Once it got so hot in Kansas that the corn field started popping. When the barnyard mule saw that, he thought it was snowing and froze to death. 🐴
You know they were. No luxuries that we have today. If the stitch hits the fan tomorrow. A Lot of people wouldn't know how to survive the honest way.
Fascinating. I especially liked the Post Office. And we had desks like that when I was in grade school. Even had ink in the inkwells. I know, I'm ancient.

We had those old desks too in my primary school. They had the ink wells too. I’m 37 so I guess we had old desks lol. My dad sat in the same desks when he went to the school too 🤣

she was the biggest inspiration in my life. i wanted to live like her since i was very young. my home is full of antiques. that i only would know of by the shows. i have all of the dvds. love the ingalls

Like Rose, I am unable to have children. I have none to leave my last name, my estate, nor my legacy.....such is life.
Living in Minnesota, I have been to Walnut Grove and to Pepin Wisconsin. Nice to see this part of her life as well. It is more accurate to say that the books were based partly on her life in Kansas, but also Wisconsin, Minnesota, and South Dakota.
I am a SW Minnesota native as well. I always had to laugh at the mountains and hilly terrain in the background of the tv show. Pretty flat prairie out there!

@@johnjohnon8767 she moved to Missouri as an adult, also lived briefly in Florida, which has always made me laugh for some unknown reason. Pioneers and palm trees, so different from the stock images in my head.
I bet the Michael Landon "Pa" would have loved stripping down to that chest and getting some sun, oceanside. I wonder how he would have contrived an injury to allow it?
My grandmother said goodbye to her mother (my great grandmother) for the last time at Walnut Grove Minnesota.
I've never been to Walnut Grove, Minnesota but I need to visit. In the TV series they talked about Mankato so many times which I was born in Mankato in 1967.

The newspaper in the post office that you couldn’t read full title of was the Kansas City Evening Star. It was published 1789 - 1963. There was also a morning paper but I don’t remember its name. The evening paper was dropped in 1963 and the once daily paper was call the Kansas City Star. I’m a K.C. girl and remember going to only one daily paper. The Kansas City newspaper would have been the nearest large city for them to get news from. My, how times have changed! Thanks, Chris! This was interesting.
Wouldn't that be more like 1889? Was there a Kansas City in 1789? The country was barely in existence, before the Louisiana Purchase, etc. in 1789.
@@glennlrw , thanks for your inquiry. I evidently read something wrong in my original research. The town was founded in the 1830’s & chartered in 1850. The newspaper was first published in 1880.
Wow, that cabin is much smaller than the one that was in the TV series. I specifically remember on upstairs loft that the girls slept in.
The cabin of the tv series was the one of Walnut Grove...not that of Kansas. If You ser the tv series the first chapter shows this litttle cabin of one room. On second chapter they moved to Minessota in Plum Creek near to Walnut Grove and Charles built the cabin with the second floor.
Besides which, TV always takes liberties, even with non-fictional stories and characters. You can't use the TV as the best educational teacher. 🙂
I can't even imagine living with a family in the little cabin. Love the school. It's beautiful. The old mailboxes are so cool. Just think back in the 1800s it took weeks sometimes months for mail to be delivered. I love little places like this and just seeing the history and how they lived back then.
Very cool, life was harder but also easier in those times.

Back then..they did what was necessary.
Hay I lived in a tenent house not much larger then this growing up. 6 kids and my parents. Quite comfy. Front room. Kitchen bedroom. Built the biys a tiny room from back porch.older days lots of prople had parents bed in front room. Outhouse. Some days I long for those days gone by

My grandfather built a cabin not much bigger than Laura's cabin. They had NINE children & 2 adults in it.
Imagine that there were 4 of them when they moved there, and Carrie was added while they lived there. Not a lot of privacy!
My husband and I went there a couple years ago. It was such a cool thing to experience.

I don't understand why they never made the traditional 12" dolls, house, furniture, and other buildings and people from the town as toys to buy. As a kid I would have loved those, and played with them endlessly.

