    Always like hearing about your military days. I grew up in Manhattan Kansas that is right next to Fort Riley. Always had a lot of interesting visits with the guys when they were off base. I also save things for future use. I claim it came from being raised by both parents that lived in the depression in Kansas. They didn't throw anything away that might have a use later. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks

    Very good tip about dipping the tool in the water while grinding, I just used to grind until it got red hot and not stop until it was done on some tempered items and now I know why the didn’t hold up very good after I just ruined the temper lol! I won’t do that anymore now thanks so much!

    Recently my wife and I were looking thru some of her late fathers stuff. Some of the items we found were a marlin spike with a leather carrying case, his dog tags and a custom brass belt buckle from 1949 he got in Manilla in the Phillipines . He served in the Navy for 25 years and was out at sea on the U.S.S.Lamson when Pearl Harbor was attacked. My wife's mother was on the base during the attack. After my father in law retired he went to work as a captain of a ferry boat in the Bay Area, and then worked at Travis Air Force Base and later Mare Island Navel Shipyard. He said he loved the Navy because it allowed him to fish all over the world. His rank in the Navy was Chief Boatswain's Mate. There was a movie made about WW2 called A American Guerrilla in the Phillipines with Tyrone Power. My father in law was in the movie with a speaking part and my late mother in law took lots of still pictures of the actors when they were not filming and played tennis with Mr. Power.

      @@ScoutCrafter When he worked at Travis and Mare Island he worked in something called salvage and distribution auctioning off no longer needed military surplus items. He was always bringing home neat stuff including lots of para cord for making things. I only knew the man for about 23 years and wished i had learned more about his time in the Pacific during WW2.

    Great story at the end! And here I thought I was the only one that keeps old shoe laces! If they are still in good condition, I keep em. Just like anything else I am finally going to throw away, I have to look it over and decide if there's any good parts to strip before it goes in the trash. If I can think of a possible use for something, I keep it for a while. I just used an old lawn tractor engine I stripped from an old junker twenty years ago. I also scored a radioflyer brand big wheel as a garbage pick. One of the rear wheels was smashed by a car in a garage or driveway I assume. I had kept the plastic wheels from a toy trailer that came with a John Deere power wheels toy I stripped about five years ago. The trailer wheels were a great fit for the radioflyer big wheel and my four year old loves it! Did not cost me anything but about 15min in the shop. Not that time in the shop is a cost to me, it's more like a gift! After a very long day, I just spent about three hours tinkering in the shop and it was easily the highlight of my day!

      @@ScoutCrafter that is so true, but that's why you are so well organized. It is such a struggle for me to keep anything organized in my house/shop/shed because my 10 year old son who I am very glad to see interested in tools and repairing things etc.. is so VERY bad at putting things back where they belong. His room is all the evidence you need of that! I was playing with my four year old this evening. She had marbles and was playing kitchen with them. I noticed in the marbles some of the ones I saved from spray paint cans over the years. I thought I wonder if I am the only one doing that? When I finish a can of spray paint, I use an old can opener to cut open the bottom end and remove the glass marble inside. The paint cleans off the glass easily and you have a small glass ball like a small marble. I thought I was the only one keeping shoe laces, I wonder if I am the only one saving the marbles from spray paint cans. It has been a few years since I had a chance to cut one open. I wonder if the newer cans of spray paint still have glass balls inside?

    Thanks for the story on laces. It’s one I would have asked my dad about since he was in the marines. He died a few years ago due to cancer he got while at LeJune due to the contaminated water. I had a few pairs of his shoes sitting in my closet (we are the same size) that I inherited and I went to look at them. Yup, all tied just the way you described, made me smile...

    I sometimes cut pieces off good leather out of retired shoes, I got the hoarder disease badly... Today I was looking at my axes and remerberd I still need to make them a cover. I always wanted to do that out of one of these shaved pieces of leather. But since you tought me so much about the leather and moisture that didn't seem a good idea anymore. So now I'm thinking about some thick sturdy cloath, like canvas or something that bags are made out of, that can still look real nice I think.. And not have the moisture problem.

    So you take the end of the line on the figure 8 and feed the tail through your carabinier (or leave enough slack to loop it later) then you feed it back through the figure 8 in reverse (there is a "right way" and "wrong way" to do this, it should flow easily, and look "more" symmetrical) and then finish it off with an overhand knot back to the main line. The Double Figure 8! (With safety!) One of my favorite knots! Aside from the Bowline of course! What I really need are the two for when you need to tie a line around a tree! (from a tarp... Or horse...) So that you do the quick release knot to keep the horse safe, but ready to go, and also something to keep the tarp tight, so that as I'm tying the knot doesn't slide all over the place! The other fun knots are the hitch for tying bags closed, and the bow that opens when you pull the strings, and the bow that "tightens" when you pull the strings. (To keep your things "safe" in ancient times! ) plus the snake and diamond :)

    Laser looks nice and lets you get some pretty complicated shapes. The alternative would probably be engraving with a CNC machine (also expensive, I'd guess probably more than stamping from the time it takes). Too bad the durability of the laser isn't so great, but for some light-wear tools it should be fine

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  4 роки тому +1

      Depending on the material you are engraving, plastics and softer material is where lasers shine. The problem with this tool is it was hardened already when Tekton got it and they used the laser on the hard tool steel so it couldn't go very deep. =)

    U S Army does the same thing. I get rid of all the standard laces and use 550 paracord. They are indestructible. Don't use that cheap polyester paracord you can get at a craft store. Use the real thing. Your laces will outlast your sneakers 4 to 1 easily. If the holes are too small on the sneakers you can use your newly made metal marlin spike to open them up a tad.

    I know the Marine trainees at Lympstone not far from where I live are a pain in the backside when on liberty. When I was in the police we would regularly get them misbehaving at the Clubs in Exeter. Easily identified by the haircut and being in a bunch, we would just shove them in the back on a van until we could get the Provost Marshal to come get them. They got in far more trouble with them than they would have done with our courts.

    Don’t go thinking you marines got the market cornered on stuff like the laces and such. Was in the army (3rd batt)! We do the laces the same way, the reason for the bridge on the laces is so they can be cut off easily.

    Scout, do you ever consider stamping the maker and country back on a tool when it gets faint or worn off? I've thought of doing this myself sometimes just to preserve the identity.
    Nothing drives me more nuts then a well made tool crafted in the USA that only has a sticker or some paint as a maker mark, destined to be lost to time.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  4 роки тому +3
