Thank you so much for watching everyone. There is something I wanted to address regarding my video. You can always experience struggle or low points in life no matter what your financials are like. I agree with those pointing this out to me in the comments of the video. You are absolutely correct. I included in my title of the video that the viral post that went around a few years back was "made up" (literally has no source), but because I chose to say the word "false" in reference to the quote in the viral post, and not specify that the viral post itself was made-up, I unintentionally suggested that rich people don't have low points in life and don't struggle. I apologize to everyone for making that mistake and hurting a lot of viewers in the process. Depression affects everyone regardless of status. Regarding the viral-post, Takeuchi has never said "I was at a low place, so I wrote about girls I wish were my friends" in any interviews and goes against the story of how Sailor Moon came to be in the first place. The purpose of my video was to debunk that made-up viral post. While it was wholesome, it was completely different from what actually happened behind the scenes. I wanted to tell the story of how Sailor Moon was actually created backed with credible sources (links included in my video description) that include interviews with Takeuchi and her editors behind Sailor Moon. Other Sailor Moon fansites and fans have also debunked that viral post as well (I also included links of them in my video description) The creation of Sailor Moon all started because Toei wanted a Sailor V anime and Takeuchi instead created Sailor Moon with five core members. She chose five because she was inspired by Himitsu Sentai Gorenger (The first Super Sentai made up of five members. It's also the same franchise that inspired Power Rangers in the 90s). And that her lifestyle growing up was also written into the characters and settings. Again, I want to apologize to those I've hurt with the careless writing in my script. I promise to do better.
It was a misstep. The problem is like the OP ppl are quick to link “at a low place” with all the way “down bad” and struggling, which makes them love and support the come up even more. Yes, you can still be at a low place and be rich. Yes, you can struggle in more ways than one esp financially. But the real problem lies when ppl are always quick to equate the two. It’s always instantaneously, and it shouldn’t be bc one is not like the other. It’s not one over the other, but there is a clear difference in being rich (grew up rich too) in life and struggling with a project at the moment, relatively ok and struggling in the moment, and flat out broke/poor and grew up broke and poor then having the underdog story evb loves to follow along to. There will always be a difference. I’m not too sure if this is the route they wanted to take, but basically, there’s no reason to create the sympathetic overly wholesome “underdog” background plot esp with misconstrued words that leaves everything in for debates. With that, I also want to point out how misconstruing said words easily cause bigger problems within a back and forth. Bc ppl will automatically feel to think in a bad place & struggling as maybe always struggling (financially etc) grew up poor they might relate and get even happier knowing how far everything has come-versus her not being that bad, actually well off enough (financially) which makes them take a step back and feel a way all based of something that got subjugated from individual to individual. The mood is set more intense, the ovation higher for the thoroughly struggling artist vs the artist who was struggling in a way yea but not the way we thought oto not even saying anything. It wasn’t wrong or all too careless to point out how she wasn’t struggling..in the way most would think first. More ppl may have been unaware for so long and put more feels into it thinking she was struggling in this way rather than that way, when she wasn’t. There was something else I felt to include but…🫠😅
All that matters, is the result: She made Sailor Moon. I wouldn't let this current trend of media brainwashing, "rich people = bad/privileged/not allowed to have low points" overshadow her achievement(s).

Matter of perspective. If you live in a mansion on top of high rise building, going down a floor can be called "a low place". Doesn't mean you're on the ground with everyone else though,, much less the basement.
she was a struggling artist, but not in a financial sense. A lot of very rich artists can be struggling artists because whatever money you have you literally cannot buy inspiration or motivation.
Everyone has a shitty life, it is hypocrite to think ohh she has a better life than me, what a lucky girl when it wasn't true. I think being mangaka itself is already a hard job.
@@Lissemt mistranslations and assumptions because most mangakas are poor or middle class(dont need a degree or anything to be a mangaka). And you rarely make big bucks with being a mangaka unless you are top 3 shounen jump manga or a merchandise haven like sailormoon or doraemon.
I never believed she was poor. Since the fashion in the manga were always looks stylish and her art style even reminds me of a fashion designer sketches, i thought she's at least middle class. Someone who was able to purchase fashion magazines etc. still. Even if she's born rich, it doesn't take away from her works. Sailor Moon is still one of the most influential manga and i love it. I have the whole series on my bookshelf.
she is not middle class. no middle class girl in the world do figure skating for sport. they only do it for recreation. and she depict figure skating in sailormoon very well which means she used to do it in somekind of pro athlete way.
