Beastars Wouldn't be Nearly as Good in 2D Animation

- Given Studio Orange's reputation, I don't think the title is that controversial, but I still wanted to dive into what I think Beastars does so well and how CG lends its strengths to those elements and ultimately makes for an incredible story and show. Of course, we have no idea what a 2D adaptation would have looked like, but I think it would be hard to compete with what we got. But let me know your thoughts and enjoy!

It would be agonizing to animate if it was 2D, judging from the manga's artstyle.
Indeed, and this is why we shouldn't support 3D animation.
3D animation is easy, so easy that it's tempting to abandon 2D animation in favour of it, like what's happened in America. 2D animation takes forever, and costs a lot of money unless you overwork your animators (which you shouldn't), but it's so worth it, and I'm terrified of all anime one day looking like Kengan Ashura because of this
@@marsupialmole3926 it's easy if they did it half-heartedly. Every kind of animations is hard when people did their best to make a worthfull amimations. 3d is judged to be easier because all you need to do is to move the models, but designing the models itself isn't an easy task imo, and they need to put extra care to make good movements and nothing like hair/hands goes through the body or the clothes like it happens in most of Project Diva MVs
@@justsomeonewhowantstoenjoy8222 I'll start respecting 3D anime when 3D anime starts to look like a 3D arcsys game
@@marsupialmole3926 Computer animation is at a point where, if done right, it can be made to look exactly like a traditionally hand-drawn show. Better, even. It's going to take over anime completely in the next few years. But it is going through some growing pains right now. It will be worth it though, as we'll get more nuanced animation and less characters standing stiff-still while only their mouth moves because that's all the budget would allow for.
@@jessip8654 No it can't look exactly like a traditional hand-drawn show. Arcsys is better at it than any other company right now and even they can't quite capture the sheer flexibility of 2D animation. And it is telling that the best looking anime of the past 5-10 ears was Megalo Box, the one explicitly done using the most traditional method and aping the style of anime from the 80s.
I don't disagree that it will probably take over anime, but that's because it's cheap and easy by comparison to traditional 2D animation, not because it can actually do what 2D animation can do
berserk really lowered everyone's expectations of 3d anime but LotL and Beastars really show that 3d isn't bad as long as the studio pulls their head out their ass

Honestly, I think that something that the manga did that the anime would never get truly right is the paint scene. While not a inherently bad scene in anime form; with the loss of black and white it also lost the factor of the paint looking like blood. Which (tiny bit of a spoiler If not to the scene yet) I think when he nonchalantly smeared it on his face it showed he was willing to do anything to protect haru. Even if it ment he had to get bloody to do so.
Ah, when he see [spoiler] meet [spoiler], he looks angry and squeeze 3 paint in his hand and place it in his cheeks?
I don't agree, I thought it was pretty well conveyed that the paint looked like blood. As an anime only viewer, it was my probably my favourite scene of the show.
Mellokhai I’m in the middle. As someone who saw the anime first, I got that it was supposed to be like blood, but the manga definitely conveyed it better
the clours kinda conveyed for me how mixed he feels about Haru. Either as prey or as his crush. I liked that scene in Manga and Anime very much.
This mirrors how I felt when the Chimera Ants of HxH's 2011 anime had blue blood as opposed to the red blood I imagined while reading the manga

It’s manipulation but ok-
Having just gotten up to date with the manga... No. Louis and Legosi's interactions are not homosexual. At ALL. But a strong sense of camaraderie does form between the two. Trust me, what Louis does at the end of the murder mystery arc really does cement them more as two men who need each other because their goals align in complete sync with each other than lovers. Also it's kind of fucked up and I would be constantly feeling guilt if I were in Legosi's shoes for the rest of my life if I hooked up with Louis not too long afterwards. Even if I understood that HE was okay with it.
They did tho my dude like boi

