@@Stormsolid Did you watch the video? They clearly already programmed the robot. Do you think a company would recode the software for each new machine?
Yes the robots themselves are not new, it's the computer that is running them. Things happen in the kitchen that can change or vary the cooking experience. The idea is that instead of having a program that just computes an "assembly" of peoples orders, it's an intelligent computer that can handle sudden changes. Sometimes the deep fryer get's a little hotter after it sits for a few minutes unused, the next batch of fries to go in will cook a little quicker. If a piece of cooking equipment malfunctions or stops working suddenly (however unlikely), the AI can compensate for that by reorganizing the food production. Or sometimes you have that customer that insists on completely customizing their order (like extra crispy fries or no salt on the patty), the AI can handle that too, and it remembers you, your order, and when you place the order...for the next time you come in. Which is pretty creepy.
@@AlextheHistorian Software engineer here and I don't see a drop of AI anywhere in this chain. All the robots run on precise code that doesn't change. Even your example of the oil being hotter is solved by a simple thermostat and code that determines how long to cook based on the temperature (not AI, btw). The facial recognition would be the only "AI" thing and that tech has been around for a long time now. The memory of what you ordered isn't AI either, that's just regular software. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see any true AI here.
The key difference between machines used until now and new ones based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) is in their ability to learn, adapt, and respond to various situations. Previously, most robots in factories were programmed for specific tasks with limited ability to handle changes or unforeseen circumstances. AI-based machines, such as those in a restaurant making hamburgers and fries, can learn and adapt to different scenarios. They process data, recognize patterns, and perform more complex tasks efficiently, considering various variables. For example, an AI machine can tailor hamburger preparation to specific customer preferences or handle anomalies during cooking. Additionally, AI-based machines can improve over time through continuous learning, making them more efficient and adaptable to changing needs.
It will also automatically ask for a 20% tip. It's such an upbeat story about everything getting so expensive that they have to automate so they can still have the same number of people working making the new minimum wage. That makes sense. Journalists laid off and no one noticed.
A version of what you say is true, but it's been true for centuries every time a new technology is introduced. Civilizations adapt and adjust to the new normal and new opportunities, too.
Yeah, but the tip isn't going into a hard-working high schooler's pocket, or a college student trying to pay off their loans. It's going straight into the business owner's pocket, along with what would've been an employee's wage. It's just another greedy move by a business trying to move into a house with one extra bedroom.

Understaffed on purpose. The leaner the force means better bonuses for those in charge. It’s a main staple for management to make the workforce suffer for their bonuses.
People will blame raising the minimum wage, but they were always going to seek to have "bots" replace those jobs eventually. If robotic AI can replace a job, it will. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, pharmacists, etc... - these jobs and more are destined to face AI replacement.

That's not how facial recognition works. I mean hell, if you use any device that has a camera on it, it has the ability to scan your face already. This definitely the new wave for fast food, plus: no lunch breaks, no theft, no work drama, nobody calling out sick, nobody quits, nobody spitting in the food! Pretty sure all the fast food places will turn to this event eventually.
Whats crazy is if you go to Japan they already have stuff like this. Its nothing new just the fact that regulators here wont let things pass unless they can have stock options or a "whats in it for them option"
The simple fact is, if fast food gets to be too expensive the real competition will be when those reliant on fast food realize how easy it is to make a burger and fries at home.
Just wait until everybody has a robot that can make these fast food meals at home. This AI technology could put these companies out of business. Why pay a corporation when your bot can do it for free.
Have you been to a store lately? Ground beef is near $10 per pound. When I was a kid my mom would over stuff the shopping cart and barely reach a $100 total. Now you can't even cover the bottom of the cart for less than $100.
Most of your frozen and pre-packed food has a robot in there for at least part of the food prep process. Watch “how it’s made” episodes and really these robot restaurants are using very similar tech.
Its amazing how its not even an option for the shareholders to even think about taking less. Its either pass it off to the customer or try and get robots to do it cheaper.
The main issue is that there will be no change, there's no spark of change being motivated. Reasons as to why places like these can't find individuals is usually bc of economic unbalance either on a really high end or low end of the spectrum. With that being said, AI will only enhance the current state of which these fast food places are located in, causing stagnation and more of an economic collapse and divide. Whilst closure and failure is heavily recognized and motivation is sparked to create something new.
Yes but robots don't call in sick which cost employers money. they also don't have to pay workman's comp or have any Health Insurance. Employers have to match social security funds also... So they will be actually saving a lot of money...
In California a fast food worker is going to cost the business around $55k a year this year, so if you can fire 3 people at the cost of $30k a year for one robot, I don't think it going down for an hour or two a couple times a year is going to matter.
Good way to make consumers spend less. Not only does everything cost more already, but now there is less income for that community to spend. That’s a burning bridge. If people aren’t earning, they aren’t to to start spending more. Also, if the human labor cost is no longer an issue, then why wouldn’t that be reflected in the cost?
“Once the minimum wage went to $20-“ Dude, that’s what workers need to be paid to, just, exist. Housing is expensive, travel is expensive, medicine is crazy expensive, and it’s not like you’re paying for their health coverage. Smh
At first I thought it was because they couldn't afford to pay $20 employees to flip burgers but $8 for a cheeseburger? This is corporate greed at its finest. They will save money by not paying employees but still sell their products like if they had employees.
of course, its all a lie when they say they have to increase prices due to min wage increasing. All the while the CEO buys multiple yachts and homes and constantly brags about it, welcome to your world.
@@ImmortalDraylowell two things can be true at once. I think it is kind of stupid that fast food workers are asking for obscenes amounts of minimum wage. But I also do think it is corporate greed as well when food isn't being adjusted after they implemented the robots

