    No joke, your channel is up there in the top 5 channels for que quality of your tutorials, visuals and content 10/10, would be cool to see tutorials about design in houdini/cg or how to get cinematic renders

      Thanks a lot. I postponed many of such videos to make them with the H18 release, but current state of it is a bit on the crash-happy side. New nodes in SOPs give me crashes as well, so gotta be honest it's very hard to reliably record videos for now. Can't help but wait a bit more to dive deeper. But it's coming. It's happening. It is inevitable.

    Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but here's my twitter, so follow maybe? twitter.com/oossoonngg
    or instagram for that matter instagram.com/oossoonngg/
    Everything I will be saying and expressing on the topic is from a stand point of a very (extremely) small studio. Medium and larger studios will be benefiting much more from LOPs. Keep that in mind!
    Low on time? Here are some timestamps:
    0:35 - Info about Karma GPU and its implementation
    7:37 - H18 Karma Beta info and forum discussions

    Love your videos as always, but I did want to point out an inaccuracy in your recent one. Both Redshift and Octane do indeed have an OSX Metal version in development, with Octane probably beating Redshift to the punch with an expected Metal release quite possibly before the end of the year, and Redshift following likely in the Spring of 2020. I also disagree that RTX has an exclusive edge on AMD GPU's when it comes to real-time raytracing. AMD GPU's are capable of Rea-time raytracing as well. What Nvidia does have is a marketing advantage, as well as considerable goodwill from 3rd party developers. Having said that, much like yourself, I am eyeing UE as the next logical step. Now if they would only make the workflow more filmmaker friendly!

      The SideFX team is not planning to rewrite their engines for metal, be it Karma, or viewport. Possibly should have phrased it better.
      While AMD GPU is capable of realtime Ray tracing, it does not have hardware to speed the process up. RT GI will serve as a good example, reducing framerates to low single digits on cards without special hardware improvements (RT cores in case of nvidia for example).

      @@AriseWorks I'm not as worried about all of it. AMD isn't waiting around on the GPU front, so I'm sure they're formulating the way to catch up and even surpass Nvidia the way they are obliterating Intel. Regarding Karma, yeah, it's all quite puzzling honestly. I was expecting not only a slightly more robust version of it, but also one that wouldn't require one to go into LOPs to use it.

      Nvidia is the only option for serious gpu rendering, you only have pro render and you can't compare it to redshift, vray, arnold... with rtx acceleration.

    I mean, Solaris is more oriented toward mid/big studio, and one of the main purpose of it is to work entirely on USD, and to offer a deep and complex possibility for organization. I don't think comparing this to UE4 is logic. I think Solaris as a lot of potential, even in his current state. But I do share your feeling (from what I understand), that it was maybe released a bit too soon, and that Karma is too unstable (but, after all, it's in beta).

    • @AriseWorks
      @AriseWorks  4 роки тому +1

      You are correct, my comparisons mostly lack context, which I usually skip not to bore everyone to death. Hopefully my pinned comment and description with note that these thoughts are not about medium and big studios will help.

    • @biiiiioshock
      @biiiiioshock 4 роки тому

      I do think even small studio or solo artist can benefit from USD. I personally work by myself and I like to be organised, so I can clearly see the appeal in it, but yes, I can understand that Solaris is not really, at least in it's current state, useful for some !

      @@biiiiioshock I´m totally optimistic about Solaris on the mid/long-term even for freelancers like me, and, given time, it will be a much better, and houdini-style solution than what we have now... we have to look at what is happening these days as SideFX planting a seed, painfully frustating at first, but with generous fruits on the long term. They are being ambicious and that´s really good for costumers

    It would be cool to see tutorial for houdini to UE4 rendering. For me Karma is fast in viewport, but rendering is very slow, slower than Mantra.

  • @NabilJabour
    @NabilJabour 4 роки тому

    Solaris is like an USD-Maker. I love it for that. But yeah, Karma is very unstable and not as fast as I thought it'd be. Will definitely test Renderman 23 tonight 👍

    you said you are going to use UE4 for final pixel renders, can you please make a video showing UE4 vs render you used before? I'm just curious and I think other people would find it interesting to see too

    • @AriseWorks
      @AriseWorks  4 роки тому

      Whichever tradeoff appears it gets compensated by a rendering speedup roughly anywhere from 1000x speedup, and more. I am still working on making this a robust replacement.
      Things that need (much) more work/rnd - RBD to maps, volumes, and Houdini>Niagara workflows. Also those comparison vids will take an enormous amount of time to make them proper, admittedly I don't think I am currently in a position of affording such time investment (yet).
      To get a rough estimation of how it is different (if it is), compare:
      "Proteus" by Floating House
      against
      "Rebirth" by Quixel
      a couple of notes: they both feature similarities in the pacing/story/shots (I'd wager Rebirth was highly inspired by Proteus); Proteus extensively used compositing/matte painting; there was no RT tech in Rebith and pixels are "final" out of the engine.

      @@AriseWorks I've heard that redshift is making realtime rendering for redshift, should be similar or better than ue4

    • @AriseWorks
      @AriseWorks  4 роки тому

      I read their forums, there have been posts about it, but it's not ready at all, and no one gives ETA when it will be ready. As per similar or better, our definition of "better" can be subjective, and different.

    After the Karma fiasco, I´m testing Renderman 23... Solaris implementations is not 100% complete yet, there are limitations, but at least the render engine is complete and mature outside of Solaris... I don´t think you would like either because of the lack or more advanced shading nodes compared to Mantra, but rendering performance is... just awesome, sometimes it looks like a GPU renderer.

    • @AriseWorks

      I was reading about prman23 today myself. It's interesting to play with, I remember giving previous versions a go, they were pretty satisfying to use.
      For now unparalleled speed+feature set is Redshift in my personal experience in offline renders.

      @@biiiiioshock and the performance of the entire Solaris context is really promising in spite of the bugs and half-baked things. People with more knowledge than me have already expressed it will easily rival Clarisse for large scale environment creation... (and that's not easy)

    • @biiiiioshock
      @biiiiioshock 4 роки тому +1

      @@jessarc6715 Yeah, Clarisse does have amazing performance, it's fantastic to work with. I hope that Solaris will be as "dynamic" as Clarisse in the future. Having everything (well, almost) in one package is truly amazing.
