the right place, at the right time, capable of the right things. Again, your ideas are good, well, number 4 is good at least. The others are 'feel good' ideas that happened to work for you, with your brain, and the way your brain and sense of motivation and capability execute. I guess what I'm saying is, you're as stupid as a reasonably smart person can possibly be. I'm sorry that that's insulting.

Vices are stronger than virtues. If you give 1M USD to random people, you will enable a lot of their vices. For example, people with any forms of addiction - be it gambling, sex, alcohol, shopping, drugs, etc. - will eventually double down on their vices. People with marital relation problems will get divorced rather than try to work out their issues. And so on. Money can be a blessing or a curse.

Lex, it would be great to get Mr Cowen’s opinion on a very divisive subject in your country. In some parts of Oregon, people are allowed to wear guns. There are few mass shootings in those regions. Why? Because the mass shooters go for soft targets. We never hear of someone doing a mass shooting at a Police station or where people are armed. Boys and girls, please don’t be offended from someone out of your country giving a solution to the mass shootings. But the plain simple truth is that every qualified and certified adult in America must wear a sidearm for the horrific mass shootings to come down in scale. There is no other way if the 2nd Amendment is going to work. It can only work when everyone is on board. It’s an opinion.

UBI dosent mean more people are gonna sit around and do nothing. This one thing will make working to survive to having something to do and collect the spoils of your work. People will have alot more money to spend. Right now most people only make enough to survive. Take away the cost to survive and then we thrive. Less people will be sitting around. Your gonna want more money when you can actually save it. Now if your working its because you want to be working, pride in work will come back. People wont be so easily used. So if you need employees you need to treat them well. All the machine needs is money to flow. Ubi would allow us to evolve.

If a billion dollars doesnt motivate you with newfound time and resources to follow your true interests and passions, and you just "become lazy"... Im not sure you were motivated to follow your passions in the first place. Lazy people gonna be lazy. And I guess thats ok too? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also I feel like this world view always comes from people whos largest motivation in life is the accumulation of money. So I guess if you get money and youre that type of person, then yeah youre gonna probably be like "ok game over Im just gonna sit around all day because I have money" or whatever. But a struggling artist (or someone with a passion for something) who all of a sudden accumulates wealth doesnt go "Well finally. Time to kick my feet up for the next few decades until I croak." No, they get to work with the new resources they have available to them.

Clown. What a clown show! ubi for kids - because govt programs to help kids have done SO much good. Food for kids (USDA/AMS) has significantly increased child obesity, diabetes and malnutrition. 20% of public school graduates are functionally illiterate, which not surprisingly is not evenly distributed. In Baltimore City, for example the functional illiteracy rate is nearly 90%. ubi for kids IS intended to be permanent, if they don’t learn responsibility and independence early - they never will. There’s some shockingly mediocre thinking here!

Very lazy treatment of the issues around UBI by Tyler Cowen. This guy has no idea what he is talking about. Basically saying Mozart didn't have a cushion so why would anyone else need one, and anyone who wants a job could just move to North Dakota. This guy is nuts.
The issue isn't whether AI will replace ALL jobs, it is whether it will replace ENOUGH jobs to bring about social displacement and unrest.
A UBI needs to be at such a level that it doesn't distort labor markets. There should also be monitoring mechanisms in place to make sure there are no serious abuses. Such a UBI encourages work, risk taking and most importantly value creation.

So ill informed. 50% of your population has an IQ of 98 or less. These people are good people, but they can't learn coding, so to talk about that in terms of just retaining in new types of work is so ignorant to human nature.

But didn't you hear, they might be able to move to one of the Dakotas and slum it in the modern mines of fracking.
Tyler Cowen is paid by libertarian sociopaths from a libertarian sociopathic institution in George Mason University, they care little about human freedom because they only concern themselves with negative freedoms and not positive freedoms.
Ubi is a pure crystallized expansion of positive freedom. And that expansion is actively hated by assholes like Tyler Cowon.

The UBI according to Professor Richard D. Wolff would do the following to society. It would make two classes of people: those who work and those who get to stay home and receive the same money as someone who works. In other words, a Basic Universal Income would create division in society. Someone who goes to work and comes back exhausted at the end of the day, only to find his neighbor relaxing in his hammock after staying home all day and both receiving the same pay for example, would create anything but harmonious relations between the workers and the folks who don’t. It’s a hard reality; but everyone has to be in the same boat for society to work.

Ubi do not work like that, with ubi you receive money each month but if you work you have ubi + your job salary so you earn more than the guy doing nothing
