    i woke up this morning and thought "i'm going to shoot eye level 360 today, that should be perfect" ... then i found your video for the 2nd or 3rd time and watched. this is a great tutorial , with a A LOT OF WORK put into it. 1st shot, showing 360 cam and u, 2nd show with VR and 360 footage and you , 3rd etc... man that is a LOT of work and editing to make it come together for this youtube vid. great job, and i really appreciate how much effort and TIME it takes to make multiple shots, with multiple angles, work. thanks !

    Could this new approach to 360 camera composition be better than one of the most commonly used 360 camera techniques -- shooting at eye level? Let me know what YOU think!

    • @JohanLundberg
      @JohanLundberg 3 роки тому +1

      Wouldn't call this new, but you explained it nice. Another way to think is to place the camera in the middle of what you want to be in focus. I think you would get roughly the same heights on the camera.

      @@JohanLundberg thanks Johan. The tricky part is deciding what to focus on. If we want the head to be emphasized how do we determine what we should want to focus on? It is tricky because there is no one right answer - it depends on the distance.

      @@360vroomers True. But then you can also get into all the portrait prefrences and how we normaly potraits persons with different features and how that translates into 360 ;) It's like they always say, first know the rules and then break them. Hi sandi. When you say "set instantly," do you mean stitched in-camera? If that is what you mean, then any Ricoh Theta camera can stitch 360 photos instantly. For tight budget, the best one in my opinion is Xiaomi Mi Sphere. But it does not stitch photos in-camera. You have to stitch them using Mi Sphere Camera app for phone or desktop.

    I love the topic. It is definitely smth I've struggled with. Thanks for this experiment. But I think it looks the best when shot eye level but on the reframing step the software should allow us to crop differently to remove more of the top portion. Current apps don't allow this. I've seen a pro editor from GoPro showed possibly custom software where he said he asked GoPro people to create a feature in a plugin for Adobe Premiere to allow this kind of crop. I don't think it exists in official plugin version though. So your idea is a great alternative composition wise, but I don't think that it looks too good because it is like you're looking down at the camera from the top. Just my opinion. Love your work. Cheers!

    You start out viewing in VR saying not to shoot too high or low. Then you switch to reframing. If shooting for VR viewing do the same distance/height rules apply?

    • @360vroomers
      @360vroomers  3 роки тому

      Hi Doug. That is exactly right. The eye level rule works when the photo or video will be viewed in a VR headset. (DO use eye level rule if shooting for VR viewing) But when the photo or video is viewed in a phone or laptop, then the eye level rule resulrs in a shot that is too high, so instead we use the rule of thirds for 360.

    If you want a person to look natural, then their head should be the same distance above the camera as their feet are below it.
    Too high and you get big head / little feet, too low and you get big feet / little head.
    If you are only shooting your torso (camera closer), then the same rule applies, the camera should be the mid point of what's in frame to look natural.

    • @360vroomers
      @360vroomers  3 роки тому

      Thanks Iain. Great question. Yes field of view is another factor. As you know a 360 photo or video has an extremely wide range of possible FOVs. Some of those could put the head into or out of the rule of thirds. Having said that, the guidelines I provided here are based on the default FOV levels, which are remarkably similar across different software (e.g. Insta360 Studio, GoPro VR Player, PTGui viewer, etc.). At the default FOV levels, the head will be at the upper line of the Rule of 3rds. Try it and see :D
