- MLS Penalties were the most unique thing in the soccer world. The ball was placed 35 yard from the goal and when the whistle was blown, it was a 1v1 with the attacker and goalkeeper. Enjoy these throwback 90's Penalties. #Penalty #MLS #OldSchoolPenalty

2:39 lol, a penalty in a penalty shootout?!?!? wtf o_O
Strange but funny shootout.
And then a classic penalty for a foul by the goalie. Weird. But funny :)
LOLOLOL Is just a fucking weird country, where people don't have the right to go in an Hospital, and everyone carries a Gun around. weirdos
@Boeing 777x Hi know, you're right, being a weirdo is not cool.
Penaltyception. :V
Can we bring back the shootout for a skills challenge in the MLS All-Stars?
maccmps1 heck yes I second this also because this year will be 2020 all star will be 20 years off all star games
Hell yes. Start a petition!
MLS all stars? Lol it must go away like the shoot out
Não!
For all calling for the return of this idiocy must have forgotten about the injuries that occurred during these attempts on goal plus all the controversy with the clock. I recall distinctly 2 very badly broken legs.
Shootouts were great. It's also hilarious/awesome to see all the old European NASL guys like Cruyff, Beckenbauer run contrary to dopey eurosnobbery and say how much more they preferred ending draws with shootouts.
It’s funnier but it’s not the real football
The MLS has come a looong way from these days
I remember these as a kid me and my dad would watch the games and be excited for these shootouts. They should bring em back.
Nope
This is very good for preschool soccer!!
Last goal was the best. Never understood why one would drive all the way down into the goal/goalie.
Because they probably sucked at long range goal, so they tried to get closer cause they thought it was easier. Stupid players
@@dominicmenna8711 "stupid players" 😂
Why MLS keep reuploading this same video?
During a time when the league was in its infancy.
I always liked the shootouts. Certainly more competitive than ending a game with plain PK's; a shootout comes down to the Keeper's skill vs. the player's talent rather than just hoping you move the right way when the ball is kicked.
K-TAC it’s super easy to score like that.. lift the ball over the keeper... sounds score every time...
@@mats7492 as I recall, and from the video above, there were about equal saves and goals. I'm not advocating a return in the same way in MLS.
I'd like to see this in for the Caraboa Cup. Bring some excitement and differentiate it to the FA Cup, instead of a reply or traditional penalty shoot out.
I know it's heretical, but I always liked these (I think the USL/A-League/whatever-Div-2-was-back-then did them, too). Mostly because kicks from the spot always seemed so random. Ending ties in PKs and this both suck, but at least these were... slightly... more like regular gameplay. I think the real problem was that the US was once again used as the ginnea pig because we wouldn't know the difference from the real game.
Seeing a referee holding the flag and blowing the whistle is so odd.
Bizarro
It's easy as hell for the goalie, they make it soo obvious where they're gonna shoot it. 🙄 well they also sometimes make it 😅
That's because MLS players have no idea how to chip the ball over the goalkeeper
Who thought they should put penalties in the title? These weren't penalties ever. But as a means to decide a draw with an audience that doesn't like tie scores, this was better than PKs. It involved actual soccer skills, unlike PKs.
Another attempt to change the rules of football by the mls.
gee, ever heard of the NASL?
Adam Wright actually no.
@@wilko3017 well, come sit under the learning tree. Prior to MLS, there was the North American Soccer League. It ran from, I believe, 1968 to 1984 before folding. Most of the teams were a bust at the box office, but a few like the New York Cosmos were huge box office draws. The Cosmos in their heyday routinely drew between 45k-70k to their home games. Literally the best players in the entire world at the time were in this league. Pele, George Best, Johan Cruyff, Frank Beckenbauer, Rodney Marsh and so on. The NASL came up with the concept of a shootout because it's pretty foreign to North American sports audiences for games to end in ties. NHL games did up until the 90's but even they changed. Early MLS adopted this concept. The feedback from fans has always been mixed but, especially in the NASL, the players loved it. There's an incredible documentary from 2006 about the NASL and the New York Cosmos that, if you're a soccer nerd, I highly recommend called Once In a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos. Many teams in MLS started or got their name from the NASL teams..San Jose Earthquakes, Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders, Vancouver Whitecaps were all NASL teams. Without the NASL, there would be no MLS. There MIGHT be another domestic league but probably only now would it be getting started.
Adam Wright well thanks for the detailed history. Yes I know of the football that predated the mls, and the big stars of the 70’s, but assumed it was called the mls. Anyway glad they ditched the hockey style PK’s, and glad they didn’t implement some other wacky changes like having 4 quarters to allow more advertising.
Esso começou no séc passado na de c de 70 e 80 na Nasl onde o Pelé jogou!
This is just awful. Nice to see MLS has improved.
I find this version of a penalty shootout more interesting it’s kind of like hockey, 🏒. Holy flashback Batman! Damn the jerseys in the early 90s were hideous, sad thing is the style trend has come back 🤢, hopefully it won’t last long. Couldn’t stand having to tuck my jersey in before taking the pitch.
Vim pelo Gaules e fiquei pelo meme
unlike most people here, i actually remember this era of MLS...it sucked, and this stupid "shootout" was a large part of the suckiness.
Wow they are bad
They got rid of these before I could see one in person. I think we should bring them back
Shoot out >>>>>>> penalty kicks. 👀
Pésimo nada que ver , confunden lo que son los penales 🙏🙏🙏
This is cringe to watch
Só tem canela dura nesse vídeo. Um jogador pior que o outro.
Jajajaja idiots ,es fútbol no hokey
These shootouts are so unfair and unbalanced. I’m glad they got rid of these
And regular PKs are so much more fair and balanced?
Football isn’t hockey.. glad this nonsense is a thing of the past. It’s also way to easy... just lift the ball over the keeper once he is close enough... every amateur player can do that nowerdays
Those shorts. Those shoes. Those ugly ass haircuts.
