  • Imagine being asked to take charge of one of the bloodiest prisons in America, where cell-mates chose to sleep in shifts in order to protect each other. Burl Cain, Prison Warden of the Louisiana State Penitentiary (also known as Angola) was given this charge, and became committed to changing the reputation of the prison. He describes his winning mixture of devotion and discipline. Shirley Hoogstra hosts.

I've never been in trouble but God forbid if I ever had to go to prison, I would want to be in Mr. Cain's. He doesn't play but at the same time, he has made a big difference in prison history!

I know your comment was 6yrs ago, but I agree! But i believe Warden Cain is an exceptional warden. I wonder if he is still the warden there. I do believe all types of criminals, with the exception of chomos, are possible of rehabilitation. Chomos just cant not. The point of prison from what i thought was to not only punish them for the crime, but to also rehabilitate and try the best they can to make them a better person. Most wardens arent like that though. And most correctional officers are there to just bully the inmates. Most of these CO’s have little man syndrome with little 🍆 energy that get satisfaction out of telling others what to do in prison bc they know they aint abt to do that out in the real world. Makes them feel big and bad i guess. Who else would take that low paying job as a CO? Yeah, a lot of criminals will never be able to rehabilitate but there are some that can, even murderers. I know with some its just not worth the risk to release. Cain is definitely an awesome and fair warden. He understands he is not there to just punish the inmates. I really like the fact that he basically forces them to work. I am not into religion by no means but I do believe he is on to something. Is he still the warden or do you know?

@@bigmama72. omg I didnt think you would comment back, especially not that quick. You is ON IT! Lol. That is sad to hear though. I hope the new warden went about it the same way. I believe some of those inmates do deserve to live a somewhat normal life, even if thats in prison. Cain provided that the best he could. And damn, 2016 was forever ago. I always forget how old these videos are. Thanks for writing back

Watched several videos on this man and his prison, He is truly a good man that deals with men that have committed awful crimes. It's not necessarily religion, it's morality he preaches. As he says moral people don't rape, pilfer, and steal...

Nothing is more important; standing in obedience to the King of kings and Lord of lords. Those minds and harts are transformed by the LOVE of Jesus Christ. Without Jesus we can do nothing. Without the spirit calling us out of darkness we can do nothing. If we had not been called, we would not be living only existing. Purpose without Christ is found where sin is found deeply rooted. May the Lord continue to bless the man and the ministry in Jesus name. Amen!

Samuel Wurtz his wife is up for fraud and I think he had to retire because he used Government money for the prison on his home etc , I don't knock what he did, but I have a friend In LSP and Burl isn't as squeaky clean as his says he is please google him and his wife, I think she is looking at a long time, but he did do some good, I only wish he would allow the inmates to learn other things like there getting their high school diplomas etc they only allow them to study the bible classes but if they got them learning more, I think it would go a long way for rehabilitation to inmates who will be released and enable them to learn more trades so when they are released they have more of chances to get honest work , recently the medical care in Angola , has been deemed bad it's in the New Orleans advocate newspaper about the lack of medical care so I do think Burl did good on the things he bought to Angola because it seems it is struggling since his absence

@@oldorleans9583 Hi, this is in reply to your comment about Warden Cain. I have heard that when someone is doing an important work for God, he becomes a high profile target for the powers of darkness to take out in any way they can- temptations are intensified ,and the evil one will even go after the family, as it seems, according to what you have written, is what happened with his wife-so that the work can be discredited, and taken down, and ended. Also, if Warden Cain had offered other classes besides Bible, would the transformation have happened? if they'd had a choice, they might never have heard the Good News. The hope giving, life giving, freedom even behind prison walls giving, Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ. Just sayin'

Thank-you for caring and providing hope for the prisoners. I enjoy watching the videos of the life’s and what’s going on in your prison. The toy store, hospice, college, working farm, TV and radio station, etc. You are a very caring person and continue to do positive work. More prisons need to use Angola as a blueprint to use. Warden this was your calling. Bless You.
