The car is like comparing the old top gear and the new one
So true
Took a single scroll to find a negative new top gear comment. Why don’t they just give up or make it Chris Harris Drives?

Spot on!
Nope the new supra is faster and more fun and better sport car
The new top gear is worse in every way
Cant wait for the M version..
Me neither......
If this m40i version is this good, just imagine the supra M..

BMW: We are proud to introduce the...
Toyota: Supra GRMN!
BMW won't be as stupid as this comment. A BMW M has an S-series engine. This and Z4 will only have the B58. Sure a faster Zupra will come but don't confuse your sushi with bratwurst.

yes please
more like sushi with german sausage bits instead of fish
Kevin Sandu sausage is still a damn nice meal!
It still taste damn good but just not what I ordered. Lol

The Mk4 was also limited to 155
If it hits the limiter at 112 mph does that make it a Japanese Toyota? 🤔

I hear that after replaying this clip
If Nissan has money to make GT-R, than Toyota should also have money to make a proper Supra
Yes. Well just forget about the whole decade difference in building new cars, well fotget the inflation costs to build it,well forget that they'd have to make factories just to make this one car, well forget that it'll be in the LC's price range if they'd built it themselves but is built to go against the 370z,M2C,and Cayman, well just forget that Toyota doesnt have a single production car making nowhere near 600hp. They'd just be asking to kill themselves if they even tried making it themselves even if they have the money they'll lose all of it instantly if they tried something like building it themselves.
Most of Toyotas money was wasted on the LFA project. Even for $375,000 Toyota would still lose on profits from the sheer R&D for that vehicle.

People need to get over all this history and legacy bullshit. They set out to make a good sportscare and they made a damn good one at that. Who gives a rats ass if the company known for making cheap Japanese crap right now has a car that actually feels premium and luxurious and German?
And besides. Most people complaining aren't gonna buy one anymore or probably can't afford one so why all the bitching?
Listen lads....personally I think only people that are passionate about the car's heritage are gonna complain (like me)..Objectively the Supra is great but it just hurts a little bit :(
Exactly.

I've always says the biggest and only problem with the new supra is that they called it a supra

I'd rather wait for Toyota to make a complete refresh with all Toyota bits.
swinglow33 hopefully this car will be a stepping stone to get there
Number 4 this is the last big grand tourer you’ll get under that badge. If you want all Toyota, buy a Lexus. Have fun tuning and tightening up that floaty boat suspension since they all drive like old school American land yachts aka couches
They won’t put Toyota bits in it especially engine due to cost. Plus Toyota interior is how do I put this politely poor compared with the German cars sadly.
@@Joolz1982 As an owner of a Toyota who owned a BMW, this is true... However, as a counter-argument, I offer the fact that while the interior may be cheaper in feel in Toyotas, especially old ones. There are PLENTY of us who prefer it that way. I'd rather an interior that I don't mind wearing down and replacing, and won't cost me much, than I would one that makes me anxious to enjoy my car for fear of wearing it down and that costs an arm, a leg, both my kidneys, half my liver and my left lung to replace when it wears down
@@Dominik189 Good point about interior being expensive in BMW etc. I hope they don’t wear out quickly!? As an owner of a 2004 Celica at moment (GT86 Jan) I think the old interiors have a few too many hard parts although do agree they could be replaced easily and cheaply. On that point yes I wish they had put a few more Toyota parts in the interior like steering wheel and Tac Gauges(which apparently also BMW made!).

