I wouldn't call it a superpower, but I am extremely stubborn and don't give up. I could not knit for 20 years because of a stroke, just tried again this year, and I have not stopped. I am working on a baby blanket which I have frogged and re-started at LEAST 12 times, and have finally reached the point where I am going full steam ahead (slowly). I was afraid this coming baby would be as old as I am before I ever finished! I have learned more in this one project than I EVER knew 20 years ago. So, I guess being a hard-headed crone is my super power, such as it is.
I similarly lost a lot of my mobility around 2 years ago. I am know at a point where my arms and hands can function well enough to knit, although it looks a little different than before. The fatigue is challenging because I just want to push through it, but like you said, taking it slow is the way. Here's to being stubborn!

My superpower wasn't even mentioned! I am a queen when it comes to finding a purpose for any ball of yarn, even bits and scraps (and i mean not only scappy projects). Sadly it takes a while working it up anyway. A ball of sock yarn for example has this life: sock - coziest memories blanket - yarn cozy when special to me / shorties pair if someone requested - Granny square blanket when blue until finished / dk-c2c crochet blanket when not blue until finished. Takes me between a week and a month.
All of my friends and family therefor gift me with leftover yarn when they come across them. My grandma doesn't enjoy making scrappy things so everytime i see her i get all of her leftovers. A person from a church organization group i know asked if i would take the yarn she took from her shortly died mother, because she can't knit or crochet. The cousin from my grandfather gifted me with her leftovers, because she isn't cabable of knitting anymore. And for some reason my aunt gifts me every year on my birthday a seemingly random single ball of yarn in various weights, which is quite difficult to convert into anything. But i've made blankets, pillow cases, towels, dishcloths, scrubbies, shoes, shawls, hand warmers, socks, wall hangings, christmas tree ornaments, small bags and pouches, cozies for all sorts of things and various clothes stuff from yarn in my stash. If possible i gift it back to the person who gave me the yarn (unless it is too pretty, then i am a selfish brat). I almost never use patterns but come up with them as i go, so i can't do anything wrong😂
I never finish anything… so my superpower is making a REALLY BIG UFO pile. Current Status: 48 UFOs.

We probably all share a knitting superpower: I bet we have all taught someone else to knit, or helped them when they’re stuck or encouraged them to give knitting a try 🎉
This is may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't mind having a lingering WIP or two! I actually just picked up a lingering WIP that was leftover from the end of last summer and it's like a new project that has a huge head start, AND I like it more now than when I put it down!
That's a great way to think about it! Sometimes you just need a break from a project to enjoy it again!
My superpower might seem counterintuitive, but I am SO used to making mistakes with every project that I've gotten really good at frogging things... its no longer a hassle and is actually relaxing and almost expected for me at this point 😂. But I really think it is a superpower because I find that I learn something valuable with every project... without making mistakes, you can never learn from them, right?

I'm curious, does this mean you are comfortable forgoing a gauge swatch and just using the start of your project as a "swatch" and frogging back if it's wrong? I'm tempted to start doing it this way because frogging is less annoying to me than doing gauge swatches most of the time😆

My high-school math teacher once told the class: "The worst thing you can do is get it right the first time; because then you haven't learned anything."
I'm a left-handed knitter and crocheter. I had to teach myself how to read patterns and learn tutorials in reverse (especially garments). There's not a lot of instruction out there on how to do it. This is especially true for knitting because some people will call Continental knitting left-handed whereas I am knitting Continental left-handed (yarn is in my right hand but I'm knitting from left to right). I am left-hand dominant so I've grown up my whole life having to do stuff like this.
I have a video on my UA-cam channel about reading patterns in reverse for left-handed crocheters.

