🇩🇪 Am 3. Juli 2022 jährt sich Corneilles Geburtstag zum 100. Mal - für uns ein Anlass, das Werk und die Bedeutung des holländischen Malers zu würdigen und ihm eine Ausstellung zu widmen, die ihn im Rahmen seiner Künstlerfreunde der CoBrA-Gruppe zeigt. Durch die gegenseitige Inspiration in der Gruppe CoBrA, die Corneille 1948 zusammen mit Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Christian Dotremont und anderen jungen Künstlern gründet, entstehen frühe Werke, die von einer starken Aufbruchstimmung in der Nachkriegszeit und einer überaus hohen Experimentierfreude zeugen. Nach der Auflösung von CoBrA 1951 geht Corneille schnell eigene Wege und entwickelt seine individuelle Formensprache, die anfänglich zur Abstraktion tendiert, letztendlich jedoch immer darstellend bleibt. Durch Reisen durch nach Mittel- und Südamerika, China, Indien, Japan und immer wieder Afrika inspiriert, entwickelt der Künstler eine ausgeprägte Formensprache, die intersubjektiv, sensuell wahrnehmbar und universal in ihrer Symbolik in jeder Kultur verstanden und gelesen werden kann und dem Betrachter unterschiedliche Bedeutungsebenen offerieren. Gemeinsame Ideen, vor allem aber auch enorme Unterschiede in der künstlerischen Auffassung werden in der Gegenüberstellung von Corneilles Werken mit denen seiner Künstlerfreunde deutlich.
🇬🇧 July 3rd 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of Corneille's birth - an occasion for us to honour the work and significance of the Dutch painter by dedicating him an exhibition that presents him among his artist friends of the CoBrA group. Through the mutual inspiration in the CoBrA group, which Corneille founded in 1948 together with Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Christian Dotremont and other young artists, early works emerged that bear witness to a strong spirit of optimism in the post-war period and an extremely high level of joy in experimentation. After the dissolution of CoBrA in 1951, Corneille quickly went his own way and developed his individual formal language, which initially tended towards abstraction but ultimately always remained representational. Inspired by journeys to Central and South America, China, India, Japan and, again and again, Africa, the artist developed a distinctive formal language that was intersubjective, sensually perceptible and universal in its symbolism, which could be understood and read in every culture and offered the viewer various levels of meaning. Common ideas, as well as enormous differences in artistic conception, become clear in the juxtaposition of Corneille's works with those of his artist friends.