I was assuming the scene with the stuff flowing through legoshi's veins was to symbolise adrenalin, like it was his brain making sure he had energy/speed to "kill and eat his prey". I can see how that could be easily misinterpreted but I think that's the angle they were going for.
Stabby Stabs i feel now it’s good but in the beginning it was misleading because I thought he had instincts or like powers or a curse while others didn’t
I dont see how people missinterpreted it.I felt like they did a good job establishing that carnivores have their feral instincts, and when Legosi smelled prey, that was a good way to show his instincts taking over.
I kinda knew that it was their instincts taking over (thanks to saberspark lol), but I didn’t know if that visually happened on all carnivores, or it was just emphasis in legoshi’s case
I only think of real things that can happen so much that I didn't even think twice about my answer to the red veins thingy being instinct.
When I first watched it I thought the fountain had some sort of spell or drug and he was being infected/transformed by it. It becomes clear that that's not the case, bit I definitely agree that it felt misleading

Just goes to show how good the 3D animation really is. Like, before this video pointed it out, I thought the show was 100% CGI.
Minus the opening, Haru's sex forest, & Rouis' backstory. Because *_obviously._*
I noticed that the animation with other minor characters was similarly different from the ones that moves with their entire body ( legoshi, haru, louis, etc...). At first, i doubted my observation, but the more i took a closer look at, the less i doubted, and was puzzled of what it was.
Turned out it was 2D but only for the minors, i should've figured it earlier, but hey! I don't know alot about animating.
I'd admit, I was really against Beastars getting a 3D adaption purely based on Paru Itagaki's original art style. I didn't think it would translate well.
Orange did the right thing I made their own style while also respecting the original pages. While you could say that some of that respect is loss with a particular scene (Bill gun) not appearing or entire scenes being replaced with a different environment. I can appreciate what length Orange went to make Beastars a noteworthy anime experience!

Whenever the Bill gun scene is brought up I never hear anyone question the part of it that I can't find a good answer for, how the hell did Bill learn of Louis' past by just visiting the Black Market? The only other person who knows is Oguma.
@@CaptViewtiful98 Good question, I don't really know how to answer it other than two suggestions:
1: The most unlikely, there's a livestock document available in the black market similar to the mayor's. I doubt this particularly based on the dialogue Louis shared with him.
2: Bill visited the broken down building but again this is flawed, nothing about the building explicitly states that it was a made for livestock other than cages.
@@CaptViewtiful98 Don't forget the mayor, but the real question was who did he get that info from? Either there was a rumor that the new candidate Beastar was actually a livestock, going around the Black Market or something else.
I know it looked so well old school comic like and almost like those kid books back in the 80s wich was really cool since it was great contrast with the narrative and theme
One thing I find strange about the art style of Beastars is how different the eyes are of the various characters. Legosi, Aoba and Bill have these large white eyes with tiny black dots as their pupil, no iris. Louis, Juno, Els and Jack have what you'd call the stereotypical "anime eyes", with large, colorful irises. Haru and the Mayor have small dark eyes with no visible sclera, looking more animalistic. Finally, Gouhin has no visible eyes at all (though there are probably also small black eyes in the middle of the eye spots. I don't find any logic in what these different eye types represent.
In case of Gohin adding eyes would just mean extra work for the animators. In Haru especially her animalistic eyes are there by choice to make her look more fragile/adorable. Same goes for the Mayor who supposedly got the plastic surgery for that exact purpose.
I can’t WAIT to see how they animate some of the stuff that happens in the manga

