- Whitianga is a town on the Coromandel Peninsula, in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. The town is located on Mercury Bay, on the northeastern coast of the peninsula. The town has a permanent population of 6,440 as of June 2023, making it the second-largest town on the Coromandel Peninsula behind Thames. (Wikipedia)
Whitianga is located on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula, 191 km (119 mi) from Auckland , 93 km (58 mi) from Thames, 42 km (26 mi) from Tairua. It is situated on the coast of Mercury Bay along the 5 km (3 mi) long east-facing Buffalo Beach. The town centre is at the southern end of the beach. (Wikipedia)

Very popular as a holiday destination especially for Aucklanders who like boating, fishing, beaches and outdoor activities. The population swells considerably over the summer and over long weekends. Small town with all the features. It can be considered as a retirement village (town). 😂😂😂 I found one small Chinese takeaway only. But do have a few big western restaurants. 😊😊😊
Hi, yes it was unusual to see only one Chinese takeaway because Europeans like Chinese food although I think a lot of these small traders took a beating over covid and do struggle in the off-season. There was one Thai but I thought their food was pretty ordinary and overpriced , the other restaurants are definitely pitching towards the older western customers .
Wonderful tour Chris! Charming old cottages and beach vibe. Looks like a great place to vacation, or retire! I loved seeing the Oystercatchers in the surf- we have a similar variety here… love their long orange beaks. Enjoyed the video- great music selection! 👌💙💙
Hi Jennifer, definitely a cool place to holiday , especially in the off-season and there are certainly plenty of retirees in the general area if the grey hair in the supermarket is anything to go by 😀, I was there with my wife and her folks (86 and 92) so certainly contributing to the grey !!
Oh I so love the Coromadel. Not had the opportunity to visit this time- did miss that. Love this wee peek at Whitianga. Well worth one's time to visit. 👌🇳🇱🙋♀🥝

Hi Chrus this is a very beautiful town, so nice to see palm trees as you drove and the mountains in the distance. I loved the wooden cottages and seeing the sea and birds :) ~ Anna 👍

Marvelous! I bet even those 100 year old cottages are rather pricey. Sure do enjoy a shoreline location!
Hi, probably , I suspect they never come on the open market, just sold word of mouth or passed down through families like a lot of holiday homes. I had a look on the local RealEstate site and there is nothing of that sort for sale . An ordinary home there seems to average out at around C$750,000 (realestate in NZ is stupid expensive.)
What a nice and relaxing trip along the coast, I completely was carried away by the scenery with these lovely old houses along the road, ocean and palmtrees and that typical isle music❤🌴🌴🧉

Incredible destination, I can see why it's a popular vacation spot. I like seeing all the palms as you are driving, wow! Nice place to feature on your channel. 🌴🌴🌴👍👍Oyster Catchers in the surf.
Hi, glad you liked the tour. Whitianga definitely has a tropical look and a very laid-back feel especially in the off season (winter) , as a local I quite like visiting places like this away from the holiday season you get more of a feel for how it is as a local. It was gold, Kauri gum and logging the native trees that brought prosperity to the Coromandel initially now its tourism and deep sea fish as you will have seen with all the boats 😀

@@JenniferLupine glad you like the quick look at one of NZ’s older coastal towns and of course these days an incredibly popular holiday spot. Back in my flatting days (the 70’s) we , my flatmates and I would come over here with our tents for a very affordable break from Auckland!! Although fair to say it’s a lot more trendy now than it was back then 😀
