  • This one was a doozy. It's got some woodworking, some 3D Modeling & 3D Printing, some CNC work, and some textile work (thankfully no sewing). All to end up in a DIY floor lamp that stands over 6 feet tall and is adorned with sloths and llamas.
I wouldn't have made this if not for the Because We Make podcast, and their Enlighten Us challenge. By now it's too late to join in on the challenge officially, but you can still make your own light fixture, just for funsies. Either way, be sure to check out the podcast (BecauseWeMake.com), as well as the hashtag #bwmenlightenus on Instagram to see all the great projects.
This project also would not have happened if not for ‪@MorleyKert‬ and the plastic connectors he designed to create the dodecahedron from the craft sticks. That was a result of the #MysteryMakerCollab, and he nailed it. It was fun to merge that collab with this challenge and get a neat new lamp.

It's so cool to see how you transformed the connectors into something totally unexpected! Happy that the holes I incorporated to save on filament proved useful in another way :) Awesome, fun project!

Those extra holes were vital! I was going to lace the panels up by attaching them to the craft sticks somehow. Then realized the "corners" of the panel would be better to hold it all taut, and you had obviously planned for that 😅

Gromit! And you have to love anything that combines llamas and sloths. Nicely done!

Incredible build bud! So many different parts to the design and the swivel shelves is such a cool idea! I like how one challenge morphed into another challenge! Great stuff Justin!

Thank you Ethan! I was originally going to lock them into place with some set screws, but then didn't like the idea of each shelf having a screw visible like that, and thought the added fun of being able to reposition them was too great to pass up.

That was a great video I really like how you merged two challenges in to one. Now the llama fabric makes sense.

What do you mean "now" the llama fabric makes sense? It ALWAYS makes sense to include llamas!

Thank you Jeff. Lamp like you, but, it's feelings just aren't as strong as yours seem to be.

The lamp looks awesome Justin and that's right don't let those haters get to you if you like it that's all that matters, even if you used an excessive amount of orange 😁 great job man👍

Could you have reused the pipe from the original lamp that you got the cord from? Only asking because I have a similar old floor lamp that I want to redo so was hoping to reuse the pipe as well as wiring. (Assuming I can get all the arm parts removed).

I thought about that. But that lamp had the little reading light attached to it, and I'm pretty sure I would have had to cut that part off, and I didn't want to deal with all that. Also, using a bigger pipe meant more stability. I wasn't completely sure how top heavy the thing would be, so I didn't want to risk a pipe in center that could flex or bend when the lamp was carried sideways, if that makes sense.

Bear Maked makes sense especially the weight issue. Hadn’t thought of that. 👍🏼
