I believe the reason the survivors keep helping the worst parties is because they're desperate. They've most likely have been in this word for thousands of days, barely holding on, that any chance of perhaps breaking this world will either 1) glitch them out of the constant or 2) kill them off forever so they don't have to deal with the pain anymore. It's a dark theory, but if I was one of the survivors having to deal with this torture on a daily basis, you really don't have anything to lose anymore except finally going home.

    • @loap4634
      @loap4634 2 роки тому +207

Or because they just don't know and just accidentally help the worst party,
I mean the ancient fuelweaver is trying to kill them so, of course, they will fight it
and they don't know Wagstaff's intention he seems just like a jolly old man and one of the survivors is Wagstaff's employee so of course, they will help him.
Also, they don't seem that desperate some of them even look happy
and they probably didn't die that often after the vanilla Don't starve.

I personally believe that the constant isn't that bad I mean if the Pig, Merm, And the Bunnymen can live in it
Then humans can probably live in it too, I mean it got a lot of beautiful fauna and flora, they got plenty of food, interesting terrain from the forest to the cave and beyond the coastal sea.
there is even an island perfect for a vacation with a lot of friendly locals to help, you only die if you stupid, there all year round rain, giant corp and a lot of local holidays
yes, you may go insane but it's almost impossible to do if you know what you're doing, also there got like 18 people so it's not that hard to survive.

15:38 I do believe Wagstaff is not actually in the constant at all, as in one of Hamlet's patch notes, it describes Wagstaff as a "mysterious inventor who finds himself exactly where he wants to be." Furthermore, in Hamlet when Wagstaff takes damage he gets grainier, and his voice gets quieter and lower pitched. Also, Wagstaff is playable in don't starve, and since he wakes up on the ground rather then coming through the portal, this means that Wagstaff traveled between different constants completely by himself without the help of an fancy ancient gateway or Florid Postern, which is impossible, right? UNLESS he was never actually in the constant to begin with. Not only that, but when he takes damage in the original don't starve, he also gets grainier and his voice get quieter and lower pitched. I think that proves that Wagstaff was never really in the constant. Therefore, it was probably just a plot-hole.

Wanda also has a quote about the atrium thulecite statues, implying they are the bodies of the ancients, "A frozen moment in ancient history." So perhaps the statues are what is left of their bodies, or what happened to the moon-worshiping ancients. Interestingly, the "random boss in the corner", the Ancient Guardian, resembles both the clockwork Rook and the crawling horror. And Maxwell calls it "old friend", implying it is or at least used to be intelligent. Perhaps the ancient guardian's species lived alongside the bug-looking guys, or is an even older species.
Also, Wagstaff isn't necessarily the one being pulled in during Winona's short. And with Wanda here...time travel is an option. Especially since she seems to have met Wilson, Willow, and Maxwell before.

@@orangedontstarve Fair question and I can only speculate, perhaps he didn't want his work slowed down by the legal issues of people "dying" in his factory's fire and went to work in some secondary lab. The influence of Them is known for making people obsessive and insane, so he could just be hiding away. I think the fact that the person disappearing's face was not shown and the fact that Winona's compendium also calls the person "someone" would be really lame and poor story-telling if they were just red herrings. I think and hope Klei's better than that.

It seems the person sucked in is a worker: same white blouse, same yellow gloves. I don’t think it was Wagstaff, it just doesn’t fit, outfit wise. Plus, the fact that we see Wagstaff giving Webber’s dad a Constant spider, I think that hints at him being able to go back and forth, or in the very least, he’s able to grab objects and take them, like a spider egg or something. Edit: I watched Orange’s latest theory video… and I’m still unsure. Why would a hologram be sucked into the portal, why would the hologram even be there, I don’t get it

At one point we change the subject to medicine, the modern medicine doesnt require a specific stage of the moon to consume, but the tradional medicine does, and they said it is waning moon, while we were talking about that my great granmother told us to never use tradicional medicine in new moon, i was curious and asked her why, she answered something like "os vermes se revoltam e sobem" (the worms revolt and rise, literally google translation, no ideia how to express this in english) i think klei just implemented a mysticism that exist in real life in the game. The shadow bosses will remain under ground until they can "revolt" and come to surface, where they will posses their respective statues.

