Chris seems to have forgotten that the current best player in Africa is Nigerian and was discovered in Nigeria. West Africa players leave early for Europe that is why their national teams are better than Southern African teams. If there are teams affected by mentality, it is Southern African national teams because their players are not exposed and experienced at the highest levels of football.
Very true indeed. The 1996 South African team that won the Nations Cup were 98% local based players. They had the talent, but most importantly they had the belief. If Southern African teams can replicate the positive attitude of the Bafana Bafana squad of 1996, they can surprise teams at this year's Nations cup.
hahaha.... You are trying to manage your expectations to avoid heart break! Which major tournament were you most proud of the Super Eagles? and which major tournament did they disappoint you the most?
Kenneth Omeruo was in Nigerias 2013 winning team along with Ahmed Musa...both are captain and deputy captain. The core of Osihmen,Boniface, lheanacho, Chukwueze,Moses Simon, all started from Nigerian youth teams. Iwobi,Lookman,Seyi,Ekong,Calbin Bassey started out with England youths before they joined, they are all veeterans now....Nigeria will shock the doubters, just watch.
I am Nigerian, but I am learning so much from this conversation. National identity is pivotal in competition. I have observed this weakness in this generation of Super Eagles. They all fully identify with Nigeria because of their parents, but some of them do not yet appreciate the Nigerian winning mentality. It is okay to recruit players with Nigerian lineage who were not brought up at home, but they would be better paired up with a Nigerian manager. We have Jose Peseiro a Portugese that is still learning about Nigeria. Fortunately George Finidi is one of his assistants. Finidi is a Super Eagles legend with fantastic pedigree, however he is a very meek and quiet personality. We need people who will motivate these boys and make them realize what is at stake. South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, have an advantage in this regard. I always worry when we have to play South Africa, Ghana, Cameroon, and Algeria. These are teams with great national pride who may not have as many superstars as Nigeria but have discipline, cohesion, and tactical savvy. The same thing proved decisive in the women's game when Banyana Banyana dethroned the Super Falcons in WAFCON. Their quality of coach is what Nigeria needs in both the men's and women's teams. If we had Emmanuel Amunike or Joseph Yobo coaching Nigeria for AFCON, I would predict a final four at the very least. The players need to be pushed. AFCON is like war. Talent can not win it. Nigeria's ability to win it will depend on how they perform in the group stage. If they win their group, they have a chance. If they barely qualify, they will cease to be a contender. I feel we should have taken one or two local defensive midfielders. We are going to need hustle. We will score goals. The question is how many we concede.
Our team lacks grit, most of the players are adapted to European football with finesse and not physicality like African football. Aribo is weak physically, Chukwueze lacks purpose and team focus though supremely talented. Central defenders not physical enough. Ndidi and Iwobi needs to own the midfield to reduce the pressure on the defence. Uzoho is a terrible weakling that all African teams now know and they will try him everywhere.
All your points are valid @uchennanwosu4625 The Super Eagles performance at the Afcon is certainly going to dependent on the attitude they come to the competition with. The strike force is exciting. If Jose Peseiro can get the best out of the likes of Victor Osimehen, Victor Boniface, Kelechi Iheanacho and Samuel Chukweze, there will be nobody that can stop us. The boys need their bonuses paid on time and extra incentives and they will perform. What do you think of the selection of Umar Sadiq? and where do you think Alex Iwobi's best position is? and what has been your best Afcon performance of the Super Eagles in recent years?