You can be poor and still draw fashionable clothes; they can be clothes they wished they had. They aren’t isolated from tv, movies, and magazines they can skim through
Either way I wouldn't be an artist or even alive if not for her art n the empathy she put into the story n the anime. I will never not bawl when Super Sailor Moon saves Sailor Saturn from Pharoah 90, as she disassociates with drive n determination deep in her eyes as she penetrates the shell where Hotaru is fighting Pharoah 90, then when she's carrying bby Hotaru at the end of the fierce battle with her sailor fuku in tatters n hair astray. It makes me tear up just writing the scene out
@@PoppyKiddo7 I can honestly say well done to you. ❤stay strong and always enjoy the little things in life. The little things make life worthwhile. Small victories are much more enjoyable. The big victories are nice as well but we have more small victories everyday. Blessings to you.
It’s funny that you mention that because the most famous “rags to riches” story Cinderella isn’t even a rags to riches story. Her father was a well off merchant, it’s her step mother that took her down to where she was in “rags” and then she shoots past her previous wealth to be a princess/queen. It’s just riches to riches with a bump in the road.
Big dreams require lots of funding and spare time. When you’re poor you’re gonna be working hard and focused on surviving and keeping the lights on. You won’t have the money or free time to develop and advance yourself in personal hobbies yet alone turn them into careers. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it’s definitely a lot more harder stressful. Rich people tend to be more successful in entertainment cause they already have the free time and money to invest in it. They also don’t have to stress as much over the financial losses or hits that happen when their projects aren’t successful.
Japan has a different economy and rich is a bit of relative concept. Can't blame her for being born in a prosperous time for Japan. Manga is hard. She still choose go pursue her dreams. She still chose to get degrees and actively uses her interests in her stories. So what if she started out with money and a loving family boo hoo.
"Get a degree that will find her a job, as a "just incase" kind of thing." Good words, there is nothing wrong with chasing your dreams. Just have a backup plan...
Shoot for the stars, but bring a parachute. Not very into my current job but damn do i like having money, work experience, and still having enough time for hobbies.
Exactly. Plus, a lot of artists don't have degrees in visual art, music, theater, etc. but still do well, while some that do have these sorts of degrees can still struggle. It doesn't seem to make much difference when it comes to getting a good job, aside from acquiring skill, and there are cheaper ways to do so. People should take these college classes in art if they really need it to perfect their craft AND they can afford it, not because they think that if they get the degree, they'll be a successful artist.
I can understand that, it sucks when we can't reach the level we want cuz limited time and energy we can allocate to our passion, but on one hand, if you need everything to be perfect in order to even start doing it, that's not passion per se, don't you think? It's more like passtime.
People who say that you can still pursue your passion even if you don't have the means need to better understand that you also need a support system to do so. If you're worrying about money, or health, or just sustaining yourself, you don't have as much time as well-off people to do what you love. A support system allows you to have those precious pockets of time where you can do what you love without sacrificing your money and wellbeing. Providing for yourself is exhausting, especially if you're living paycheck to paycheck.
It kinda makes sense. Usagi herself is very clearly a self insert, to the point whenever Naoko depicts herself, she depicts herself as a rabbit. I always thought that Usagi must’ve had rich parents because her childhood house is huge for being in a big city with expensive real estate.
@@Saf_yipee fr there are so many talented artists who doesn't get noticed yet there r people who just smeared paints on canvas and made millions. It's about connections with people famous to be successful now, trying to become successful without connection would be hard nowadays
I was expecting you to mention all the luxury brand designs she used when you led in about her rich upbringings. Princess Serenity's dress is Dior for example, Saturn and Pluto have splash art in designer outfits, and a number of villains have runway looks too.
i have to applaud her parent, its responsible move to encourage the daughter to have a stable job first so she wont be drifting in uncertain direction if her manga career failed once. . to be fair, you cannot call every ppl who born from rich family as "happy" there are toxic abusive families out there that being low income citizen with freedom become better for someone. it depends on each individual case
Also It's Japan, the father could have wanted her to become a housewife and put pressure on the women of the family to be conservative. Rich does not equal freedom
I love Sailor Moon. She opened a lot of doors for me. After discovering her, I bought Sailor Moon playing cards and posters. I love her so much. I remember reading an article about her in Asiaweek magazine. I had it photocopied and framed. It's been displayed on my cabinet for many years now. Thanks to Sailor Moon, I found something I can focus my mind. I devoted my time into watching anime, read manga, going to conventions, and meeting like minded people there. I'm still a fan of Sailor Moon today. I recently completed the new Sailor Moon manga set. Really love it. 🥰
about that statement from her being "in a low place in life", that could also be interpreted mentally or emotionally, not exactly financially. like maybe during that time she had felt lonely. I remember working at my first job since graduating college and feeling really lonely and wanting to hang out with my friends, but we could never do so because of our busy lives. perhaps that's what happened to her during that time, so we can't exactly say that statement from her was false. Just that people interpreted it wrongly
@@evamariegapulan3510 Thank you for watching! You are absolutely correct. You can always experience struggle or low points in life no matter what your financials are like. The purpose of my video was to show that the viral post that spread a couple of years ago was completely made up by someone (I listed some sources in my description debunking the post). Some of my sources include some of the most major Sailor Moon fansites that collect and translate Naoko Takeuchi interviews. Which shows that the viral post is made up, and that the creation of Sailor Moon all started because Toei wanted a Sailor V anime and Takeuchi instead created Sailor Moon with five core members inspired by Himitsu Sentai Gorenger. I included in my title that it was made up (literally has no source), but because I only said it was false in my video, people may not have picked up on that and that is completely my fault.