Very interesting, once again, well done. Informative, and entertaining!
I must say though, the fact that these portals lead to very different areas could mean a number of things.
Perhaps the constant is more than just a planet or plain of existence.
This could be a collection of varying dimensions(something of that sort), or at least, some areas are.
Seeing the shorts on Hamlet and Shipwrecked, it's clear that those two areas are connected in some way to the main area(s).
However, it could be possible that other places like the Gorge, Forge, and worlds from solo like in the final area with the nightmare throne are some sort of pocket realm, perhaps existing in different times too.
I'd go into more depth, but this is a UA-cam comment section.
All in all, good stuff. Looking forward to more content too!

    Some corrections and my thoughts
-Metheus didn't create the Clockworks, you call the tech he creates 'Clockworks' but the clockworks were created by Maxwell.
-I kinda think that the Nightmare Creatures aren't the Ancients. I personally think that the darkness that ruined their civilization and the things that came out of the portal they had to close were the Nightmare Creatures. Also the Ancients are very clearly bug people and assumedly have insect anatomy, hence why they didn't leave behind any bones because...well insects don't _have_ bones. I could also see that the whole 'Shed their skins' was them adapting to underground life. But this is just me theorizing
-I wouldn't say the survivors are stupid, more just that they're kind of used to this shit by now. Like they know they're basically trapped in hell and that death has no meaning. It is literally the game's endless nature as a part of the lore. Same reason why they help any random person they see, even if they're very sus. Like they accepted Maxwell into their group and that old codger brought them there, if I were in their position I'd help anybody if it meant I had the tiniest sliver of a chance at freedom.
-Its actually a big theory that Wagstaff was never in the Constant to begin with. As when he loses more and more health he sounds more faded like he's just one big hologram. Plus he just straight up vanishes from the Nightmare Throne if you beat Adventure mode as him and then replay it with another character, and the only real way he'd be able to do that is if he was never really in the Constant to begin with.
-I highly doubt the moon is 'dead'. As the boss you fight is just the moon's 'champion'. Plus Klei hasn't really made a gameplay change that isn't directly tied to the story and vice versa.
-Your theory on Wurt succumbing to what is basically dementia is something I never thought about and its also super fucking depressing. Like as somebody who had a family member with dementia it's haunting to be around them as they forget everything about themselves.

my theory about wagstaff is this: wagstaff has discovered how to use holograms to manipulate them physically, and he has traveled several holograms to the constant to get some of it's resources like the spider from the constant that made that young kid what we now know as webber, but then when the winona's video shows up, we can see wagstaff being taken to the constant, meaning that wagstaff's technology won't help him gathering resources from the constant to the normal world, but i guess wagstaff uses his holograms because he isn't sure if he can get back from the dead like the other survivors, so he decides to use of his creations to bring him some projects resources or just stuff for keeping him alive.

Something I think wasn't considered at 3:55 . Darkness is the absence of light, eg. a shadow. The shadow creature on the right is a literal shadow of the ancient that the statue is based on. Just like how when you make a shadow puppet, things can be easily twisted. It's also why the little light creatures can easily kill them. How do you get rid of a shadow? Expose it to light of course. But the trick is, since it's a "special" kind of darkness (maybe like the darkness shown in the ancient murals?) it needs a special kind of light. Also the Ancient Fuelweaver is DEFINITELY the same skeleton at 1:34 maybe it's some kind of guardian? I think Charlie/them and Alter are sort of in some stalemate. Light and darkness are trying to overpower each other and the Constant is their arena.

In my opinion, Wagstaff did fell into the constant (willingly, as he built the portal itself, and it's not a machine looking like the portal created by Wilson under the influence of Maxwell to get into the constant. He may be here with a purpose. We know that he's assistant went into the constant looking for secret knowledge and power in here (WX), possibly lured here by Maxwell. So he could have spent he's time looking for definitive solution to stop "Them". Getting in, and capture the power of the light into a huge Mecha Gundam style to fight the incarnation of the shadow is freaking cool in my opinion.
The players cannot meet it directly, only see it's hologram, because he already went into the next dimension (through the moon portal that has no use for now, maybe, where he could plan its actions and research for a way to get the power of freeing the constant and possibly his ex-assistant and friend.