@FutAfrique Nigeria has not had a good AFCON since they won it in South Africa. We have had inconsistency in management and poor retention of talent. People only remember a player's last performance, and once they do not deliver, they are written off. The football federation is not investing money into critical areas like enough quality friendlies. They are more concerned with financial considerations. Umar Sadiq is a good player. However, he is not as good as Terem Murphy or Paul Onuachu. One can argue that Onuachu and Murphy play similar to Osimhen and Boniface. Sadiq likes to take on defenders. He definitely can make his way into the box, but he tends to be clumsy. He is big and tall, but he doesn't seem to be robust. However, Nigeria is deep in the attack. Where we need more strength is in defensive midfield. Ndidi is the only standout performer in that role. Historically, Super Eagles have always played 2 defensive midfielders. They usually have one holding midfielder and a midfield destroyer - ball winner. It used to be Sunday Oliseh and either Mutiu Adepoju or Garba Lawal. We have a new guy called Onyedika. He is relatively untested but impressed in his debut. All the other midfielders are attacking players. Peseiro has limited Iwobi's role in the attack in order to give us some defensive balance. His role had been holding midfielder. I agree with the coach because he is the best decision maker with the ball for Nigeria. He will pass it backward, dribble, or initiate an attack as needed. He is the most pivotal player for Nigeria. We need to keep possession in order to win. Our opponents will punish any careless mistakes, especially since we are not strong in goalkeeping. Iheanacho will lead the attack. They can also use Boniface as an attacking midfielder. He knows how to play in that position. I think Chukwueze will come off the bench. We also have defenders who can play in the midfield if need be. The middle is key for Nigeria. We got eliminated in the last AFCON because we dropped back as the opponent advanced and allowed them to shoot from distance. We need to shut down attacks early, and that requires stamina.
Why would you put Boniface who is strictly a stricker, and a good one, as an attacking midfielder, then make lheanacho the top striker, knowing fully well that although lheanacho is capable of playing both positions, that he, lheanacho, is more natural and far better in an attacking midfield role? It's almost like having Osimhen play as a midfielder and lwobi as a top striker. I don't get that logic.
He’s right. Nearly Half of our team didn’t even visit Nigeria until they were called up to the squad. Whilst that’s common with some of the other squads, Naija’s swag is what makes them who they are.
Am a Nigeria, our players don't play their best in country matches they only play their best in their clubs,in this competition Nigeria is not going anywhere
Is there a possibility that these players will want to add an Afcon winners medal to their personal trophy cabinets? Most players want to win as much as they can in their careers.

When you have a dead-form Captain what do you expect? Failure, of course! Ahmed Musa should have retired from the National Team the same time with his generation, Mikel Obi, Odion Ighalo, Emmanuel Emenike, Vincent Enyiama & Co after the third place finish in 2019 CAF Nation's Cup. From 2020 to 2024 Musa market value has dropped from $25 Million Dollars to less than 1 million Dollars. His club form has dropped like pack of sand, from England Premiership (Top League) to unknown Club in Turkey, where he is cleaning the available bench in some weekend games. Sometimes he oscillate from unrecognized Turkish club with Kano Pillars. Is this what the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has reduced the Captain of a National Team as big Super Eagles to??? to a Captain who cannot lead on the field. Our Captain's sole duty now is reduced to praying if the Team win's a Cup, to come and lift the cup. Is this kind of ambition not so shameful????????? When Pele won 1970 World Cup, Pele and his generation, Albertos Tores, Parreire and Co retired from the Brazilian National Team to make way for more dynamic younger players to play for Brazil. In 1974, Pele was still very active, playing regular Football at Jomo Cosmos. But when Germany hosted World Cup in the same 1974, Pele was in Frankfurt as a Commentator - NOT AS A PLAYER. When Christian Chukwu won the Nation's Cup in 1980, he and his generation, Emmanuel Okala, Muda Lawal, Segun Odegbami and Co retired from the National Team (Green Eagles) and made way for younger generation of players. Ahmed Musa has not told his body the truth. While Ahmed Musa Body Language has been telling so much truth about his loss of form, loss of football market value, brittle weak bones, lack of