An often overlooked job, brake fluid should be changed every two years as it’s hydroscopic (absorbs moisture) lowering its boiling point which can lead to loss of braking.
You don't need to keep opening and closing the brake nipple when bleeding the brakes, you just need keep your finger lightly on the end of the tube and just pump the pedal a few times.
Bleeding brakes is so much easier if you can use a pressure or suction method . I use a Gunson easibleed which comes with various temporary replacement master cylinder caps , each with an air connection pipe . The air tube supplied goes on to your spare tire . The air pressure will push the fluid through the brake system without anyone pushing and releasing the brake pedal . So one person can bleed the brakes , so long as the master cylinder is kept filled above minimum to stop new air entering . Do make sure to choose the correct temporary master cylinder though .....ask how I know ! It does make a corrosive mess if you choose the wrong lid !!! Other kits are out there which suck fluid through , but the manual method really SUCKS !
They do a pressurisation system so it pushes it through, if you pump it with the bleed nipple open, it will suck air in as you release the peddle, so you need to close before releasing and open when the pressure is on it
Yeah and most people think it’s me but it’s hundred percent all Becky I was as surprised when i started to edit the video should see what I had to cut out lol 😜 😂🤣😂
Nice work on the brakes Mel! Gotta admit I was worried when Becky was saying that the brake pedal started feeling easier to press. D: With the engine off it should be rock-hard. Might be worth getting a one-person brake bleeder to save Becky's legs, they can be had really cheap these days! Looks like all four wheels could do with a good bleed based on the colour of that fluid! _You don't need a pressurized one, just one with a one-way valve so you only have to pump until you're happy then tighten the nipple_
The brakes will still have air in the lines as you didn't put the tube from the calliper nipple into the brake fluid in the jar so it would suck air back into the brake lines instead of bubbling the old fluid in the jar, Might want to go back and revisit the job now you've freed off the compensator.
@@BigVanSmallWorld Mel, I'm not being an assh**** I just want you to have properly functioning brakes, your gonna be pulling some weight when the vans is finished and loaded and there will be air in those lines the way you did it just be safe and rebleed them properly before you hit the road
Just to correct u that valve is a load Monitor valve how they work is not as u said the more weight the vehicle has on board more pressure is applied to rear brake the lighter the load less pressure goes to rear this is to stop rear brakes locking when braking hard hope that makes sense nice old buss when she’s finished
Hi Mel hope your well, can I ask I noticed you did a video on installing a all-in-one diesel heater in a van, I have a 2006 Citroen Berlingo 19 Diesel van and there isn't much room under the van to accommodate the exhaust and air pipe etc, so the only way I'm going to be able to have a diesel heater is an all in one, has the one you fitted for your friend been ok. ?
That old girl might be old but it's engineering is far better than today's rubbish and the engine will go forever as long as you basic service it. Becky's pumping was a delightful.
Hey Mel and Becky, the question is did Butterfly pass or not ??? And another question, do you have any excuse power banks for your #1 fan and his caravan, oh and Becky really did put everything into helping with the brakes, literally everything 😂😂😂, and the best and safe travels #1
Nice! No brakes can be scary! I once drove home from work with nothing but a hand break ... needless to say by the time I got home the hand break was toast too! I'm interested in seeing how strict your MOT is compared to the state inspection we have here in New Hampshire USA. My wife wants to move back to her home in Scotland when we retire (hopefully in 5 years) and I am just about done with my van build. I'm not too keen on selling this van and starting all over when we get over there. We've done the research and it will cost like three to four grand to ship the van to the UK but I don't want to spend all that money and then have the damn thing not pass it's MOT!!
The mot is nothing more than a safety test to make sure that your vehicle is road worthy it’s mandatory here in the UK checking things like lighting Breaks tyers seatbelts suspension etc it’s nothing really to worry about if a vehicle falls it’s usually a good thing that the defective parts have been spotted if you have put a lot of work into building out your van and it’s got plenty of life life in it I’d say shipping it would definitely be worth it
Mel love watching your vids but not wen I keep getting ones saying join for money , mel Times r hard as it is for everyone, . But if I carnt watch you or your vids if I've got to pay to see you and your vids so be it mel. BUT I DO LOVE WATCHING your vids so much mel.

it is not illegal to film and drive....its only illegal if its stopping you from driving in a good manor ....only illegal if the camera/phone is in your hand whilst driving
Hi Mel, It’s not actually illegal per se to film while driving. If it’s in a mount and your not fiddling with buttons. An officer could try to argue that it’s causing a distraction but i don’t believe that would wash unless you’re prioritising the camera and distracted from focussing on the road. Footage could be used in evidence to determine that but filming while driving is fine. Plenty of driving instructors do it while they themselves drive. Filming from a phone in your hand is very much illegal but that is a difference offence. In 2022 the law changed. “The new law will amend the 1986 Regulations and will mean the offence is triggered whenever a driver holds and uses a device, regardless of why they are holding it (Parlaiment UK, 2024). Prior to that only using it for calls and interaction whilst in hand was it illegal. Filming (WHEN HOLDING IT) is now illegal. Otherwise an inward facing dash cam would be illegal :)

An often overlooked job, brake fluid should be changed every two years as it’s hydroscopic (absorbs moisture) lowering its boiling point which can lead to loss of braking.
WD-40 is a solvent not a lubricant (despite what it says in the tin). It can never replace oil/grease etc.

you can get the ones that can top off the master cylinder as the fluid is used up , the one I have has a storage for a few ltrs of brake fluid
They do a pressurisation system so it pushes it through, if you pump it with the bleed nipple open, it will suck air in as you release the peddle, so you need to close before releasing and open when the pressure is on it

@@du7ch384 it wont suck air in if he closes the valve before letting the pedal up.
Not true the pipe has a slit in and will only allow fluid out, preventing air going back up the pipe ,that’s what they are made & designed for .
I got a wee none return valve for the end of the bleed hose, as I am doing the job on my own some of the time.

Wow, thanks that’s very kind of you to say 😂👍🍻
The best way to stop it rolling off the drive is to keep it in gear Mel that will be alot safer if your working under neath the van buddy ❤❤
a differential and one wheel off the ground won't stop it rolling off a jack

Won’t be long before you get back to get it MOT lovely good work

Good work but WD-40 displaces water. It does help unseize however, after using it grease, oil or similar the part. As the WD 40 dries out.
Thanks for the tip your spot on 👍🍻👍

Correct and when you brake all the weigh shifts to the front less weight on the rear less pressure goes to the rear brakes it’s not rocket science