Westlake in Daily City had a restaurant that had an AI making burgers. They got closed after a couple months because it wasn’t really getting customers after the novelty wore off
This will create new opportunities that people can't envision right now. It could also mean opening more restaurants with more job opportunities. These robots are only doing two jobs, frying burgers and fries that's it. And using computers to take the order, but that's already done in other restaurants.
thats so great, finally you can buy a burger and fries without worrying about the guy in the drive through window making love to it before he hands it to you
Submitting a work order and waiting weeks for parts from China should be a fun experience. And it should be a real treat when the Windows or Android OS crashes or misbehaves.
My guess is that it is modular for rapid replacement. They are also probably utilizing digital twins to monitor the equipment and be proactive with repairs.
No, they will have backup parts for everything and a few restaurants will pay someone $40/hour to be on call to fix them as needed…still a hell of a lot cheaper to do it that way vs human labor
I guess this will pretty much address the wage issues facing the fast-food industry in California. The Legislators have to come up with new ideas how to drive away small businesses in California now.

the problem is the sanitation of it as there needs to be someone watching to make sure you don't get food born illnesses or that the meal is kosher or what not. how many of these resturaunts will allow for substitutions or an extra patty to be added once they implament these changes. ie secret menu hacks like the mcgangbang mcdouble with a jr chicken patty may not be able to be ordered anymore. just imaging asking an ai for a mc gangbang or if mc donalds brought back the mc stuffin which was like a pizza pop or something similar. the computer would have no idea what you are talking about and would not be able to make some of these different things. it would be interesting and anoying for sure.
Hold on, minimum wage soon to be $20?! Holy crap, thats gonna force companies to move to automation. That’s just insanely high for a forced minimum by law
In California it effects only restaurants with I believe over 60 locations, independent , small chains, and restaurants will not be effected. What the market in those units unaffected will be is to be seen. I think stores will close and the big chains will dominate the smaller market. Read about the doomloop San Francisco and Oakland are in , this might push the state into that as well.
@RickW-HGWT: The 60-restaurant criterion counts the ones outside of CA, so a big established chain that puts in its first store in CA will be subject to the $20/hr minimum wage. Unsure if the escape clause for Newsom's friend who owns Panera can apply for any business that bakes bread on premises.
Clearly this is a bot comment but just for anyone wondering minimum wage federal hasn’t increased in a decade and it minimum wage at 20 is fair when considering how inflation has ruined this country it’s the only true way to combat it . Do you think wages are just going to stay the same while companies ramp there prices up every year who are people suppose pay for stuff on a minimum wage set in 2012 when prices continue to increase inflate going into 2025? Think about I know it’s hard for people who have money to think about the rest of the world fighting to survive but life isn’t just about making money people have completely lost their moral values and evil corporations and media are at the root of it and shame on our government for back them and allowing this. Government is now ran by elites that heavily fund presidential campaigns and expect a huge return .
Oh, really then explain the two hour wait for a burger from in-N-Out chain across the nation. Also, the prices for this burger will probably be higher as soon as those machines start breaking and they get the bill for the maintenance. Also, the machines are hydraulically powered, which means at some point they’re going to be leaking oil so you could potentially be consuming oil
The startup costs for restaurant like this must be insane. How expensive are the burger flipping robots? EDIT: on second thought the restaurant probably leases or rents the robots.
Initially it was in the tens of thousands, but to make it more affordable in the QSR world, there is a monthly fee which includes all updates in maintenance. I believe it's roughly about $3,000 a month. I am a shareholder as well.
I bet its still $10 per hamburger and $5 for frys. Like its all gross stop eating at these places. Oh ya how will things get cleaned if theres no people.
The maintenance will probably cost less than employees calling in sick, having to pay health care and workman's comp, and matching social security funds. Most people don't understand how much employers pay to have an employee...
It's cheaper than a human, once 50% of the restaurants have ai the companies willll give them out dirt cheap and will just pay monthly for tech support, software program and maintenance
As a consumer, I don't mind knowing a robot made my meal, and not having to worry about someone behind the grill who's not following protocol or washing their hands.
I remember when there was a restaurant on Lake Avenue in which there was a robot serving your meals. This was in the mid 1980s Now this. Very interesting.
so in practice is the running cost cheaper than a traditionally human run one? i could imagine even if it's not perhaps if it spreads the equipment costs will go down with larger scale production. i guess robot maintenance workers will then be more in demand than now...
There would be none. The restaurants rent the equipment. They would just go in and swap parts and will recycle the bad parts and reuse the raw materials to be remade into a new robot. It's worth while if they can get the place working 24 hours including holidays. They can charge more for each meal. It's cost effective.
The investment prob won't worth in highly competitive highly fragmented industry. McDonald's can pioneer it but they know the game better.. Robotics manufacturing or logistics make more sense if you know what I mean
But how sanitary is it?? Is everything being properly cleaned?? Plus how do you know if you’re getting grease from the gears of machine in your food lol

hmm maybe the better question shouldve been, how much have you saved in having to pay wages bc you now have these machines...
@@xuimodomg the logic 😂
@dpalaoro that was exactly the logic this AI restaurant was built on yet its so hard to understand...
They keep saying AI but all this is automated robots that we've had in factories etc for decades.