This was one of my favorite videos. It really made me feel like I was part of a very talented community.
Because I knit hats for charity, I have become relatively quick at it. It's a knit 2, purl 2 ribbing. I can make 1 a day so it frustrates me when I get interrupted. Oh, btw, I'm 72 years old, retired, live in an RV and mostly use #4 weight yarn for hats that go to the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Erie, PA. I live in Florida, down the street from Four Purls Yarn Shop that makes the Emma Yarns. Hats for the homeless here is made with #3 weight yarn. Most yarn is donated to me for my charities. Love you and your podcast.

Four Purls is my favorite LYS in Florida. It is my go-to, but is not near (I'm about an hour away). I have been thinking about what I'm going to do with my knitting and crocheting desire once I make all the projects for people around me that I want to. You know... one can only own so many shawls.
OMG! you knit and live in an RV! lol I'm 68, living in New Mexico and I also knit and live in an RV. I have no lys closer than 2 hours away. I buy online mostly. When I was making the twists and turns shawl, I stressed out my muscles in my thumb and my ring finger. It's slowly getting better and I've had to cut back on my knitting, but I learned a big lesson - knitting for hours and hours days at a time with small needles is hard on your hands. Now I try to have at least one project on larger needles so I can switch them around. I have a friend I donate yarn to occasionally. She's on a very limited income and likes to knit but can't often afford yarn. I have often thought of knitting hats for the homeless or for the VA home we have here or shawls. I'll have to look into that. Good to know there are others out there who live the lifestyle we do.
My mother taught me as a lefty. I’m a righty and never realized that I was knitting lefty until a few years back. I had to find out the hard way and now knit right handed and still find myself casting on lefty.
I can knit complicated lace while watching a show either in french (my native language) or in English and mostly without subtitles. And I can knit as I'm tipsy 🥴
Wow! I didn’t realize that I have some of these super powers like picking out colors, embracing weaving in ends, being a professional “ripper upper”. A super power I’m working on STILL is knitting without looking. Fun episode, Natalie!
Don't worry about becoming a mom and still being a knitter. When it's something you love, you'll always find time to do it. I have 2 very young children and I've definately knit with them asleep in my arms/lap 😂. I knit after they're asleep (with a neck light) and I've recently started to work on socks or an easy hat while carying the baby on my back and playing with the todler outside. Where there's a will there's a way 😅
Yes! I run an in home daycare and watch 6 kids. I still find time to knit
I have teenagers and spend a lot of time driving them places. I keep a knitting project in the car so when I'm waiting on them I can do a few minutes work on a hat or socks.
Plenty of knitting with kids even as babies I would knit while feeding or snuggling with the help of a boppy pillow and also baby wearing and as they got older it got even easier to fit knitting in. Now they’re teens so there’s plenty of knitting time especially while waiting in the car for them for pick up, drop off, dentist/dr appointments etc I call it taxi mom knitting 😂
I have just discovered the wonder of double winding yarn. It takes out the twist that the initial winding put in, and makes for a MUCH fluffier yarn cake.
Knitting while holding my 2 month old is a superpower I didn’t know I had until becoming a mom this year lol. I even managed to work on my brioche project without any issues! 😂

I knit while riding my horse. I have a big that hangs on the front of my saddle and I knit socks while we are riding. Unless it’s a super difficult trail, I can be found with yarn in my hands

My dad osmosis a knitter or fiber artist of any kind but he makes a fantastic yarn swift! He makes the movement look so graceful and almost balletic.

I recently restarted the alpenglow after finishing the body and tubular bind off. It was painful ripping it out but it was way too small and the yarn is so special that I couldn’t wait to restart. It’s coming out way better and I’m so happy.

