Girl! You are such an inspiration. I have only been running for a year and a pace I could easily do for 10 kilometers was 5:10 per kilometer. I had an injury and I wasn't able to run for about a month and a half. When I started again I almost "died" running a warm up at a 7:44 min per kilometer ( I was scared of running again ) Being injured was mentally hard and coming back is even harder, we just have to trust the process. A week ago I raced a 10km at a 5:27 min pace and felt great, not too hard but not too easy. Now that I look back, I'm just thankful that I kept showing up
"Bizarre" was the exact word that resonated with me, when restarting running after Covid. Health wise I felt fine, running felt relatively normal and nothing in how I felt suggested I shouldn't run. It was just like my paces related to effort and heart rate had been completely re-calibrated. Overnight my Easy pace was now a tempo effort, my tempo pace was now a threshold effort, and my faster pace was a pipe dream. I even started to question my watch :) I found it all frustrating. Bearing in mind I am 50 year old (very average) recreational runner, so it matters not one jot to anyone if I can manage a 19 min 5k or a 25 min. So I really sympathise with an Elite like yourself where there is pressure and it is important. I truly hope it all realigns for you quickly :)
Great video Phily, nice to see you loving the grind in that second workout (a mantra I've definitely stolen from you for my own workouts recently!). I love how casually you talk about tempo being a 5:30 pace - my current 1 mile PB is 5:40 so I have a long way to go. Hope you have an excellent holiday in Greece!
She’s BACK!!!🙌🙌🙌🙌…& enjoying the grind..whoop whoop!! I often have to remind myself not to base progress (or a seemingly lack of) on 1 run, especially when getting back after injury/illness-so I can totally relate! Have an awesome holiday!!
Picking blackberries, "Rocky 3ish" music, UK street scenes. Took me back to walking between towns in N Yorkshire back in the day! Great vid, timely, as my wife and I are down with Covid now. Not fun... But, "Happy Holiday-ing!!"
Don't get discouraged Phily, I wanted to cry after my first tempo session back from covid, specially since I did my best track session of the year the day I got covid, it was frustrating to see all that goneI. But your first covid video helped me a lot and my fitness is back now. It took a couple - three weeks to get the body comfortable running fast again. Bizarre feeling for sure, but you will get it back in not time. ;)
Sounds like you are making a solid comeback Philly. The first few weeks post covid my energy levels were way down. My 5K time was also very disappointing. I am about twice as old as you (I figure) and nowhere near your fitness but it took me a solid month to get back to where I felt like my fitness was "back". It's tough but be patient with yourself. Enjoyed the video and enjoy your vacation.
i love this channel! keep the good work, im sure in the future you will get the at least 100k subs you deserve also, in the q&a video, it'd be imo better to add a screenshot of the question just for visuals and because I (and im sure a few more people) dont speak english fluently and sometimes couldnt understand the question
This was SO good!! loved this, your honesty, and adored when you said, “awe sad Tues Phily”. I’m currently recovering from a minor injury and definitely relate to this. ❤️ good job guys!
Wow! I said Phily just said 6:15 is slow that is my PB for a mile but then I am not an elite Athlete like you Phily 👍Hope you are both having a great holiday 🏖😎
I just realised.. 5:23 interval on the road… amazing 🤩 I know Allie Ostrander knocks out 5:30s on her track sessions and similar on the roads, so you are in illustrious company with those times 👏
10 days after my + COVID test my Resting Heart Rate was up by 12 & my VO2/Max was down by 10 (according to my Garmin). I had to only work out by heart rate for about a month after my all clear.
There’s a recent study into the effects of covid and I vaguely remember something about it starving your mitochondria of oxygen. So you can be full of o2 and breathing fine but have no power. I’ve heard a lot of people describe it as being fatigued without being tired.
That's exactly what I've felt. After covid got out for an easy run. Body felt surprisingly well, ran for an hour. Although I was feeling like Z1 at most lower Z2, my hr was upper Z4. The moment I stop I started to feel devastated.
I felt the exact same getting back to running after covid my HR just shot up going very easy pace and chest was super tight but body felt fine before and after lasted about 4-5 weeks
@@vlkngulen Same here, body felt great, legs rested and fresh after a week off but the aerobic system felt all messed up. I am back 100% now. Running on feeling like Phily said is the best, next time I won't even bother wearing my watch for a few weeks.
Post COVID was such a weird one sports wise for me; I was cycling on the turbo trainer on day 3 of testing positive and it was fine, cycled all the way through until testing negative, then went back running - my only issue was when I tried to push the effort, my muscles would act fatigued and my chest was tight, but totally not fatigued. My HR was spiking in ridiculous time, so I think it was all about the oxygen transport round the body.
good work Phily ! I have to do 5x5 intervals tomorrow. I haven't run intervals in a very long time. I totally get the fear that you forget "how to run faster than slow" in training...
Phily being upset during / after the first session is obviously hard to see, but contrasting it with her rainbow fingernails DID make me smile a little 😁Sweet score on the roadside blackberry bush though, I'm envious! By the way, as always, ace filming by Daniel while riding a bike - I've never tried to do that, but I suspect it isn't easy 🤔 Watching session 2, I'll say this - I know that's what my own interval sessions *feel* like, but I don't think they quite look the same! Thanks as always for the video and the inspiration, you two, and have a great holiday!
