In this video I turn a wood mallet out of Ash and curly maple burl. I break down the wood and then stabilize the pieces to be used for the head in resin. I then bore out a hole in each half to accept a 1 inch oak dowel that will align and strengthen the joint between the two halves. I used Total Boat 2:1 High performance resin to glue the two halves together. I then used Woodpecker Ultrashear Tools to turn to the desired shape. I keep in mind the size of the handle and the width of my own hand. This makes for a very comfy and custom fit handle. Stabilizing the head makes it much stronger and heavier. This mallet should last a long time and be more effective when hitting a chisel or carving gouge. Be sure to check the links below if you'd like to support me and my sponsors.

What mfr/type resin did you use for stabilizing? How long did it soak in the stabilizing resin? How long did you cook it? Does the stabilizing achieve a hardness sufficient for the force it will get on a small mallet like this?

First! Lol. How soft or punky was that burl before stabilizing it?

@@CunninghamWoodWorkhave you ever worked with or try to stabilize boxwood? That stuff can get really really soft

I'm still new to wood working and I dont know why you cook it, can you explain please

    • @jeffreyharris3440

Short answer: The wood he is using is very soft, and would be very quickly damaged if he were to ever use this as an actual mallet. He is cooking in stabilizer.
Long answer: Burls off of trees are kind of like a tumor. They are some sort of a reaction to an infection, and although the wood grain is really pretty, they are very soft. Even turning the burl on the lathe might tear it up.
So he soaked the burl octogons in a stabilizer, most likely the brand "Cactus Juice". Sometimes people put the burls or other soft wood in under a vacuum so that the stabilizer is able to penetrate all the micro cracks and crevices.
The cactus juice stabilizer crystalizes when it is baked. at 250(?) degrees. Now it can be turned and is most likely very hard. I don't know why they wood use a burl for a mallet, but to each his own.

That’s exactly it. The wood has some sponges spots and overall the stabilizing makes the mallet head stronger. And I used maple Pluto because it’s so good looking.