@@SabrinaN-ht2nn thank you for the correction. I wrote it based on my stupid memory and got mixed between Azabu and Setagaya. But yeah, Azabu is pretty chic, near Hiiro too where a lot of French people and restaurants gather (the embassy is there too)
Literally all the main characters are upper middle class to wealthy given their homes / apartments, lifestyles and where they live in Tokyo. It’s a reflection of what she knows
No one has ever suggested otherwise. Acknowledging that economic privilege makes your life easier isn’t denying that you’ll still have to work hard and have struggles.
I grew up with Sailor Moon in the 90s and studied it religiously on the early internet in all its glory, so I’m shocked when to find there are still things to learn about Naoko! I had no idea about her pharmacology background and how serious she was about it. If I had known that growing up, I think my life would have gone a lot differently honestly lmao. I loved Ami the most growing up, Usagi had definitely become more endearing and relatable over time, though I love all of them and their group dynamics especially brought out by the anime filler. Thanks for a great video!!
Moonies: "Naoko was at a low place, had no friends, was struggling as an artist, Sailor Moon made her a millionaire" Naoko: "I was a typical college student hanging out with my girlfriends, had a wild lovelife playing around with men, wore expensive clothing brands, had two cars, eventually got a steady income as a pharmacist before leaving it to pursue a mangaka career, had been drawing cute love stories for nakayoshi for almost a decade and released a best selling story about figure skating in book format!" Yup, sounds exactly like a depressing starving artist's life to me 😂
the figure skating gave her away. no upper class girls do figure skating in a pro way. only the high end born girls able to afford professional figure skating way. it's a very subtle and elegant flex. in figure skating you really have to have the unlimited money to afford it, the time to spend it, the correct height to do it (figure skating is very unfriendly to height, too tall she would be janky, too short she wouldnt be able to jump), and the last.. the support of full house wife mom. only 1% of the 1% of high end society girls able to thrive in figure skating world.
As a long-time sailor moon fan, I dont see how it matters. Her upbringing doesn't change the fact that she has written/drawn one of the most popular manga ever.
Why are some people mad just because her parents are rich?? Talk about sailor moon and her works. Her having rich parents is not the main topic. And just because she is rich doesnt mean shes immune to everything.
I know Togashi is best known for Hunter x Hunter, but we oldies grew up with Yu Yu Hakusho. It's just groundbreaking at the time and paved the way for new shonen manga. If you like Sailor Moon, check out Please Save My Earth by Saki Hiwatari. There are similarities as Takeuchi was inspired by it, but PSME is a darker story.
Please Save My Earth!! I was really into that manga as well. Even now, I sometimes think about it, even though I read it more than 30 yrs ago. Back then, it was called "bokutama."
@@JJ-yl7mc I agree, I still think of it from time to time, Yu Yu Hakusho too. I think because the characters were well developed and the storylines were emotional, so they stick with me. There's a sequel to PSME which follows Rin and Alice's child called "The Moonlight That Surrounds Me", it just finished a few years ago and gave a nice glimpse into their lives after they grew up (quite well-adjusted adults despite everything).
I new she was a girlboss and was rich after learning about her love story, but never really thought about her upbringing. If I had seen the original post I may have been surprised but wouldnt have investigated the claim and believed it. However I didn't see the original post so if you asked me what I thought her social class was growing up I would have guessed she had a parent who was a doctor or lawyer or something like that.
They say Sailor Moon was also inspired by tokusatsu like Poitrine from the Fushigi comedy series. Poitrine is about a teenage girl that gets mystical power.
