I agree. I used to live in Dawlish, and often thought it'd make sense to use a PPM / Class 139 type set on the old branch line (now only getting very occasional freight traffic) to restore passenger service between Newton Abbott to Bovey Tracey.
Glad someone made a video of this once in a lifetime event, tracklaying and reopening seemed a lot quicker than the full Metro equivalent when the line opened from Snow Hill to Priestfield pro rata.
Yes, the mistakes were made during the mid 1960,s,when the Wilson led Labour government, decided to close Snow Hill Station in Birmingham, therefor closing the line to Wolverhampton through West Bromwich, a truly epic disaster!
I suppose you can’t use lighter rail because the track has to support the ballast train. Good video. The only thing missing is how the old track and sleepers are recycled, repurposed or reused.
The steel is easily recycled. The wood was likely treated but could be turned into chips or used as is in landscaping for raised planting etc, or alternatively to repair / rebuild coastal groynes.
Awesome. I'll have to head back over to that part of the world and ride it again, now this has been done and also the 139s have been refinished in WMR colours.
Electrifying the line, while expensive, would also require a replacement of the rolling stock on the line. Currently, it's operated by a Class 139, which uses a small 2.3L LPG engine plus a flywheel and regenerative braking for a service which is already far more efficient than a Class 153.
@@mittfh I am aware but those trains were cheap to build and they could easily both be put into preservation. They're almost 15 years old and will be over that if electrification work happens soon which isn't old but isn't new either but I think personally that the withdrawal of them could allow for the new electric stock to be driverless

Very good, but I turned down the irritating sound track.
Well done.
Even when I’m not travelling the words ‘bus/coach replacement service’, fills me with dread and misery.
The Class 139 is pretty much a bus; bus replacement doesn’t mean much difference!
Agreed. Could've done without the bidip dip di boop da shite though
The 139 is something the world needs more of

I was hoping that after all this trouble we would see a grown up train on it.

Thats a fecking bus
“Passengers will benefit from a smoother, more comfortable ride.” People are too soft these days.
I walk further than this branchline just to get to my nearest station
I'm astonished this line survived the Beeching axe.
Connected to the Canal Basin at the other end. Plus, being so short, cost of removal may have been a factor 😂
And in turn Brechin himself has now been axed !!

Probably difficult to recycle as they were more than likely treated with creosote?

Good to see this investment made to hopefully keep it going for the rest of the 21st century and beyond!
Nice work, but why the dreadful, annoying music?
Indeed, what a god awful racket!
Hard to take video seriously with that strange noise. Realised late it was a serious video.
Isn’t the shortest between Wrexham General and the unused ( not disused an it gets 2 trains a day on
Y. Ow). Wrexham central
Nope, this stands at 0.8 miles and is the shortest one in Britain.
10/10 for engineering, 0/10 for muzak!

Electrification will most likely happen when the tram takes over.
Why a combination of concrete, steel and wooden sleepers? Seems rather pointless, why not just one type of sleeper?
Possibly a combination of cost vs cutting noise?

drop the music plse. It's bad.
Turn it off. You are allowed to.