There's so many cars that are the same as other cars but for some reason the internet is really angry about this
Love how much of the concept made it through production. Fine with the engine. That interior though.... About as passionate as an electric shaver. It's perfectly adequate in form and function and completely forgettable.
I've sat in one and yeah it is a very nice place to sit, but I see your point, perhaps some features to make it stand out would be a good idea
Tommy Bason once I sat in it I was quickly able to see every detail, it would’ve been better to discover new little things later on if I were to own it.
@@tommybason6057 I know Toyota said they had full control over it and shared platforms are nothing new and VERY GOOD for the industry. The Supra may not have come back otherwise. The shared parts right out of the BMW bin is not an issue as well. I do like the look of some of their options. It's just not very [Toyotay] in there especially when they added some MK IV to the look outside. I'll admit I thought there would be some version or nod to the prior car in the center console. Not sure why they played this one overly safe. It's not going to age well at all. Lastly I know people seem to like these raised center displays but it looks terrible in my eyes. It's like they designed the whole interior, got it approved, started building them and someone said hey guys you forgot to add a screen to this car. Oh crap. ahhh. Just stick it here. GO GO GO. Can't wait for this trend to end. Even motorizing them wont help. Just build them into the dash already. Even a hood going to the bottom of the windshield would solve some of the tacked on look. Then again I don't plan on buying one and must not be apart of the demographic they are after. Right now Tesla is the worst. I swear if you take one out you will find a vesa mount on the back.......
LKNANML yeah but it’s like they teased us with this perfect FT1 and put it in a vice and smashed it and then watered it down. It’s just too damn tiny and the interior is also too small it’s like they wanted there version of the 370Z but then they shouldn’t have used the Supra name
LKNANML
Toyota shared nothing. The car is full BMW, it was recalled by BMW
I have no problem with Supra having a BMW engine...my only complaint is that they don't offer a manual. Then this would be something special on the market!
Aston Martin power some of their cars with the Mercedes 4L V8. It is a brilliant engine as it is, but Aston Martin does their own exhaust and mapping of the engine, so it feels and sounds different then unique and different then the Mercedes. Toyota didn't even do that 😒 Its just. . . lame
theres a chance there will be a manual in the upcoming gr supra but dont be surprised it it dosent have one

The old Supra didn’t make all those noises until the tuners got their hands on it and the 2JZ didn’t come stock with 800 horsepower.
1200 WHP** xD but true, however, the 2JZ-GTE did make some lovely noises all it's own from the factory.
@@Dominik189 not as nice as the noise the bmw in-line 6 makes in stock form, people need to move on from the 2jz obsession, it’s old tech. Great engine for sure but not an engine for a modern sports car
@@lordderak I've heard all of 1 BMW engine who's tone I liked and that was the old ass S14 engine. BMW engines sound like garbage to me, in fact most European car manufacturers engines sound like complete and utter shyte regardless of the exhaust on them. At least to me. I like BMW’s for their engineering and how they feel when you drive them, but hate the excess maintenance / repair costs when the cars get older.
I like Toyota’s because they’re solid, reliable cars with low ownership costs, if maybe a bit boring.
If I buy this, am I getting the best of both worlds? Or the worst of both worlds? Am I going to regret the purchase when the warranty is up? There was a rumor before the car’s reveal that Toyota had gone through the BMW motor and quality tested every part, redesigning those that didn’t meet Toyota standards - much to the surprise of BMW. However, Toyota has said basically squat publicly about the reliability testing they did of these various BMW parts, which has me questioning the validity of that rumor.
Bottom line for me - a BMW engineered Toyota sounds interesting, but this could be a better car to lease vs buy.
Great point about reliability. And I suspect if that were true about Toyota testing the Bimmer parts they'd keep it on the lowdown because if they publicised it then they're basically broadcasting that BMW parts are shit. They're kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Don't buy into all the marketing hype about parts being re-tested and strengthened... Toyota may have tested parts for fitment compatibility but nothing's been changed. The part numbers are even the same as the z4.
And all Toyota dealerships that provide servicing to the new Supra have a single BMW technician on-site to do Supra servicing.
So it's a BMW that they're now able to sell to Toyota customers.
Everybody wins... Except the buyer of course.
@Chaminda Thushara Ruwan Kasturi No doubt buddy, I have mad respect for the B58, it's very tunable.
But it isn't a Japanese creation.
Simply put, with Toyota being maybe the world's largest auto manufacturer, they can't have the excuse that a new model will cost too much to produce.
It's just a dilution of what a Toyota actually is.

When Nissan decided to make the new GT-R, they made a new GT-R.