Sailor Moon was actually the first anime I've ever seen with my own two eyes. I still remember that night when i was 6 years old. It was 6am I was staying at my play-cousin's house which they all fell asleep. I was flipping thru channels and ran into a sailormoon episode. It changed my whole my perspective on animation in general. My eyes lite up👀 i never saw anything like it. I told myself "i want to draw characters like that✨". Many years go by and now i draw anime/manga characters damn there like a pro!
Was Takeuchi rich? I always had the impression she grew up middle class. Still, it's nice to see a video correcting the misinformation going around. And to answer your question, my favorite Sailor Soldier is Sailor Mars. 😉❤
@supersasukemaniac You have to remember the time period she grew up in though. The middle class used to be a lot healthier than it is today. Just look at the Simpsons. They seem rich by 2024 standards, but were seen as lower middle class back in the late 80s/early 90s.
@rociolunar8 I guess the discrepancy comes from how Usagi is portrayed in the series. Takeuchi said Usagi was heavily inspired by her childhood but Usagi doesn't seem rich. Though I suppose Usagi's class could be a creative liberty.
Naoko Takeuchi is amazing! She was so multi talented. She was intelligent became a pharmacist among many other things. Also, a lot of her characters represent certain aspect of her and her life. She also was a Shinto Shrine Maiden like Mars, she loves ports cars which Uranus represents and such. I love Sailor Moon and Naoko soo much! She also is amazingly beautiful as well. Granted I'm not a fan of her misandrist streak though ugh. This was a great video.
Was Sailor Moon the series that popularized superhero action in magical girl anime? Of course, there was Cutey Honey way earlier, but the magical girl series of the 80s seem to mostly be the Creamy Mami type. After Sailor Moon, magical girl shows started incorporating a lot of action elements. Card Captor Sakura, Pretty Cure, etc.
Incoming wall of text, sorry, I talk a lot. Cutey Honey was an ecchi shonen manga though...she was more in line with Supergirl or Wonder Woman in Japan's eyes. I would say that Sailor Moon wasn't the only first of the period, but definetely made the magical girl genre relevant again. The magical girls of the past were, at their core, coming of age fairy tales. The transformation is a metaphor for growing up, coming in terms with change and adapting to new information and environments. Add in fancy outfits, parallels to a western witch (like a wand, something to fly with and a pet), and you got a magical girl. CCSakura was a genius series on that regard; with Sailor Moon introducing action, how would a traditional magical girl act in the new millenium? Fancy outfits per episode? Check. Magical companions? Check. Parallels to maturity and growing up? Check. A broom to fly? The fly card. More modern elements like antagonists and queer relationships? Check! And Pretty Cure, the original was a power duo of magical girls. On the surface it seemed like a Sailor Moon clone, but if you dug deeper? It went back to the core of it lol. The original is literally an animated tokusatsu series (the clearest reference I can think to it is Kamen Rider) There are way too many tropes to list, but believe me, there are a ton. From kitchy special effects to side storylines balancing between silliness and a very serious plot. Tl;dr, Sailor Moon was indeed the first to show that the magical girl can be more than girls going through fairytale puberty, but her era included many firsts in the genre as well :D
@@evanmak7837 I mentioned Cutey Honey because I've read that people consider it a magical girl series. I don't really agree with that since it is definitely wasn't aimed at a shoujo audience like every other magical girl series. It did, however, have the superhero, action, monster-of-the-week structure of the series from the 90s onwards.
@@fattiger6957 Sailor Moon popularised the super hero genre of magical girls in anime but it didn't create it as there were live action tokusatsu magical girl series that predated it. SM also didn't kill off non-superhero mahou shoujo as plenty of them were produced afterwards and a lot of female superhero anime that get thought of as magical girl shows in the west aren't marketed as mahou shoujo series in Japan.
@@AC-dk4fp Ah, interesting. Thanks for the info. My interests pretty much lay with anime, so I don't know much about live-action Japanese shows. Of course I knew about tokusatsu series, but I didn't know there were all-female teams aimed at a shoujo audience.
@@fattiger6957 The all girl super hero shows I'm thinking of are all post Sailor Moon and mostly have a male audience so I'm sorry if that wasn't clear. As far as I know the live action mahou shoujo series were all single heroine until the Sailor Moon live action. Sailor Moon's anime didn't necessarily have a 'shoujo' audience either. A youtube channel called Japan Hero has some videos on female led tokusatsu series that predated sailor moon.
the fact that she feature figure skating sport in her comic/manga give away that she is an high end society member. context: professional figure skating is a very very expensive sport unless you are russian citizen that their government give full support for the athlete.