Honestly this section sums up why I tragically dislike don't starve. I want to like it, I really do- but the game first goes out of its way to tell you not to fight things, because it won't end well. The controls don't make it an attractive option, your stats are always pathetic, all your weapons require something you've never seen from somewhere that you've never been, and combat is essential to survival, to completing the game. Everything is needlessly convoluted, the game goes out of its way to not tell you what's happening, what to do- which kinda sucks when I achieve subsistence farming on a heavily modified world and then get bored because I can't fight anything and I don't have anywhere to go but slightly more efficient and secure subsistence farming.
When games try to teach you things; they do it by showing you the results of your natural experimentation, good ones do at least. Don't starve shows you that everything you do ends poorly.
If don't starve were a story, I'd be head over heels, but it's the cruelest game I've ever seen, and I've no desire to go back.

There's a line between "No hand-holding here! You gotta go out and explore! Learn about this fascinating world and the game as you play through it! It makes playing the game more satisfying and fun, see?" and "Because of how little we tell you and how much trial and error you need to go through to nail down a basic understanding of a certain element of this game, you will spend most of the time playing either having no idea what to do, or making zero progress towards (insert end goal here)".
Don't Starve dances on that line WAY too much, and unfortunately, it falls onto the worse side more than it should. That's not saying that DS never hits the good side with the "don't tell them much" design idea (it does actually do it a fair amount, and it's great when it works, so I think that saying "everything you do ends poorly" is exaggerating it a little bit) or that it falls onto the worse side more than it does the good, it's just that you'll run into that kind of problem more times and for a longer period of time than what most would consider "acceptable" in a game, for a lack of better words.
Usually a game's wiki or community should just be a quick, easy, and optional way to gain an understanding of something in said game if I don't want to bother checking it out for myself, not the only reasonable way. Sure, I could waste hours and hours and hours and hours and hours of my life trying to figure out how Deerclops works or where all of the cool content of the game is, but that's not reasonable in the slightest.
In situations like that, the only way you could not want to drop the game is to have prior knowledge, or to jump into the community and look at all the details they've bundled up about this particular element of the game that you would've spent hours not enjoying trying to figure it out for yourself.
If it wasn't for that, more people would be getting into Don't Starve, and a LOT more people would be STAYING in Don't Starve. If you take the occasional peek at the game's wiki or decide to go on a reading spree about everything in the game, then you'll be able to get over Don't Starve's biggest obstacle, and then actually start playing (and enjoying!) the game. At that point the only thing stopping you is the game itself just being difficult in the form of resource management, combat (which actually has its own issues too), planning, ect.
I REALLY hope Klei is able to do something about this for DST, because not only does it turn away many players from the rest of the game, but the need of having to constantly open up the wiki is not only boring and unfun itself, but it also takes away from the satisfaction of figuring things out yourself. A middle-ground between "not easy to the point that everything is directly handed to me", and "not hard to the point where I'd spend hours figuring a single thing out for myself".
Any time I recommend DST to anyone, it always comes with the warning that they should always check the wiki if they get stumped on anything. I want to have to stop doing that.

I personally have theory of Wagstaff being trapped in Maxwell's constant while everyone else is in Charlie's version of the constant, this could also be applicable for all the other Hamlet and shipwrecked characters not in dont starve together yet

I prefer to believe Wagstaff really only borrowed the moon's light for a day before giving it back. He just needed to run a few experiments, he didn't care for endless power or anything, was just messing around for a little bit.

About the Wurt theory killing everyone... in all the animations shes shown as living far away from the survivors, so I doubt that she's even allied with the survivors.

I would normally put the blame on Charlie for the DST story but it's probably the Constant's or the throne's fault for all of this to happen. I don't think Charlie instantly agreed to become the shadow monster and I think it took quite a while for the Constant and *Them* to fully corrupt her mind, making her accept her position as the shadow monster.

Whatever the finale is, in DST chess is a recurring theme. And the players, we are the pawns.
Charlie is the queen (or rather the king). Who’s on the other side of the board, and is either party up to any good?
(Alas Charlie’s innocence is long gone a dead)

On a more upbeat theory, it is also possible that Wurt will not continue to progress into full Mermhood, simply because she's no longer near the Gnaw, and may no longer be under it's influence.
Mostly I just wanna believe that cause Wurt's just so gosh darn cute and I'd hate to see her progress into a Merm.