I knit more when my kids were young. Lots of color works, Scandinavian, Icelandic, Aran knits. I do think it has to do with organization and also knitting when waiting for kids to finish sports and/or music lessons.
Another superpower is figuring out almost any knitting pattern just by looking at pictures! As long as the pictures are clear enough I can manage.
I had a friend with 3 little grandies. Twins & a single birth. She'd make 3 cardigans at a time. 3 backs, 3 lefts, 3 rights, 6 sleeves. I could understand the twins but the other being a size up, I was like wow.
So fun hearing about everyone´s super powers! I would say mine is staying commited to my 2023 temperature blanket. I´ve consistently knit my daily row so far.
Knitting in church ⛪️ and still participating. I always check with the pastor and they have always said they didn’t notice and don’t mind.
The subtitles thing! I've read/watched the same, or a very similar, article/video as your mom. The person had mention a number of reasons why more people are using them, ranging from how many actors speak now (some hugely lack enunciation, as apparently this makes speech more realistic vs talking with any amount of clarity🙄), the loudness of music has greatly increased (some producers know people don't like this, but refuse to make it better because they're children having tantrums, I suppose, and THAT'S HOW THEY WSNT IT TO BE SO THERE 😝), and sound effects also blasting over speech. As someone who became hard of hearing in my late 30s, I have trouble understanding much of anything without subtitles on in a lot of newer movies, especially. Hollywood needs to do better on that, because if people aren't enjoying the cinematic experience because they can't understand the speech, they're going to stop going.
I have no talents, unless you count being able to calmly untangle yarn barf.
I cannot stand when the music is too loud!! Haha untangling yarn barf is definitely a talent!
I like knitting sleeves at the same time, like I do my socks. Helps me keep them even.

Love the editing of this video with all the superpower stuff! I guess my superpower is having learn to knit only using You Tube videos. People seem always to think it's not possible, but it is!
I never thought of it as a super power but since you mentioned it, I can knit both continental and English not just been doing color work. I actually was taught to knit English style and was never real thrilled about it. Then years later, I saw someone knitting, continental, and re-taught myself to knit continental. I had been crocheting for years, and I realized how much more intuitive it is for a crocheter to knit Continental. I would consider my Crochet superpower that I Crochet pencil style. I see so many people who say they just don’t understand how anyone can do that and that’s how I taught myself and that’s how I do it. 🤗
My superpower is being fearless with new projects.
I was 4 months into knitting when I joined the 2021 MKAL Shawlography. I finished it in September of 2022 (after 2 moves and several other delays). I have also tried cables - they are still magic to me- some 2 color colorwork, German short rows, socks with multiple variations and heels, and lace patterns. My feeling is that if the project does not work out, I can frog it after having learned something. Knitting has become an almost meditative process for me. I'm learning how to knit without looking now, thanks to you and Kristen Lehrer (sp).
My sister got covid while visiting with her 7-week-old a couple months ago, so I had a whole lot of auntie-nibling time with him cradled in my off-hand arm while I was working on crocheting a cardigan for a different nibling 😁
I don't think I have a crochet super power, but I was very adventurous with the patterns I chose as a beginner, which made me learn advanced stuff really quickly!
Edit: yes, the sweater curse is also a thing for crocheters!

I also love weaving in ends! That’s because it feels like the start of a new project. I collect all of my ends and then stuff them into clear ornaments for my knitting Christmas tree! So weaving in ends feels like I get more supplies for an ongoing project I love
I am a true lefty and I knit Continental knitter.
I'm a lefty who knits "true" left-handed. I learned when I was 13 from a left-handed person. I originally learned to knit English but taught myself Continental, Norwegian purling and Backwards (mirror) knitting. One of these days I'll learn Portuguese and Lever knitting.
Well, that was a revelation. Both of my Grandmas were right-handed and knit from left to right. My Mum is left handed and knits from left to right. I am left handed and knit from left to right. Up until this point I had just presumed everybody knit from left to right! It all seemed so natural and now you're telling me that I do have to make changes depending on how I want to increase/decrease. Man, my bubble has been burst. Life as a left hander is difficult, knitting seemed like the perfect 'I don't have to adapt anything for dexterity' hobby.
Aww I'm sorry! If it makes you feel better, I know two lefties who knit beautifully from patterns and make the swaps needed. Patterns with charts (in the round) are written right to left, but you can reverse them quite easily!
Hello. My superpower I think is teaching knit and crochet to right AND left handers. You don't have to change anything. Has it been working for you? And the finished project looks right? That is what counts. By the way I have taught left handed people since 1969. I am right handed myself.
Hmmm.... I've gone looking at other YT videos and now I'm convinced that I've misunderstood.
What I'm working from is in my left hand, and new stitches/the worked row appears on the right needle.
The videos I've watched seemed to suggest that that's right-handed. Their active hand was the left hand, whereas mine is my right. For me it's so intuitive to work onto the right needle.
Maybe this is all just a lesson in methods of knitting being passed down the generations - handedness aside!
@@jackieholifield4239 My finished projects have the shape that they're meant to have. Socks look like socks and they fit. I think that any mistakes have nothing to do with increases/decreases! That said, I am yet to attempt a hat or a sweater/pullover...
I also love knitting while reading, watching a film at the cinema or talking with friends and family (as long as it’s stockinette or ribbing I‘m fine!) 🩷