I was poorly around 6 weeks ago, for about 2 weeks. Negative Covid tests but felt awful. For 3 weeks after feeling better my runs felt hideous. Hardly out of breath, HR ok and clearly in decent shape, just no energy and felt completely wiped out. Trying to do anything near tempo (Around 6:20 pace) was horrible. Only in the last 10 days or so have I felt approaching normal again but feel like I lost about 5 weeks of training which is a bit of a disaster with my goal HM in 3 weeks time.
Hi Phily, love the channel! I really enjoyed your video where you talked about your goals for the track season. Would love to know how you reflect upon the track season, and what your targets are for the winter!
I got covid lasy week and i feel so weak😂 I’m so grateful for this content, it’ll be easier to get back and being less judgmental after seeing you (obviously great runner) struggle
what's the 80s style montage song in the middle?? its awesome. I also had covid 2 years ago and it took me a good few months to feel normal, sucks but the only thing that helped was accepting it and easing back in slowly
I had Covid-19. Only found out that I had it because of a test. No symptoms. Had several colds and fevers during my lifetime that were 100x worse. Maybe I developed natural immunity. Prior to the 2020 lockdown, I entered a 5k and did 22 and alot of change. Won my age group (55-59). During lockdown, didn't train except for running in place during isolation. Could have been much needed rest. Coming back slowly working slowly back up to 5ks. Train for longer races based on what my 5ks are. Enjoy your videos.
Illness or injury is horrible, I just love running, stubbed big toe 6 weeks ago and I’m still not running, getting 2nd opinion on the problem, it still hurts I can hardly walk 😔 good luck Phily 🏃♀️👍
Was the 80’s music a nod to Stranger Things? And is it a coincidence you’ve gone on holiday while the festival is on? 😅. Great vid and glad you’re rapido again!
Hey I know how hard it is- now I’m no professional so I run at a 8.30- 9 min mile pace (up to 10.45 pace for a marathon) anyway after I had covid I literally could barely run an 11 minute mile. I had no energy no speed and could barely breathe. Horrid and really demotivating. It’s taken me months to get back to normal but you’re elite so you’ll be back to normal in no time!!! Keep going girl!!!! You’re amazing ❤️👏🏻🏃🏻♀️ Also btw if I did a 6 minute mile I would genuinely think I’m an Olympian, it’s my absolute dream to even do an 8 minute mile!
Thank you for this, I am now feeling like I'm getting somewhere! I think others have definitely had it worse than me so remembering to be thankful for that. Thanks for the support on the channel as well, really appreciate it!
Phily, I have entered a Marathon this coming October mainly because I'd like to do one as a 60 year old and although played with the pain 12 or so times it would at least mean (should I finish of course) I managed to do one every ten years since that 2nd London back in 83 ?. On YouTubing Seville as options, you're Marathon popped up so I watched it again, or is that for the fourth time, Any way, you have sold it to me. Okay so I'm not going to get anywhere near the good club runner times of the past but it would be nice to see how close to 3 hours we can get and that's not going to happen in Yorkshire in the cold and rain!!. The official Seville entry form kind of finishes with terms & conditions in Spanish and three options , do I Yes Yes Yes and agree to the unknown or just tick A and hope for the best. If one of the runners that you coach in the future has the same problem how might you be able to advise. Ian
When I first came back from Covid I felt totally fine on easy runs but shocking at any decent pace, but don’t worry it went away pretty quickly in my case!
Hi Philly when you run you kick you heel up when you run. Is that something that comes naturally with speed or is it something you learn when training?
I got the first covid wave in December 2020 and got parasomia, for 2 years ive not been able to eat anything as everything tastes rotten, mental health is shot and ive got fat as the limited food I can stomach is fattening , covid can REALLY ruin you, luckily this wave seems to just be a flu that will fade after a month but stay safe. People make like of covid but it can be life changing
Hi, I hope this helps you. I had covid in April. I have been a long distance runner for 30yrs. After covid, my body refused to work. My runs were slow and hard. My 5min km pace was long gone, or so it felt. Some time I would get 200 metres in to a ten k run and nope, had to come home. and my legs were so heavy. 4 months later... I am back! To where I was... but still taking more rest days than I was, but I do have my speed back. The other thing that happened to me, was, my doctor thought I had 'long covid' I just wasnt ok or getting better. Turns out the covid stopped my thyroid from working and my pituratry gland over active. Im on meds now and 2 months later after taking the med, I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. I did think, my running was over!!! But im back.... couple more months I should be good. Most runners I know, say about 3 months to get most of the fitness and strength back and not needed days of recovery in between training sessions.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this.. things are slowly improving but I wasn't prepared for it to be so hard! I hope you're now smashing your running since you've been feeling better!
@@PhilyBowden After 3 months I was back to mostly running and times etc. But then I got the new varient of Covid, the BA 5. I was sick for a month. I got pneumonia really badly. Never had that before in my life, and my oxygen sats kept dropping below 89 percent. I was in hospital! OMG! So Im starting again.... AGAIN! While I was sick this time, my body felt like I was running a 15km race everyday. Was scary and crazy. Yesterday I did 2km run. But really only my bike at the moment to regain strength. And walking. The air is really cold here at the mo, so is not helping me get back running. This time around I know what to expect in re training. My heart hates it at the moment. :-( Also this time, I let my body recover more. So I can get back quicker... maybe