stamina, lack of speed, lack of dribbling ability, lack of flexibility and generational gap, Musa continues to deceive himself. Ahmed Musa also continues to deceive the Nation and the fans that dearly love him with the hope of a big jackpot lottery win from his scavenging leadership. Musa is about to play the same scavenger role he played at the last Nations Cup that lead Super Eagles to a dismal first-time round-of-16 knockout beating in the hands of Tunisia. I thought after that disgrace Ahmed Musa should have bid farewell to Super Eagles. To my greatest surprise Grand Pa Musa is still in the Team! If I were Musa I should have entered the same Plane with Victor Boniface and say goodbye to the 2024 Nation's Cup. It is only a fool that does not know the meaning of the word - LIMIT, that continues to dance, even when the music is over and turned off. It is so stupid for a National hero, a football legend to play until all his achievements are rubbished on the field by younger players, some of whom are younger than his first son. Where was Musa when Super Eagles was bashed 2-0 in the friendly by Guinea? Why didn't he change the game? Musa was not invited for most of the qualification matches and friendlies since 2022 because he has been out of form, sometimes clubless. Tell me what is the criteria in selecting a dead-form player who has not been part of the team for nearly 2 years for a competition as big as a CAF Nation's Cup, if not NFF fraudulent bribery, money laundering and embezzlement? What is the criteria of dropping regular players, like Terim Moffi, who has been part of the Team for the past two years?? It's unfortunate that we have criminals, who parade themselves as sport administrators managing Nigerian Football. When I wrote last week of the fraudulent way NFF trimmed the National Team from 27 to 25, some people think I am crazy. How on earth do you drop an in-form Ligue1 striker for Turkish-League Bench-Warmers, Ahmed Musa and Kenneth Omerua? Which criteria, if not Bribery by NFF. Now that this incident has happened to our National Team, NFF must use this opportunity to weed out dead-form players like Ahmed Musa and Kenneth Omerua and bring in 5 players to complete the squad to a complete 27 players. 27 players will enable the coach to have reasonable option, if another injury occurs. Best Wishes Super Eagles!
Very good points @user-kx7m8hz8x perhaps Grand pa Musa and Kenneth Omerua are useful in the dressing room. I honestly cannot think of any other reason that these two Super Eagle stars are still selected. These two players have served the country and I totally agree with you that it is time to give younger players a chance to help Nigerian football move forward. Essam El Hadary was 44 years and 21 days old when he played for Egypt in the final against Cameroon on 5 February 2017.Grand Pa Musa and Kenneth Omerua might break the record this year!
Personally my own opinion on my Nigerian team or any other African team is simple; Any crop of players that are in the national team of their parental ancestry simply because they aren't good enough to play in the country of their birth is not worth my time to even call a national team. This bunch of DIASPORA REJECTS are ruining the African game. I will only give consideration to players that are more than good enough to play say in teams like example their country of birth Germany, France or England and are practically being begged to represent those countries but MADE A CONSIOUS CHOICE TO SAY it's Nigeria or any other African country of ancestry for them. Yes they are too good to represent Germany and the world knows it but they made the alternate choice. Any crop of players less than that calibre for me, I'll rather focus on the local breed and lose rather than field the likes of what we have now and look more like "super chikens" rather than EAGLES. My words may be very strong but I have to be honest since the exit of Keshi we have no Super Eagles. What we have today is a Nigerian team riding on hype of the old rather than capacity. YES THEY CAN PLAY BUT NOT AT THE CLASS / LEVEL OF THE NIGERIA WE KNOW. This Nigerian team isn't going anywhere. You can bookmark this message and come back to this topic after the tournamnet ends.

The sad truth😔
We shall see
Which of the players specifically do you believe will be the downfall of the Super Eagles in this tournament??
@@FutAfrique is anyone contending with Uzoho now?
@@FutAfrique the entire team is a mess. I don't believe in them even if my life depended on it.
If you don’t know football you don’t sit down and talk football. Victor Osimhen u are talkin about is a Lagos kid. Started his football on the streets of Lagos similar to a lot of other national team players . Stop talkin trash
How many goals do you predict Victor will score at Afcon. 2023?
@@FutAfrique2 goals