One big thing about why 3D is helpful for this show: Ever notice how animators barely ever draw a point to the teeth on characters with sharp teeth? They only ever really draw it when they want them to look frightening- whether humanoid or more animal-like. I can only assume that's because it's annoying to draw so many edges, and especially to draw them realistically. But in Beastars? They don't have to draw them each time, and that's especially important for Beastars, because they not only draw each point but the way the teeth are shaped and laid out is VERY realistic. It would be a huge hassle to draw each time, and I think removing the aspect of such realistic, predatory teeth would be a small but important detail missed. When you have to stare at their teeth the whole time, being so shamelessly menacing but yet so harmless while being in the hands (or jaws, haha) of a good person.. that alone gives a feel for the vibes of the whole show. It reminds you that although the character you're looking at is a (normally) harmless and kind-hearted individual, they are still a predator, and it shows- whether they are acknowledging that or not. Their vicious teeth are basically symbolical of that.
That's a great point. Never even thought about that.
@@MrDestroyedSoulx It's something I really admire in Beastars. They don't water things down at all. If your teeth are intricately designed to kill, then your teeth will always look as such. It doesn't matter if you yourself are not a menacing person (much like Legosi,) your body will not change to fit your lifestyle.
Legosi is kind, understanding, gentle, and shy.. he is anything but menacing, or bold, or dangerous. In personality, that is.
But his body is a wolf. Something menacing, bold, and dangerous. This show doesn't try to change his appearance to fit his personality, at all. To do so would kind of defy the point of the show. It'd imply he's somehow different from other predators, and that's why he's kind! He isn't scary, he isn't even capable of harm! Look at him!
But no, he's just like all the others, even down to his behavior at his core. He, such a non-violent person, is even a dangerous one. He himself nearly KILLED a person, not because he wanted to, but because his body willed him to. That's what it is to be a carnivore in this world. No matter WHO you are, WHAT you are shows first. It's up to the people around you to try to see past it, rather than to pretend all is well in their world and pretend carnivores can be just as approachable and non-threatening as anyone else.
They cannot. All they can do is accept them for who they are, whether their teeth are made to kill or made to graze.
...To summarize, Beastars is faithful to the world it has set up. It makes no exceptions. If you are designed to kill, your body and mind will always show it to some extent. If you are designed to run and to hide, your body and mind, too, will show it. And I love that. I've seen one too many stories that try to be deep by starring a character of some sort of 'dark' race, only to tone down their appearance and behavior to look more friendly.
@Ty The Great Just because 2D CAN do something, doesn't mean it's easy. It would take insane patience just to get even the teeth at this level of detail in every frame.
Beyond that, there's also lots of effects 2D just cannot do, so that first statement isn't entirely true either.
And there's nothing inherently bad about the way CG looks. The only reason people dislike it is because it's not common, so it feels awkward at first. Then you get used to it, and suddenly you don't care anymore.
@Ty The Great Do you really think the animators would take the time to do something that difficult? The difficulty level IS relevant. Why? This is a TV freaking budget. They're not going to spend that much money to get the point of a carnivore's teeth so detailed. And if they for some reason did, they'd have to... that's right, cut the budget in other areas. They'd have to sacrifice movement in favor of stiff characters like they do in anime where the characters wear elaborate clothes, or maybe have the characters randomly turn 3D anyways the moment they have to actually move for once.
You're imagining a world in which whatever can be done, will be done. But this is not that world, so that's irrelevant. They have a BUDGET to follow.
Beyond that, again, 2D can NOT do anything 3D can. It can do basic things, but there's certain types of rendering that 2D literally cannot do. Like a realistic fire. Does Beastars have realistic fire? I doubt it. But that doesn't matter, because it still makes your statement false.
And beyond that, "the CGI sucks" does not explain, in any way, how the CG is actually bad. Do you just dislike cel-shaded rendering? Because I am willing to bet that's why you dislike it. Which is an EXTREMELY subjective stance. I can't think of anything in the animation that is objectively 'bad' or 'cheap,' or anything like that.
@Ty The Great Fair, doubt either of us would convince each other of anything anyways lol
As I said opinions on animation are.. pretty subjective. So not much we could do about this I guess
Simply put, we honestly have no idea how anthropomorphic animals would really move, so our brain accept this as quite possible. Thanks to this, "real" body language is through the roof. Also, i think the way how it stay true to manga + some improvements and ideas, is quite nice.
And ye, the beast mode is kinda, "artistic" i would say...
Weird. I never thought that Legoshi's instincts were anything other than just a visualization of his nervous system stimulating.
I think a lot of people who were slightly confused probably saw zootopia first where the premise doesn't include that carnivores actually crave meat. I personally had that issue and after a bit it resolved itself once I had a bit better understanding of the premise
Because it happens so early in the series, I see how some people can mistake it for something actually magical happening. It's at a point in the series where it's not established yet that magic doesn't exist in this universe.
i love how they mixed different kinds of art styles besides the 3D !! this is the first 3d anime i actually like! because *consistency*