Still my favorite anime of all time!! I grew up with it and it probably formed parts of my personality as well :D My favorite scout is Minako ^^ I don't care if Takeuchi comes from a rich family or not. It's important what she did and I think she did amazing! The ideas and stories were groundbreaking at that time, and many others followed her steps :)
What's great about her is that she's not just rich girl since parents rich, she's rich also thanks to herself (well, to be exact, richer thanks to herself but still)
Sailor Moon is one of my all time favorites and it got me into anime, which changed my whole life pretty much. Sailor Mercury was always my favorite and I didn't know these things about the author's past (the references to gemstones, jewelry and all that make so much sense now). Great video ^_^.
In 1999 she Married the Yu Yu Hakusho creator while both IT and Sailor Moon came out the same year 1992 in JAPAN the English Dub of the 2 series were first in 1995 Sailor Moon and Yu Yu in like 2002 so Yu Yu Hakusho's ENGLISH dub actually had LOADS of Sailor Moon references in it English dub only.
I was first introduced to Sailor Moon through the DIC version in the early 90’s. Then came Cartoon Network and my friend got a hold of an unofficial sub of the R movie and S series from a comic book store in the late 90’s that changed everything for me. The relationship between Neptune and Uranus helped me realize my sexuality.
Matchmaking. Very common practice among upper middle class japanese. Akira toriyama and Rumiko Takahashi were introduced to each other in view of marriage back in the 80s.
I loved Sailor Moon growing up, and you just reminded me I still need to watch the final part of Crystal. For me, my favorite was always Sailor Jupiter. I like her more mature attitude, but that she was still kind, and I loved the green with pink accents and her brown boots.
It is smart , she was influenced by tokusatsu sentai stuff and made a girl version with PRETTY characters. U can have “stereotypes but everyone a pretty including bad guys 😂. She was onto something because pretty art sells
Yeah, some people just want to make a fake inspirational story just for clout. Not everyone need to endure hardships in life to be succesful. She just make use what resources she have, and she's going on the right path.
Great video! Sailor Moon was my first anime series, the one that sparked my interest in anime. My favourite guardian is Usagi ofc because we share the same character traits and a zodiac sign (cancer btw) :)
Sailor Moon has definitely left quite a legacy whether young, old, male or female over the years since the very beginning. 😮Thanks for the well researched video!
She never said she was 'low' financially. It feel like it's something others added. She used so much luxury inspirations in her work - brands, jewelry, fashion. If I remember, there's a short story in one of the volumes re: ChibiUsa's two friends - one is crazy about Dior and one about Chanel and I think there is a little note that the author loves these brands most. ... Damn now I need to go through my SM manga and find it lol
True. I still enjoy the impact of their work. I do think that I would not personally meet all of our favorite celebrities. Their impact is still discussed. We just gotta discuss it with more nuance than a blanket statement. Especially with Nostalgia Critic who described the outfits without any context. Superficial reaction is not great when the series has more subtext that is overlooked. Yes, the outfits would be outdated but I still see it with how Japan's society grew. That social caricature in most series should be transparent too.
Tale as old as time. People saying "from rags to riches" when in reality most of them came from riches already. Rich kids have 2 outcomes, the best one is that they've all the time and money in the world so they become amazing at something (for example the guitsrist of Polyphia, he's incredible but only because he had the time to become that due to being rich), the worst one is when they don't do shit with their lives and you only hear about them after they killed someone for speeding on their sports car
I never assumed she was poor. “In a low place”. Doesn’t mean “I was poor”. Like someone has also mentioned. It’s a phrase usually used towards a person mental state most of the times, rather than their financial situation.
Lol in one of her manga volume, she described that she went to NASA just to do a research for her Kaguya storyline. She's also super fashionable and fluent in English, so I knew she's a wealthy and well educated woman since I was a kid
Okay I def could be misremembering, but I could have sworn the authors notes in the 90s Mixx pocket manga saying what was said what the viral post said. I still own my og 90s copies but it could indeed be false tbh but the memory feels so real, but memory doesn't always tranfer time well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Most successful artists come from "privileged" or stable backgrounds. It's hard to be creative, focused, and have time to practice and access to supplies when you're starving or don't have a place to live. Most of the iconic artists from the Renaissance were supported by rich patrons from nobility or even the Vatican and kings/queens themselves
Real SM fans will find a lot of this info in the original mangas(they translated to English in the back of the manga books)websites with scanlations of interviews from magazones or newspapers. Where she talks about her life.

That’s because people are obsessed with Cinderella stories.

The original is literally an animated tokusatsu series (the clearest reference I can think to it is Kamen Rider)
There are way too many tropes to list, but believe me, there are a ton.
