Great story at the end! And here I thought I was the only one that keeps old shoe laces! If they are still in good condition, I keep em. Just like anything else I am finally going to throw away, I have to look it over and decide if there's any good parts to strip before it goes in the trash. If I can think of a possible use for something, I keep it for a while. I just used an old lawn tractor engine I stripped from an old junker twenty years ago. I also scored a radioflyer brand big wheel as a garbage pick. One of the rear wheels was smashed by a car in a garage or driveway I assume. So you take the end of the line on the figure 8 and feed the tail through your carabinier (or leave enough slack to loop it later) then you feed it back through the figure 8 in reverse (there is a "right way" and "wrong way" to do this, it should flow easily, and look "more" symmetrical) and then finish it off with an overhand knot back to the main line. The Double Figure 8! (With safety!) One of my favorite knots! Aside from the Bowline of course! What I really need are the two for when you need to tie a line around a tree! (from a tarp... Laser looks nice and lets you get some pretty complicated shapes. The alternative would probably be engraving with a CNC machine (also expensive, I'd guess probably more than stamping from the time it takes). Too bad the durability of the laser isn't so great, but for some light-wear tools it should be fine
Depending on the material you are engraving, plastics and softer material is where lasers shine. The problem with this tool is it was hardened already when Tekton got it and they used the laser on the hard tool steel so it couldn't go very deep. =)
Steve- One day I was in a pizzeria getting the scouts some chow and a guy came up to me and said “I run the marina on 115th Street, we have a boat in dry dock that belonged to the Sea Scouts, it’s yours if you want it”. 😳. I came very close to starting a Sea Scout Post... 😃👍
Great job as usual. I recently learned of Tekton tools. I have purchased a couple of socket sets and two wrench sets from them. I am very impressed. If you have a chance, take a look at their wrenches and sockets for quality and then compare prices. They are tough to beat. Best to you and yours.

U S Army does the same thing. I get rid of all the standard laces and use 550 paracord. They are indestructible. Don't use that cheap polyester paracord you can get at a craft store. Use the real thing. Your laces will outlast your sneakers 4 to 1 easily. If the holes are too small on the sneakers you can use your newly made metal marlin spike to open them up a tad.
So was it the laces or not John? LOL Hey you need to auction the old shoes off on ebay after spraypaint "Worn by Scoutcrafter" on them! Also, I think you need to write Tekton and tell them the punch they sent you was defective b/c it was missing two faceted sides. Ask for a refund or the two missing sides and see what they say.😜
Hello John, after this video I start wondering if you ever have a collection of hooks. I think they automatically go together with some types of knot and it would be very interesting and fascinating getting to know something more about all sorts of hooks out there, from the industrial heavy duty ones to the hardware store's ones. What do you think about it? Have a great day 😉👍
I know the Marine trainees at Lympstone not far from where I live are a pain in the backside when on liberty. When I was in the police we would regularly get them misbehaving at the Clubs in Exeter. Easily identified by the haircut and being in a bunch, we would just shove them in the back on a van until we could get the Provost Marshal to come get them. They got in far more trouble with them than they would have done with our courts.
There were always a group of rowdy enlistments in every branch of the service. They get drunk and think they are invincible. Thank God I was always in units that were as disciplined off base as we were on base. In all my years in the service I never went to bars on Liberty. My leave always consisted of nice meals and a hotel room where I would heal up and watch TV! 😃👍
Good story. New Balance huh? My nephew is I the USN Security Services. We have a pretty tight bond and he was telling me about boot camp, boy have things changed. Anyway, he couldn’t wait to get our of boot camp so he could back to wearing the underwear he wanted but also, he said they give you these senior citizen sneaks to wear. Yep you guessed it New Balance. Hahaha, I think most of us transition to New Balance as we tack on the years.
I have a quart size zip lock full of old shoe laces. Use them all the time to hang attach or secure things. Keep saying I am going to stop saving them but i just can’t bring myself to throw them out.
You are ate up ScoutCrafter. I had a poem brewing in my head and it escaped when you told that last story. LOL Just think what is missed by not having served in the military. All the fun and camaraderie. Have a great weekend!
Hello John, Beautiful job on the spike and great story! I wanted to ask you if you've ever had experiance with cutting glass like window or any kind of flat glass? And if you do could you maybe do a video on it? Ive learned a lot from you already but this is one thing I have never learned anywhere and something I would really like to. Thanks!
Wally- Years back I wanted to try my hand at doing stained glass... I went to classes and spent a ton of $$$ on equipment... Do you know I could never get good at cutting glass!!! I tried and practiced but when I would snap the score it would wonder! 😤 I was so frustrated I gave up. To this day glass cutting intimidates me... 😃👍
Figure 8.... that is our most used LIFE SAFETY KNOT on my Fire Department.... Figure 8 follow Though, and Figure 8 on A Bight.... And we do use the trusted Bowline... But the Figure 8 is KING
Don’t go thinking you marines got the market cornered on stuff like the laces and such. Was in the army (3rd batt)! We do the laces the same way, the reason for the bridge on the laces is so they can be cut off easily. Rangers lead the way!

ScoutCrafter my son was a Marine as well. While watching your video a minute ago he said hey Dad, how do you guys in the army tie your shoe laces? I said I don’t know whichever way we got them from the quartermaster. He said that figures typical Army. LOL
Scout, do you ever consider stamping the maker and country back on a tool when it gets faint or worn off? I've thought of doing this myself sometimes just to preserve the identity. Nothing drives me more nuts then a well made tool crafted in the USA that only has a sticker or some paint as a maker mark, destined to be lost to time.
I agree! I love a tool that is properly stamped, any tool maker that takes a shortcut in that department makes me think they took other shortcuts too! 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter Not Really Sir Scout This product Are too Expensive In my Place But I'm such a stubborn person I'll stop parties to get them...in atelier the most thing attire my attention in your presentation The laser crafting on steel is it possible?
man I agree the laser engraving sucks!!!! I love my channel locks but they are all new and laser engraved. Yet my only pair of Knipex pliers is stamped well!
How do modern marines cope with laces as most kids do not know how to tie shoes any more, Velcro killed laces off. Do they have boots with Velcro? Oh dear you have given away the secret, now you will get infiltrators.