Hello from St.Louis Missouri. My superpower is I can knit in my sleep, especially if I am knitting in the round. My daughter video me sleeping and still knitting because she couldn’t believe that I was sleep. Never missed a stitch.
My superpower must be that I knit both continental and English style and can do both while reading, in the dark and walking...
I love to untangle yarn... to me it's just so relaxing and satisfying to take a huge mess of yarn and wind it into a ball.
When I saw the title of your episode, I thought, "I don't have any superpowers." I guess I do. I knit socks two-at-a-time toe-up. It's just how I do it, no big deal. Several years ago before I even knew it was a thing, I taught myself mirror knitting because I was knitting something big and it was convenient. Again, no big deal. Maybe that is my real superpower, I'm not afraid to try anything, after all, it is all knitting.
I think knitting in general is a super power, I just got my needles from knit picks the other day and I tried to knit by watching UA-cam and OMG it is sooo hard. And then purl haha. I am going to keep going and trying in between crocheting but wow it is hard. I had high hopes, I’ll see what happens😊
I don’t have any superpowers 😂 however, my grandmother was a very fast knitter and just twisted her finger and the yarn went around the needle. Mum and sister also knitted this way. I lift my hand from the needle to wrap the yarn around the needle. My nan once said why don’t you knit like us, it’s much faster? My mum bless her said, she does it how it works for her so why change? 😂 Nan agreed, if it works for you why change. My sister hasn’t knitted anything for about 30 years, I’ve been her support person as she is knitting a neck down sweater/jumper. I’ve helped her every step of the way.
I'm flattered you think I have a super power! (identifying crochet stitches from a picture) - It comes from many manyyyyy hours on pinterest looking at patterns and inspo! But you're right, every time I see a hat or a sweater in store, I always think I should make one for myself instead of buying it (but I never do).
I also love weaving in ends and I enjoy seaming. But, Like you, I do NOT enjoy socks two at a time.
Agree no two at a time for me either as it just drives me crazy to have two working yarn ends. I don’t even like knitting with two yarns held double.
My super power is I can knit and crochet while being really sick 😅 I’ve been a sickly person since I was an infant so it doesn’t bother me that when I do get sick I jusy do both and relax 😊

Translating western knitting into combination knitting on the fly. I'm from Bolivia and learned combination knitting there without even knowing it. I only found that out last year and it solves the mystery of why women in my family always struggled to follow patterns (their stitches would end up getting twisted sometimes but not always). It's different to adjust patterns to combination knitting when you're knitting flat than in the round so it can be a bit of a mind bending exercise but I refuse to give it up altogether since it is the most comfortable for me.
I’ve only been knitting a couple of years but my super power is never thinking ‘I can’t do that!’ I’ll give it a go, I may even put it down in frustration and not talk to it again but I don’t let others wealth of experience intimidate me.
Also…. Sock madness 17 is in full swing - I was knocked out this round but the skills I’ve learned and patterns I’ve been granted access to through this free competition are amazing

Don’t worry about having time to knit if you ever decide to have kids. I learned how to knit BECAUSE I had my daughter! I needed something to keep my hands busy at night when I watched TV so that I wouldn’t snack (needed to lose my baby weight 😅). I’ve been knitting off and on for 19 years now!
I can knit English style (my preferred method) I can also knit continental, and Portuguese style. I learned because of some injuries I had but wanted to keep knitting.