Not gonna lie
I couldn't imagine Beastars to be in any other Artstyle once I watched the show
The 3D Artstyle fits Beastars so well
Honestly the 3d was so immersive that I didn't even realize that it switched between 3d and 2d sometimes until I saw this video.
I'm imagining Legosi's transformation into his instincts be like, a sudden black mist as he stares at his prey, it zooms in on his eyes, and then suddenly the Switch snap sound effect happens and his eyes instantly turn red, with a subtle yet noticeable black aura around him, panning out to show a shot of him staring down at his target.
But IDK, I thought I'd be the type of thing that'd make your heart drop a bit, I'd happen so fast but not to fast to where the viewer doesn't know what's going on. Sort of like a light switch, with an ominous look into the dark for a few seconds. Besides, I'd be easier to animate, meaning I'd cost less. I'll do a rough animatic of my idea once I have time.
Exactly like what i imagine, black aura is more familiar thing that resemblance shift of personality in anime.

Beastars and JoJo Openings: AM I A JOKE TO YOU?
@SaphiraSeraphina Yes
@SaphiraSeraphina ya sure? I mean theres also Kengan Ashura but i also think that it depends on the viewer.
I think it has a style that translates well to 3d mostly because they are animals. Traditional anime characters look off and i almost wanna say boring because its just big eyes nose and mouth with plain clothes. Or its detailed mechs and suits with a very plain looking character. So its just kinda jarring to see that change. Jojo could work in 3d and does pretty well in the games because of how detailed the characters are so the model doesn’t look stagnant.
I am one of those people. I got 3 episodes into Beastars and had to stop watching because the animation was driving me nuts. It’s not that it was badly done, it just doesn’t look quite right to me.

Provably going to be an unpopular opinion, but, while the 3D aspect gave Beastars its own style, it also made it way worse in regards to emotional expressions. Half of what was conveyed in manga was pretty much lost because overexaggeration didn't fit with the general aesthetics of 3D models. And mangaka really loves his goofy faces. me too 😂
I love the subtle stop of Haru and the slow movements of swiveling her ears forward mimics how rabbits do in the wild!
I think the 'Savage' instinct switch was purely stylistic. In a more recent episode, the same overtaking if instinct happens to Legosi, and it is in front of people. There is no reaction from them, and no questioning either. So, I assume it is purely representative. I did, however, think it was a bit much.
typical Magical Girl transformation shenanigans
me too. while reading the manga i've always imagined how it would be like if animated; highlighting the changes in Legosi's features (baring fangs, ears perked, etc.) would be enough for me
I've only watched the anime, but considering Legoshi's instincts play a significant role in the story, I'd say the nervous system and flare-up animations served well in showing said significance. However, if they were to improve it, I can agree to an extent, as they could've used body cues like muscles tensing and expression shifting instead of the signal animation. The red flare-up can still stay though, as without it his instincts wouldn't have been quite as heated or noticeable to the general audience even with help from different, more dramatic camera angles.
I believe that his instincts explosive energy shown in the anime was just enough, although I get where everyone's coming from, but in the anime the characters communications and actions were portrayed within there own minds majority of the time, leaving me to believe that the berserk scene was perfectly displayed in showing just how hard it was for him to suppress these dark sides of himself, and how it tore through him as he fought to keep his instincts at bay all from his point of view on the inside. And as we all know he purposely tries through out the season to seem weaker than what he really is knowing just how dangerous and monstrous he really can be. Which gets you to love the characters a little more knowing through text and visual content just how they struggle to want.
Lester Seale it was a stylistic choice in which I believed was actually really well done. His savage instinct burned throughout his body like fire in these cases and it served well to represent how overwhelming it is for legoshi. I appreciate the insight of this comment though, it’s opened up a new perspective:)