My great-grandmother Doris, that raised my Mama, introduced me to the Little House on the Prairie books when I was about 9 years old. She read them to me for many years, until I begin to be able to read to her and then I did so. She had been at school teacher and really delighted in the two of us reading together. We had a very special relationship. We watched the TV show together as much as possible, as well. Precious memories. And books and TV show from a very special time in our country's history! Love them still @ 48 years old. 🙂💗
@@jen4him72 your relationship with your grandmother sounds very much like the one I had with my mamaw. She was born in 1906 in the hills of West Virginia, and grew up very much like Laura did. I learned so much from her. I loved hearing her stories of growing up. She raised 10 successful children. Her last child born in 1949 died of pneumonia at 6 months old. Growing up I would just stare at his tiny tombstone with the lamb on it. My mamaw dearly loved children and babies and was a role model to me like no other. In my later teen years I remember asking her did she miss the old days and ever want to go back. She said, "no, it was too hard." By the time she passed in January of 1990 she had cable TV, a microwave, air conditioning. a Mr. Coffee, and other modern conveniences that we take for granted. She considered these things luxuries. I'll never forget one story she told me about my oldest uncle. He was getting to the crawling stage as a baby. She was home alone, (my grandfather was a coal miner) and she needed to milk the cow. She didn't have a safe place to put uncle Charlie so he wouldn't get hurt while she went to the barn. She said she carefully tied him to the bed post to keep him safe till she could get back from milking the cow. I know she would have greatly been thankful for a play pen. We take so much for granted in today's times. Even being poor and having little my mom said she never saw her daddy wear dirty shoes and you wouldn't find as much as a gum wrapper in their yard. My grandparents were very neat and clean with everything they owned. I remember when it would come up about poor people being dirty. My mamaw would always say, "soap and water are cheap." I'm so thankful for the life's lessons that she taught me. There aren't many left like those fine old people, and I miss that generation being here on earth with us.
I’ve been watching Little House for probably the past 8 months or so (for the millionth time). I drove home from Tulsa OK to Casper WY for Christmas and passed a sign for this on my drive! I wasn’t sure if it was the real property or not but now I’ll be sure to stop there sometime!

Chris, can you believe that bed was considered a full double bed in which both Charles and Caroline slept and the children had to make do with just a blanket on the floor and remember there was no indoor plumbing or running water, just an outhouse that was freezing cold in the winter. Thanks for sharing.

This means that it's my family.
Mom is still an off grid homesteader. Our family is still very much alive and well.

The real story is what happened to the Native people who were kicked off that land to make way for the settlers
True!! In the book, Laura talks about the "red skinned men, the mohawk hair, and the endless beating of their drums at night. They had encounters with the Natives, but were never harmed.
That's not the entire story.

I know I say this a lot, but this is one of my favorites that you have done. I would love to have a house in the country, but not as small as the Ingalls cabin. Good job, Chris. Love your videos. There is a lot to be said about the simpler life.
I heard this is the exact location, found by some local historians; (I wish they would tell their story of how they found it!) & newscaster Bill Kurtis parents own this land, or bill and his sister do now. It is so great of the Kurtis family to allow the public to visit !

Thank you for showing this video. My sister and I are huge fans of Little House and have read Laura's books. I'm so in historical places and this video truly was awesome to watch. They're other landmarks she spoke about in her book. If you ever visit them, please make a video. 😊
Just a though in regard to the school house...I doubt a one room school house would have had a nurses room. I have a feeling the building was later used as a residence (home) and that section was partitioned off to make a kitchen.

The Engles family were actually in South Dakota. My grandmother went to school with Laura in Erwin.

She wrote her books in Mansfield Missouri, my dad lived about three miles down the road from her and walked by her house every day on the way to school, he even has a Bible autographed by her, not sure what his age was at the time but he is 83 now.
History is a closer than people think.
Him and his friend were selling Bible's donated to the school to provide money for their wood working shop, she purchased both boxes from my father and his friend and signed signed a copy for my dad and his friend.
My father still has the Bible and the cedar chest he made in shop with the money for the Bible's.
Some day in the future (hopefully far in the future) they will be passed down to me and then down to one of my children.

The actual filming location was in Simi Valley. We used to walk through through their during the summers before it all disappeared.
So I looked it up. $25.00 a month in 1872 is comparable to $533.26 nowadays. Could you even imagine teaching today’s children/teenagers with all the BS, and back talk teachers put up with, and getting paid only $533.06 BEFORE taxes? No way! I wonder what the pay discrepancy was for male teachers vs. female teachers in 1872? I’m going to have to look that up.
I'm sure the wages were determined by where the schools were & what the town could afford. This was long before they before the Feds took over & turned them into a disaster.
Thank you for going to the trouble of showing all of us Little House On The Prairie Show long time fans. I still watch th show n love all the characters very much. Life back then must have been so hard both physically as well as mentally. Most everything had to be done by hand. Back breaking work. I admire people who love bed back then to have survived, though many died from Diseases to starvation n many terrible ways imaginable. They were good, strong, Christian people.

Jan. 24, 2021---Thanks for the video as I always wondered what it looked like. Never read the books, but both sisters have. Used to drive truck all over the U.S. and one time I came within 10 miles of this place. Had the time to take a look, but didn't know what the road conditions were and not about to take 70 feet of truck and trailer down an unknown road.
I love the books but I'm missing #9😪😞

In the books however Carrie is mentioned in the first book Little House in the Big Woods when they lived in Wisconsin.

I think this is my 5th time watching the series
It is hard to believe 5 people lived in one bed!
Lawson Farms Homestead , maybe a trundle bed to pull out at night for the children.
Laura recorded that she and her sister, Mary, had their own bed. Carrie would have been in a trundle bed.
