  • Let's take a POV road trip to Narrows, Virginia! We'll start on US Route 460 at the West Virginia/Virginia state line, and travel east. We'll drive along the New River as we pass Rich Creek, VA, briefly skirt past Narrows, Va, and then exit Route 460 where we U-Turn back west and travel through the heart of Narrows, Virginia.
    HISTORY OF NARROWS, VA
Narrows, VA was founded in 1778, 30 years after Pennsylvanians arrived in Giles County through the Great Wagon Trail. French, McKensey, Hale, and the Hare families founded Narrows.
They all moved near the confluence of Wolf Creek and the New River for river traffic. The Hale family, one of the wealthiest founding families, held most of southern Narrows. The Hale family still has 1793 land grants.
During the Civil War, Confederate forces defended the Dublin-Bristol rail route against Union saboteurs at Narrows. Tannery Hill gave Confederate troops a three-way vantage point.
Narrows flourished during Reconstruction. First U.S. Post Office opened in 1873, connecting Dublin and White Sulphur Springs. During that period, the post office's name was considered "Intermont."
Reconstruction's economic boom helped Narrows serve its citizens. The Union Tanning Company was the largest local employer. After the Town's water company was formed in the 1920s, it took over firefighting. Small fire houses were built in Narrows to employ the newly installed equipment and the first volunteer fire company was created.
The Norfolk and Western railroad was built in the 1880s, boosting Giles County and Narrows. In 1881, Narrows had a flour mill, a doctor's office, and a general merchant. Mid-1880s railroad connection led to two sawmills.
Before US-460 was built, US-100 was the main road to West Virginia. Route 100 curled through downtown, affording drivers diverse views of the town and landscape. Unfortunately, when US Route 460 was built, it reduced downtown traffic flow, hurting retail and services. Until the mid-1990s, when an enterprise zone was created, downtown altered little.
There are a few specific goals of Travel Towner:
    1. To take fun POV (“Point-of-View”) videos of scenic drives, highways, and roadways so you can virtually travel anywhere you like; or look back at a time when you were younger.
    2. Document a fun walking tour of a specific park, attraction, or point of interest so you can see what's it's like to really be there.
    3. Showcase vintage footage from yesteryear to show today's viewers what is may have been like back in 19- something something! If you have any vintage footage of past attractions, parks, road trips or anything interesting from the USA? Contact me and let’s feature it here!
    4. Just for Fun. These are videos that are funny or interesting in some way that I think everyone will enjoy!
Please give a "thumbs up" if you like taking a POV Road Trip or love POV driving.
Want to get in on the fun and make cool videos too? Here is everything I use to make it happen:
(Please note I may make a commission as an Amazon Associate if you purchase- thank you for supporting this channel!):

Another big part of the channel is to document a piece of Americana… at a certain point in time. Wouldn’t it be cool to go back to where you lived, 20 or 30 years ago, and take a ride through your hometown? As more roadway drives, walking tours, and vintage trips are added, it builds history so future viewers can go “back in time” and see what it was like, back then.
Roadtripping and traveling are uniquely American pastimes- and we should preserve it’s history- so future generations can appreciate the Freedom of the Road.

THANK you for this video! Lived there until 2006, May 2013 was the last time I was back. I miss Narrows more than most anywhere. I was actually West of Narrows, through downtown an up on Piney Mountain Road.

I like the labels of streets/roads, too! Did you camera do it automatically or what do you have as an editing program to add it?
