    I've got another reason for you - I want to get rid of grass in my front yard to provide better habitat and shelter for pollinators. Lawns are an ecological disaster. I'm going to provide a refuge for native spieces and make it beautiful at the same time.

    even w/ landscape rock you will have to do some yearly weed control due to dirt that gradually accumulates into the space -- after a long northern winter it takes several weeks to get the yard tweaked before the heat of July sets in - involves a combination of raking, mulching, weeding, reseeding , planting , pruning , edging and cutting grass

      @@BobbyKDesigns what are your thoughts on vine walls? My yard is positioned just right were all sides can see in my back yard, but I'm restricted in fence height. I'm thinking about vine walls on either side of my patio for the sides and a nice fireplace on the side away from the house to block the back.

      may depend on what type of pests you have .....we have a vine that grows on our chimney but it also grew on a section of our back fence which we thought looked okay .....but discovered that snakes thought so too - plus japanese beetles liked it so now I keep it fairly clipped back

    I love your channel! It inspires me a lot. I would appreciate if you can make a video or talk a little bit about having a front yard arch with a climbing plant (rose etc.). I would love to have a flower arch in my front yard, but it gives rustic/farm house look. Can you suggest how to incorporate climbing plants in front yard landscaping? Thank you for amazing work!

      @BobbyKDesigns  2 роки тому +1

      @Vibes360degrees. Thank you so much for watching and the comment! Yes. If you have some dead spots in between windows these are great opportunities for a trellis with a climbing plant. It adds to the front curb appeal and checks off the climbing plant box. Good luck and continue to watch as I DO have a video coming up with this tip.

    I love it. I live in the coatal bend in south texas. Yhe problem here is water restrictions. The city basically says when you can water. There is a lot of water conscious landscape here. We also at times have rolling blackouts, that of course happen at night. I am realizing that water is becoming a issue. I hope we don't have the same happen here as in Arizona. We are definitely in one of the worst droughts l can remember.

    Thanks again for all this great and practical advice with all the examples. It really helps. How do you feel about rubber mulch? My wife and I are going back and forth between regular mulch, rubber mulch, or decorative stone but like you said we don’t want so much DG and stone to make our socal yard bland.

    • @BobbyKDesigns
      @BobbyKDesigns  2 роки тому +2

      @Matt L I’m not too big on rubber mulch unless it’s a very small area. It’s hard to clean out and it does not spread very far and it’s expensive. I think decorative stone with a mixture of real mulch is a better choice.

    Thank you for sharing your videos. I really like the first example in this one! The color and variety of plants got me 😍. We live in Northern Colorado where the cost of water is ridiculous and the extra dry climate makes keeping grass even more ridiculous. My husband and I are looking at options to get rid of most of the grass in the front and side yard and just keeping some in the back for grandkids to have something to play on. Any good suggestions for drought tolerant plants? Any experience with xeriscaping and/or any plans to do a Colorado demonstration?😄

    • @BobbyKDesigns
      @BobbyKDesigns  2 роки тому

      @Muktha there are some really nice synthetic turf options out there nowadays! It looks like really grass. Definitely a great alternative if you can afford it. Synthetic grass isn’t cheap.

    • @mukthatumkur3324
      @mukthatumkur3324 2 роки тому

      @@BobbyKDesigns I know it can be very expensive, and this is something that you need to work with an experienced contractor with. The problem with synthetic turf in a cold climate is that we need to be careful of the sidewalk plows that have a tendency to dig into our lawns after a snow fall all the time (because they can't see the grass under the snow). I would never put this turf on my front yard for that reason, unless it was a street that didn't have any city snow clearing on sidewalks.

    • @BobbyKDesigns
      @BobbyKDesigns  2 роки тому +1

      @Jeremy Meyer thank you Jeremy! If you can use black steel edging it’s a nice option. 2” in the ground and 2” above. It holds back the mulch and is hidden if you keep your grass blades at 3” or more which most people do.

    Hey Bobby! Here in KCMO (whuddup Zone 6B) and I just love your content! Question for ya: I have a rough-edged limestone house - the whole house - and I was thinking about adding in some rock beds, but I fear it’ll look too busy. Do you think I should just stick to black mulched beds as I have, or do you have a recommendation on rock color or type?
    Thanks- you da best!

    • @BobbyKDesigns
      @BobbyKDesigns  2 роки тому +2

      @Maree Gerolymatos. I am a big fan of mulch for its natural look. Decorative stone can be an option but I'd pick something that can play off the house and not be too bland. A multi-colored stone could be a great option. Try looking at Iowa Rainbow Rock online and see if you think it would work.

    Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and insights, Bobby! I hate to say it, but I'm personally not a fan of the mulch beds + boulder/rock combo... I see them all around businesses. Even when they're well-done around cute homes they just look "corporate" to me. (Just my opinion!) I'm leaning towards making about a third of our 1.25 acres into native wildflower meadow. The "cottage" gardens I see online look like a ton a work and seem a bit cluttered (sorry!). So I'm going for something between what you're suggesting here, and what other people share with their flower-ful landscapes. Thanks again for the video! Keep 'em coming!

    I have a little grass left in my yard. I do have a lawn man mow, edge, weed whack, etc. Might I suggest bromeliads around the base of trees in the shady areas, where grass has a hard time growing. Of course this depends like you stated on your planting zones. I do have an area on the right side of my driveway where the grass is terrible. I have had it flowerbeds mostly at one time in that area. I am afraid to have the gross grass taken out because my water lines from the meter to the house are on that side. So I am scared of broken water pipes which happened the last time I hired Palm tree work and sawgrass, and thorny bromeliads removed from that area. It truly is the worst part of the yard and I hate that it is in the front yard. My rose colored glasses do help it look better though.

    • @BobbyKDesigns
      @BobbyKDesigns  2 роки тому +1

      @Nancy Wells I think there any time you can take out an ugly grass area and create a beautiful landscape bed and you are definitely winning! I like the idea bromeliads below the trees if you are in that zone. Thank you for the comment as always!

    4th reason - grass is inert and does not support the same quantity of native wildlife that your local shrubs and perennials do. Bonus: if you put a native plant in an environment it likes, once they're established, you basically have zero work to do - except maybe take some out, if they get too frisky.