I think I am becoming a blanket machine. Family and friends are loving the bulky acrylic blankets I make. I am not particularly fast but I am consistent. 30 for 30 has helped with that too.
So far I have never repeated a color scheme. I am saving my scraps to make myself a scrappy blanket that will remind me of all the blankets that it relates to.
OMG Mirror knitting! I didn't know this was a thing! I did this from my 10th to my 17th, when I was just knitting (literally just knitting, not making finished objects, but everythime I saw a nice color of acrylic yarn, I bought it, casted on a few stitches and just knitted the yarn😂) I loved it and after all the years of rib, I wanted to do stockinette, but didn't research how to do it (I had done it in the round on my first hat, but that was with my teacher next to me🥰), but I learned myself doing mirror knitting! It gave a beautifull result and I was very proud of it. But since my 17th I wanted to knit things that are more sustainble and that I could use, and I knit mostly in the round now, so no more use for mirror knitting. But maybe I'll make a swatch from leftovers soon, just for the fun of it!
Hi Natalie! I do the same when knitting, I pull a lot of yarn out and then start knitting and repeat the process. It does make me efficient. I have been doing this for years. I started this when I was taught to crochet by my grandmother when I was little 😊
I love competition knitting. Well knitting, crochet, and sewing competitions. It forces me to challenge myself and learn new things in my hobby. I do competition planning for the year in Desember, and most of those end up as gifts or charity
I’m also in the camp of super-intuitive technique learners! I’m self-taught in all my yarn/fiber skills, and most of them came super easy to me. I absolutely love learning new stitches and techniques.
i recenlty learned how to norwegian purl and it has made ribbing so much easier for me :)
I really enjoyed this video! I’m a left handed crocheter and I figured out that I have to read charts the other way when my tapestry project with letters was coming out backwards 😂
I think more designers should include notes for left handed makers if it’s important to adapt or read the pattern differently.
I would like to learn how to knit though. Does anyone have some good recommendations on how to learn knit as a leftie?
I was one of the people who loves sleeves! You can see the inches go by so much faster than the body so it's very rewarding for me even if they take a while.

I can knit in the dark and have fallen asleep and hubby has seen my hands still knitting! Freaked him out lol I am also pretty darn good at untangling yarn barf!
I have been de-stashing 8ply acrylic one colour at a time & since 24th June 2022 I've C2C crocheted 6 small dog blankets, 1 large dog blanket & a single blanket. Plus 6 large lap blankets (fit on top a queen bed but without overhang). One crochet cabled blanket. Seven crochet snowmen (wrote pattern) & gifted for Christmas. Plus 1/2 of Stephen West shawl & some advent knitting. Plus around 6 crochet hats for donations.
I love knitting sleeves because I can feel the anticipation of being nearly done, and the rows go by so quick... also sleeve sizes don't go up proportionally with chest circumference so if you're knitting a larger size, the sleeves are much less of the project
I knew exactly what you were going to say about the entrelac scarf before you said it. And oh yes, i made a few of those. My super power is that i can use every scrap of yarn. I will use the same yarn in several scrappy projects until it's gone.

My knitting super power is speed. I average 56.4 stitches a minute. I just calculated four rows of 282 stitches - 1,128 total - and it took 20 minutes. Continental is a life saver!
Apparently my super power is gift knitting as my stats show me that from year to year between 13-20% of my finished objects were actually for me. I must love doing it despite my yearly intention of making more for myself. Well there’s still opportunity this year!