The rights to show it are only available to Netflix japan at the moment which sucks. Its probably gonna take a minute before the USA Netflix gets a hold of it.
Zamia Ramirez heh, I’m not even going to see it then. I got Nordic Netflix which kinda sucks
Not to expose myself but i turned to the dark side of crime to watch it lol
I love this art style so much. I thought it was weird at first but it really grew on me. It's one of my favorites, really only being topped by the art style in devilman crybaby. It looks so cool to me
Before i started watching beastars i was like “oh so its just animals having sex”
Now that im watching beastars im like “oh so its animals having sex but with a story line”
8:11 where in the ghetto. ARATATATA ARATATATAA-
One thing about the scene where Legosi's instincts suddenly take over (the "Lavagosi" scene): In the anime this transformation-like sequence plays and Legosi went full predator mode. And in the manga there was no sequence and Legosi was still able to soliloquise. He was slowly carried away and the panel you showed was just the moment where Haru began to run and his body started to move on its own. Not only gave the Lavagosi sequence the impression that he was controlled by something supernatural, it also changed the way predatory instincts work in the show.
Another and super obvious thing is just the line-count. Furred animals are just so work intensive. Remember the mandrill dorm mother who yelled at Legosi for breaking curfew? Her animation was horrible and this is what would happen if you tried to animate so work intensive characters. They would have had to change the art style to something more cartoony to make it easy to animate by hand. I'm so happy that Beastars was made in 3D, so we could keep this approach with a semi-realistic art style.
I think that "the Lavagosi scene" was unnecessary and still confusing. In the manga, Legoshi starts running towards Haru because she started running first, this is just a canine's instinct. In the anime, they did this styling and it felt like something supernatural, especially with him squirming.
Gladius_15 maybe that’s what the company wanted to convey to legosi’s persepective of what his relation to his primal instinct.
It's like with Eren vs the Female Titan in Attack on Titan.
In the Manga he just whupped her ass, he kept calm.
In the anime, he goes fucking berserk and, similar to Legosi's feral instincts taking over, had red, lava-like cracks.
Seems like just a way to make the scene 'cooler'.
I need to watch this series but Netflix is holding out on us.

I thought Beastars was an amazing character study and overall great show, I was hooked from the beginning
oh boy, it's not done
“You were looking at the left side of the screen... right?”
Me, With The ability to use Lazy Eyes: Yesn’t.
I don't know why, but I absolutely ADORE the split camera shots (or the parts where it tries to emulate the manga's pages). I've always loved these kinds of shots, being able to see two or more characters in completely different shots at a close up and all animated at once instead of awkwardly standing there is amazing. There is just so much emotion oozing from those scenes, even when they aren't meant to be tense. I can tell the animators had a passion for what they did, and they made it as good as they could (imo).
It’ll be fun seeing everyone’s reaction to finding out who his grandfather is.
Onlastar I had it spoiled by someone in a comment section of a review of beastars 😔🤚
Fobp I had it spoiled when I looked up how tall Legoshi was 🤣🤣🤣 (currently reading the manga and I was literally only a few chapters behind finding out)
Of all people it was my girlfriend who spoiled that for me, ofcourse this was right after she spoiled it for herself
JOHNY CASHGRAB welp at that point you just gotta throw the whole girlfriend away bro
Lmao yep
It's worth mentioning that the manga has more detail that implies a lot more about the characters, especially Louis in the content in the anime covered. The art style also gets significantly improved after not long and unfortunately some scenes were pretty scuffed in the anime as a result. Either way, it's a really good adaptation in the same way land of the lustrous was. Manga and anime both do their jobs very well and both are worth experiencing.
I hope the stuidio does some changes to louis' model
The reason I loved this anime was the variety of styles, 3D, 2D, 2D with watercolor style and the stop motion intro.
3:59 EXACTLY!! With everybody movement, expression, and gesture Legoshi makes will make the viewer fall more in love with him! Because of the amazing animation used to create impactful reactions, I have never seen anyone who didn't LOVE Legoshi!!!
it would be really to hard replicate the manga's artstyle in 2D anyway so i'm glad they went the CG route and did they're own thing that would make the series stand out a lot more.
Judging from the manga style and some of the 2D hand-drawn bit in the show, I'd say a 2D Beastars can be done properly by talented studios. It's not like it has the most complex art style ever, JoJo or Vinland Saga have even more complicate, detailed style yet were adapted wonderfully. Some sacrifice in details would have to be made, but it's not like the CG art style in Beastars is 100% accurate to the manga anyway.
We never see Beastars being done in 2D so of course the common reason people would use for Beastars being in CG is like what you said. But that just make me even more curious to see what it could have been if it was done entirely in 2D instead.
beastars was incredible ;v; I haven't stopped thinking about it since I caught up with the manga after finishing the anime
Same lol, I finished 173 chapters in one day ;-;
L e same 😔
I've watched the anime first and read the manga. I am really loving it, and I can't wait for season two to come out. Things are going to get REALLY intense. I really love how good the anime looks in 3D.
(SPOILER)
I cant wait till they animate Louie as the mafia boss, his character becomes 10x better and badass, plus the lions!!! I miss them.
Vainglorious Cadenza I’m hyped to see Melon animated
@@varghorder5806 Me too! Hes gonna be horrifying!(in a good way)
I'm really confused if the correct spelling is Legoshi or Legosi-
Legoshi
In Japanese, the old system of translating the "si" character into English was to spell it "si." In the Hepburn system, it is spelled "shi" because it actually sounds like "shi" when Japanese people say it, as in "Hiroshi," or "shimata."
@@wow-ww7pe
So are both correct or should the newer one be used?
My only issue is the seriously noticable frame rate difference between the 2d and 3d scenes. It's wonderful otherwise but that was distracting at times.
I really like this anime with the style as it is. It's one of the rare good 3D anime and it also have multiple styles showing giving off different feelings.
Thus making it unique.
The fact that the facial expressions and such not looking as goofy as in the manga is not really a problem too, because they make up for it in different ways.
It also makes me think of how we humans see animals. I mean, when we see animals, they don't really look like they're making certain emotions on their face most of the time, it's just how they look like. We know what our pets wanted because of the way they act, not by looking at their facial expressions...or at least I don't, so the animation is already showing lots of expressions I'd say.
You should also watch Houseki no kuni :)
Beastars is the second best example how to use CGI, only beaten by Berserk.
I hope you’re talking about the games of 2012 movies, not that visual abomination that was the 2016-17 series.

