- Don't miss our new birding adventure in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, in the latest episode of our 'Field Guides' series.
In this episode, Chris and Diego explore the lowland Pacific jungles of San Cipriano in search of rare Chocó endemic species like Sapayoa. They'll also enjoy the world's weirdest birding transport, learn to cook some typical Colombian Pacific dishes, and seek out rare poison frogs in the depths of the jungle. It's our most adventurous episode yet!
This video is brought to you along with our partners at Kowa Sporting Optics, who are helping us to achieve our mission to make birding more accessible to people around the world.

What a joy to watch! You reveal so many wonders, so many magical experiences of nature, so many kind human encounters; such a great advertisement for respectful birding and respect for the the natural world and local people and community. Having had an 11 day glimpse of Colombia I understand the magical quality of what’s possible out there with the right guides and access. Long may that continue, and congratulations on a fantastic series and mission.
Thank you so much John, what a lovely comment, we all really appreciate it and glad you enjoyed the episode
Does anybody look forward to these episodes as much as I do?? The production quality of this video is incredible!
THANKS mate!
This is the best travel episode of The Birders Show yet. The production quality, storytelling, cultural immersion, and birding just keep getting better. Well done TBS
glad you like it !
Lo mejor es la felicidad del guía cuando le regalan los binoculares!!! felicitaciones por esa hermosa labor!!!
es la parte que más nos gusta de hecho!
Wow! He was overwhelmed with that gift! What a great program, and a wonderful way to encourage local interest and conservation!
I think it was my favorite binocular donation moment yet! Thanks for your comment and for watching :)
- Tatayo´s glass frog ( Hyalinobatrachium tatayoi)
- Sun´s glass frog ( Hyalinobatrachium aeroguttatum)
- Vaillant's Frog ( Lithobates vaillanti)
- Western Basilisk ( Basiliscus galeritus)
- A male of Hyalinobatrachium aeroguttatum caring for two clutches of eggs.
- Kokoe Poison Frog ( Phyllobates aff. aurotaenia)
- Cope's Parrot Snake ( leptophis cf. depressirostris)
- Sun´s glass frog ( Hyalinobatrachium aeroguttatum)
Saludos,
Thanks Christian for sharing your knowledge .. It was helpful 👍
Muchas gracias Cristian! Estoy tan feliz de que hayas disfrutado el capítulo 🥳 y muchísimas gracias por tu ayuda con los nombres de las especies de anfibios y reptiles!
I never get tired of seeing you guys make peoples day by giving them the binoculars. So good.
Thanks, Glenn! It’s always our favorite moment as well 😁
Yeeeeeahh best adventure so far! loved the brujitas and the puffbirds!
Excellent trip report, looks like a great place to experience what this part of Colombia has to offer.
Guys i love it! you're the best embassadeurs of Colombia!!!!
Thank you so much, Carmen 😁 we really appreciate it
I really shouldn't be watching this because it's so amazing, and you guys do such a great job of showing the beautiful birds and wonderful people of the region, that it makes me want to leave everything behind and go right now ❤.
I was lucky enough to bird in Guyana and staying at an eco lodge in Iwokrama was one of the best experiences of my life. Colombia is a birder's dream, and I hope to visit these lovely sites someday in the near future.
do come!!!
Life is short, do it!
grand!
Loved your presentation.
thanks!
Gifting the binos brings a tear to my eyes everytime. Good on yah, well done. Cheers from Canada.
I love seeing you on those adventures guys! Cooking something with Mama Yeya and sharing with the local guides! That's what makes us better birders, we enjoy everything that comes with birds! Great episode and the best location!
Thank you, Jorge! And we couldn’t agree more; that mixture of birds, people, culture and everything else is what makes birding special 😁
Great episode guys! And wow, he was touched when he found out he could actually keep the bins. For some it may seem like a small thing, but what an impact you guys (and Kowa) are having!
Thank you, Diedert. Glad you enjoyed it mate! And I absolutely agree, a lot of people might take access to binoculars for granted - we’ve all been lucky here - but as a lot of us birders know, this passion can be life-changing. I hope it is for Lucho and the young people in his community 😁
Not too shabby!

Thanks, Ronan!
excelente trabajo, interesante la historia del Sapayoa
Muchas gracias 😁
Wow!! I've been waiting for this episode ever since you teased us with the brujita shots and it did not disappoint. San Cipriano and Never (sp?) introduced me to recreational birding, so I was thrilled to see him in the video also. Now I want to return to Colombia and re-trace all of your "backyard" birding locations. Best show ever - it will be hard to surpass this.
Thank you so much Sandra! We’re so happy you enjoyed the episode. And how wonderful that you were introduced to birding in San Cipriano with Never, he’s an excellent guide for sure. And we’ll do our very best to surpass this one, it’ll be hard though, you’re right 😁
Amazing video!
Very moving. Well done and bravo Kowa.

Diego and I both use 8x binoculars, Diego favors 8x32 and mine are 8x42
May i ask, as someone new to birding, what does bird friendly coffee benefit? What makes it different? Does a reasonable portion go toward bird funds? Haha I’m lost.
Bird Friendly Coffee has a range of benefits for birds and people, especially by focusing on conserving habitat and providing farmers with a premium for their products. This link is pretty good at explaining the various benefits of bird-friendly coffee, hope it provides some more insight :) nationalzoo.si.edu/migratory-birds/about-bird-friendly-coffee
Any info on local birding guide contact info for this amazing place?
Yes, you can contact Never Murillo who appears in the video through his Instagram, @murillonever. He’s the most knowledgeable local guide in San Cipriano
Ps any chance of a few moths thanks 🇬🇧steve
We’ll definitely try to include some more moths too 😁