I learned how to knit backwards (unintentionally). I knit right to left, but turn my yarn clockwise. It means that I have to reverse some stitches (my ssk looks like a k2tog) but it makes doing twisted stitches both front and back so much easier! Also, I never feel guilt about knitting. I have WIPs that are years old that I am excited to finish… someday. 😅
My super power is finding a purpose for yarn that has been gifted to me from departed family and friends. Whether it is repurposed for mementos for the family or knitted or crocheted into items for various charities, I feel like the deceased is happy that their stash was put to good use.
Oh, you should totally time yourself for a project you make a lot, like a Musselburgh hat! Someone asked me for a pair of socks once and suggested $$ that actually sounded reasonable...so I timed myself and a pair of socks takes me 10 hrs.
I feel like my super power is being able to fix knitting mistakes, even when I don't know what I did wrong and how I fixed it. 😅
I believe my superpower is math, I never get gauge but I can always get the right size via proportions.
Also, sock madness is a march to june speed "competition" hosted on raverly, but it's basically just a KAL of really complicated socks, where everyone gets the patterns and not only the winners. The last round is usually insane, they knit a pair of (definitely not vanilla) socks in less than 24 hours

Great video! I think I have a couple super powers. One of my big ones is probably my ability to understand how knitting works. It sounds sort of weird, but I have a really great understanding of how the stiches fit together, which makes it really easy to fix mistakes and learn new techniques.
My other superpower is a crochet one. I can crochet both left handed and right handed! I'm right handed, but taught myself to crochet using my left hand a couple months ago, so I can do short rows on projects worked in the round without it looking weird. I alternate right handed and left handed rows, so my flat crocheting looks pretty much the same as my in the round crocheting. I'm very proud of it!

1 keeping my stash under control. I generally only have the yarn I'm using for projects and scraps which either have a plan for or I have a scrap project underway.

It's refreshing that you are not super fast! I tried to learn continental and I was woefully incompetent, so I'll stick with English and be doomed to be slower. Enjoy the process.
Oh yeah I'm not fast in a stitches per inch way! And you know what, I bet you'll knit more (and therefore "faster") when you're knitting a way you're comfortable with!

I have absolutely no clue what woefully means, but this combination stood out to me as describing beautifully worded that one can't do something specific. Me too! I say “I’m older, slower and an English Thrower” 🤣 I feel blessed I can knit at any speed, so I’m not concerned about how fast that might be.

Entraloc got me to teach myself knitting and purling back without turning the work too. So now that’s what I do for my heals on socks (2 at a time gal on that too) and shawls. Love this topic so fun.
My superpower is that I am left-handed, but I knit right-handed. I am a combination knitter, when working flat, I am a thrower in one direction and a picker in the other. So I never turn my work. I am working on the JiJi Cardi by Knitatude.
I easily knit continental, english or irish and I also knit 2 socks at a time on circular needles, toe up with no sewn seams. Not a true superpower but muscle memory from years of practice, along with consistent tension. Yet, I am not advanced enough to not at least glance at my knitting lol ^_^ Some of the people who wrote in might want to be careful haha they might start getting a lot of requests for their superpowers to assist the rest of us! :D
Tip for a long tail cast on, I cast on with a piece that is 24 inches long and knit a section a couple of inches long, noting how many stitches per inch & when I frog I measure how much yarn I used. Then I just multiply that length by how many multiples I need for my cast on row and add 5 inches for a tail. It's been a very reliable method & I haven't had to rework a cast on.
I can pick up new techniques really quickly whether it is crochet or knitting!
So you mentioned knitting fast and knitting while reading and conversing as superpowers and I have those, but there was one superpower I have that you didn't mention! I can knit while walking. (In fact, my small project workbag is a convertible shoulder bag/fanny pack just to facilitate knitting and walking!)
Ha ha…I’ve found myself dosing off and continuing to knit.
My super power would be laddering down and fixing cables. I’ve laddered down several inches to fix a 16 stitch wide antler cable pattern when I had only been knitting about a year.
I love sleeve island, it’s like a big sock. I hate body island!