My friend hadn't watched Beastars up until a few weeks ago. I told them about it and they said they didn't want to watch a CG anime. I recommended that they poke at LotL then for preface, and as of today, they fully caught up on both LotL and Beastars + the current manga chapters.
Wait, this is 3D??? I just thought it was very well-done 2D!
i mean it’s quite noticeable
I'm not a furry, Legosi just has a relatable and caring personality(when he's normal and not committing murder)
He hasn’t commit murder tho

Great video! I'm not a big fan of CGI anime, but if it's made by Studio Orange then...they always make masterpieces, like Beastars or Houseki
Wasn't BeastStars supposed to be world wide in Jan
Netflix said "First thing 2020" so... yes most people assumed that meant January. Surprise! First thing means 3 months in.
Beastars is in jail from October to March, that is half a year

Yes, but It's shown in the show that he's not particularly strong, and he's even outright said that he's physically weak.
Real life size differences between animals aren't present in Beastars - except when they are. It's not very consistent.
@@ernovincze2900 Yeah it's definitely more based on story rather than biology.
I loved the detailed, flowing movements that made the characters appear real. Also you can feel the love and attention the creators put into the show flowing from every scene. They really tried to create something new and unique and you could really tell.
I really wanna see this series, so I'm going to wait for March to come around. I- do not have the best association with Netflix. (Tried to order a bunch of rental movies from them back in Aughts, say, 2008 or so. Movies never arrived and i got billed for the damn things.) So, when Beastars comes out globally, I will watch it with significant glee!
kissanime is an option. Just be sure to have your ad-blocker ready to go.
I h8ghot suggest reading the manga first imo since we still have to wait for season 2 to finally get to the murder solution arc along with the hybrid arc.
Oof i remember when they tried getting into that rental thing and it was when they were still a small company. They have pretty good customer service now
I think it should've been mentioned that scenes and characters on a first watch through, its hard to tell who is 3d and who is 2d. It blends that well at times. It was only through a second watch through, after hearing about this, that I did notice when it switched or combined.

I honestly didn’t even realize it was 3 D for the first five minutes of the first episode. 😂
Yeah me to 😆
Whenever the CG characters are on screen they seem to have some sort of invisible outline, that somehow makes the characters pop.
I prefer the anime simply because I'm not a huge fan of the manga's artstyle. That and because Studio Orange are incredible at CG. That reminds me...

