There is a great deal of confusion about this tune name. In some hymnals, it is called "Schonster Herr Jesu", "St. Elisabeth", or "Crusader Hymn". The source is given as a Silesian melody published in 1842. But it is not this tune. In our new Anglican hymnal, the tune you are playing is named "Schonster Herr Jesu". The source is the same as you have above. In the Hymnal 1940, it is called "Fairest Lord Jesus", and there is no tune called "Schonster Herr Jesu". Such is the world of hymn tunes. Thank you, Andrew, for posting this hymn the way you did. You saved me a lot of time, as this came up first in my search. The others giving me the Silesian tune.

I think we often forget how difficult it was to get information in the pre-interweb age. If you go back to the 19th and early 20th century you only knew what was in a book you actually owned. And if that book had any mis-information in it you just passed it on completely ignorant of the truth. I often find hymn tunes mislabeled and authors misidentified in these late 19th and early 20th century hymnals. Hymnary has saved me many times.

Rockingham is a perfect example. Both version will label themselves as "New" and the other "Old."