Have a great day 😉👍
I do find them interesting however I only have a few of the hook variety, I have many Carabiners!!!! (Hook with a gate) LOL
@@ScoutCrafter that means that it's about time for stocking up!!!
😅😅😁😁
LOL- New Balance are quality shoes but I wear them because they come in WIDE widths... 😃👍
LOL
Just think what is missed by not having served in the military. All the fun and camaraderie. Have a great weekend!
You are so right Mark!
@@ScoutCrafter Sounds like you have the same problem as me! Thanks John
Great story at the end..Are you sure you didn’t grow up in Birmingham. You would fit right in.
Figure 8.... that is our most used LIFE SAFETY KNOT on my Fire Department.... Figure 8 follow Though, and Figure 8 on A Bight.... And we do use the trusted Bowline... But the Figure 8 is KING
Love that knot!!! So beautiful too like Yin Yang!
A lot of people start their laces like this. Anyway, here’s a tip for loosening tight knots: bash ’em with a hammer. Works every time.
Don’t go thinking you marines got the market cornered on stuff like the laces and such. Was in the army (3rd batt)! We do the laces the same way, the reason for the bridge on the laces is so they can be cut off easily.
Rangers lead the way!
My Platoon Sgt had his Ranger Tab... Respect!
Saving your shoelaces. LOL I’m not sure if it’s a Marine thing and it’s probably a Boy Scout thing and it’s most definitely a Coast Guard thing. Semper Paratus. “ Always Ready.”
My Buddy was in the coast guard, terrific branch! 😃👍
ScoutCrafter my son was a Marine as well. While watching your video a minute ago he said hey Dad, how do you guys in the army tie your shoe laces? I said I don’t know whichever way we got them from the quartermaster. He said that figures typical Army. LOL
11B!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Queen of Battle!!!
2 Marlin Spikes? Getting ready for prison life?
Shanks! =D
Try switching out to led bulbs. No heat and much brighter
I am slowly transitioning, I did a video on the LED tubes- I like them!! 😃👍
But if you remove the laces how do you attach your old shoes to the telephone line?
Michelle- When I hit 20K subscribers I will tell my story about meeting Arnold Schwarzenegger! Remember the laces...
@@ScoutCrafter It was worth the wait. Great story!
Wow, grinding brand new tools. Are you adding patina next ?
Lottsa WP markings on Craftsman tools.
Love it but it looks like a big ol nail to me too. Good looking haircut John
Once you use one you will be looking for stubborn knots! LOL
John you have packratitis! The good news is it is not hoarding, the bad new there is no cure 😀
Hey Sir , Snap on 5 Piece Pin Punch Set Manufactured in 1998 any commentary about them have a great Journey...
Snap On makes fantastic stuff, I just wish they were more affordable! 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter Not Really Sir Scout This product Are too Expensive In my Place But I'm such a stubborn person I'll stop parties to get them...in atelier the most thing attire my attention in your presentation The laser crafting on steel is it possible?
I love TEKTON tools.
My name is Scoutcrafter....and I'm kind of a hoarder.
L over R on left shoe, R over L on right shoe. Figure 8.
lol send some over your heat over the pond to west of Scotland
man I agree the laser engraving sucks!!!! I love my channel locks but they are all new and laser engraved. Yet my only pair of Knipex pliers is stamped well!
LOL. Did you know you can't buy octo stock anywhere any more. I love octo stock. Thanks Scout, nice job on the spike.
Even McMaster Carr? =D I guess hex stock is just too popular... =D
@@ScoutCrafter even McMaster, no one makes it anymore.

@@rawbacon I did find them, but none in stock and cost a fortune to have made.
I feel better about my shoelace collection.
Sheet bend.
Laces😂😂😂
How do modern marines cope with laces as most kids do not know how to tie shoes any more, Velcro killed laces off. Do they have boots with Velcro? Oh dear you have given away the secret, now you will get infiltrators.
Velcro is for little kids. Any kid over 10 has shoes with laces. Don’t know what kids you’re encountering, Lol.
@@collecter3456 They now do up market sneakers with false laces, look traditional but with velcro.
Tony Papantoniou Ok. I’m just saying most kids still use laces that are old enough for them.
I’m embarrassed to say I just got a pair of Velcro shoes! They were on sale and I thought why not for the shop but I think I screwed up! 😂😂😂
Speaking of laces I have a question for you, Scout, a bit of trivia. "LACES OUT" "The laces were out!" You know what movie this is from?
Ace Ventura!!!!!! =D
👍😎🤠🇺🇸
Check out the TEKTON website, 10% back, free shipping, and their great replacement guarantee.
How about you get a a horse shoe hair cut for your next video? Just kidding
I love those! You need a good shaped skull to pull it off- So I’m out! 😂😂😂🇺🇸
😆😆😆
On Ebay (you know them, right?) no knives, no swords, not allowed anything like that. Marlin spikes (how deadly could they be?) there's plenty for sale. It's not the knives, it's the people holding them, there's the problem.
I swear some lawmakers are nuts, in NYC I can't own a .22 cal rifle that holds more then 5 rounds but a .50 Cal rifle is legal... Nuts I tell you!