I love the manga, but the anime was well down and definitely has its place. Orange Studio did amazing job at producing this show.
OH GOD, the red smell looks like hands grabbing at Legosi’s muzzle at minutes 8:39 to 8:44
I think that's the point
Those are literally hands. They're masked by the red aura but those are literal hands.
It was hard for me to determine whether they were supposed to be *metaphorical* hands or literally the guy's hands, but covered in the suffocatingly strong smell of wounded herbivore.
Beastars presenting the significant characters in CG and the background characters in 2D reminds me of how in Wreck-it Ralph, Ralph and Felix move smoothly while the other characters in Fix-it Felix Jr. move more limited.
The animation of the show also gives me heavy Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse vibes.
i was only really aware Beastars was 3D in the first, like, three minutes of episode 1. i didn't even realise someone of the minor characters were 2D until you mentioned it in this video. it was done so well and so seamless
I there are pros and cons of using 3D. If anyone is gonna do 3D I’m glad it’s Studio Orange, but I feel like the organic reactions that Paru Itagaki’s characters had in the manga were pulled back for the anime which is disappointing.
Nonetheless, I think this will ease the anime community about 3D anime being a good style for stories...even tho 2D is better imo
Something the anime does right: the Ghibli Shiver
Binged the entirety of beastars yesterday- I was honestly impressed and very intrigued- I am now reading the manga!
The textures on the CGI models blend really well with the 2D background characters to where I didn’t really notice upon first glance. Making everything look somewhat cell shaded really gives them legroom when it comes to hiding any budget cuts done on background characters.
I've read the whole manga and I have to agree, this story is so good in a 3D show. There are so many scenes I can't wait to see. I hope it gets a few more seasons, not just 1 more. I love the manga for sure, it has its own charms, but the anime is just breathtaking. I love the decisions they made with body language, especially getting to see the fur ruffle. I also love the decisions they made in the show to make sure the 3D isn't jarring. The slight choppiness, the effects like the stretch you mentioned on Legoshi, the way they did the shading and outline. I think the manga panel thing also helps with this, too. It is a strange decision, as you mentioned, but I think it totally works, personally. I think giving the shots kind of a manga vibe also helps with the goal of making the CG not jarring, since most of us are accustomed to 2D anime. I'm looking forward to the future of 3D anime tbh. I miss the artistry that anime used to have in 2D. There are some really good digital animations, don't get me wrong, but I think 80s hand drawn traditional stuff is so pretty. The 3D is also really pretty, at least from this studio, so I'm pretty excited. I'm glad we've finally reached this point in 3D anime.
1. 6:59 this part of the show reminds me of the part in Aot when eren goes crazy in his titan form

Beastars season 2 is really gonna shock people. I would recommend reading the manga, the story and character development is so good. One of my fav Manga’s of all time
Whenever I saw a thumbnail of this show I always thought it was in 2d it’s weird to see it now after thinking that
A big difference between 2D animation and 3D animation is that 3D is a mathematically perfect rendering between each frame and you can pick up on that subconsciously, its is limited by its own exact proportion, size, scale and movement due to it really just being a rotated and posed 3D model. With 2D animation, each frame is entirely different, you don't really notice how everything changes but you can tell its substantially different than a 3D image thats attempting to appear 3D. 2D is an organic animation where the impression of the artists lines go beyond the literal and mathematical lines that are supposed to be there. Basically 3D is accurate to a fault while 2D is inaccurate to the benefit of the art.
I AGREE COMPLETELY.
The way cg is used in beastars is PERFECT
In recent chapters they literally introduce jojo stands powered by racism

@@Motherlesstripod They do and it's pretty wack😂

Yep.
if the quality of 3D animes reaches the point of beastars, i would prefer 3D over 2D simply because it feels more atmospheric.
I want a stop motion episode or special 😊
I think one of the most beautiful shots that only would have worked in 3D was after Legoshi meets his friend at the bus stop and they discuss why they wouldn't eat the man's fingers.
The lights in the back and the reflection are so beautiful.
I read the entire manga in two nights after having watched the anime first, and I have to say, the show did GREAT! I'm not a manga reader, but I have to say that after having seen the adaptation first in color and life, it made it far easier to digest the manga, and Itagaki's art is especially delicate. It seems like something that would've been ruined in a 2D adaptation, as animators struggled to keep up the steam for such intricate lineart.
The fuck is your problem