Maybe a 25 year old motor engineered by a piano company is the definition of "soul" and "personality" for you
@TheStatistnr27 nope, just stating simple facts, 3 basic things define personality & soul of any vehicle- 1) chassis 2) engine/transmission 3) balance & suspension system,(All BMW). Only work toyota did was tuning of the above 3.
Dressing up differently won't change who she is.
@@thisisjcs3620 Toyota don't need 25 year old engine, they can design new powerhouse, drive train, & chassis in a blip if they want to.
But they know people are stupid enough to buy a tuned up & rebatched Z4, So why bother! Sell enough rebatched Z4 to stupid people, keep money & name afloat.
MeanWhile invest in future i.e. hybrid & electric vehicle technology.
@@wdmfan first of all, the main reason why Toyota borrowed "soulless" components from BMW was because they didn't want to spend their cash on developing a new I6. If they did come up with a 3JZ or whatever, the sticker price of the A90 would've been too expensive and it wouldn't be so much of an affordable sports car, meaning you guys would still complain. Meanwhile BMW produces some of the most bulletproof I6s and they also have a solid motorsports background, so you could see where that was going. The Supra name and the 2J themselves wouldn't be considered "legendary" if it weren't for FnF, since Toyota themselves replaced the 2J in favor of the 3S and the 3UZ on actual motorsports like JGTC. If Toyota were to use an existing engine from their own arsenal like the Camry V6, the Supra fanboys would still complain.
"Is it a good sports car?" - Yes
"But could it have been better if designed and built by Toyota in JAPAN" = Most certainly and Definitely YESSSS!!
@TheEpic Triot Only the skin.
The chassis is BMW aswell as the Engine.
Every major component that makes a cars DNA.
Let us reverse it, would it be a Ferrari or Mercedes if it was all Hyundai (engine, transmission, chassis etc) other than the outer skin, tuning, seats and steering wheel? I rest my case.
@TheEpic Triot Keep justifying it but it is not what a Supra.
Shared parts and chassis with another totally different maker is not how or what a Supra should be.
Your argument is like justifying a BMW M3 or any BMW as not being a HYUNDAI because of tiny differences when the whole thing should be 100% unique and original.
It is a Supra by name only tainted and unoriginal.

It's a sports car, not a car made for people to say "ew BMW".
Turbo charged is such an old technology. Internal combustion creates noise, vibrations and stress to the people living beside the roads. He is surprisingly good at it
I know I was wondering why he was getting so much hate in the comments
lets take 5 seconds to appreciate the way chris harris ends his drifts so smoothly, its tough to do!
Finally, some good reporting, this !!
Totally agree with this review. I was a bit dissapointed that Toyota didn't build this car from the ground up in the spirit of the old Supra. Then you drive one for the first time and all of the car snobbery dissapears after just a few minutes. It was perhaps the most enjoyable, fun, exhilirating 20 mins I've ever spent in a car. Great car in its own right just as it is.
All of the hates on the new Supra, but in Japan itself this new "Supra" is very well perceived
Didn't know they were into BMWs
That's because the people here dont live in a constant haze of stupidity like fan boys who've never owned any time if Supra to begin with across the internet crying about the new car. Even Orido the Supra god is in love with this car and his credibility and word has way more meaning than the typical internet fan boys who can only wish they had a Supra.
I think that's because they actually trust and put faith into the successor of one of the engineers who originally built the car now.But to other people they wont let it go and realize the actual good reasons why they decided to go this route. Just saying this video proves my point in a lot of ways. The actual heritage of the actual engineering is carried on in it.
Chris Harris speaks clearly and understandable.
Those other 2 geezers, nobody outside of the UK understands them and also are no gearheads
Of course it's a good car. BMW & Toyota
"It's a BMW. It's so wrong" blah blah blah but since when being a bmw is something bad and wrong?
One of the things that made the MKI4 legendary was what you could with it tuning wise. So far the MKI5 is looking good for that
I went to a dealer 2 hours away just to sit in one. And it didt feel like a toyota at all. I got a massive bmw feel the moment i sat down
I’m loving some of these comments. It’s JUST like the GT86 isn’t a Toyota either - it’s a Subaru. I can totally understand folks feeling a bit hurt about it’s heritage etc, but, practically thinking now, how many of those people have had both a recent generation BMW and a recent generation Toyota? I have, and I’m sorry (well, I’m not), but for engineering and quality alone, I know which I’d rather have. That B58 and ZF box are amazing, that same combo is the M140i, M240i, 340, 440, 540, 640....and the tuning potential is immense. Not to mention fairly decent mpg for the power level too. So it’s not going to be a ‘bad car’ at all. I’d love one.
It's sad to see a legend of a car lose its soul
I'm honestly lost when people call it a legend when the legend also shared its i6 from another car, shared it's chassis from another car,and had a close design to another car.
You're absoluely incorrect. The Toyota Supra's soul is the 3.0 litre straight six engine balance, performance and tunability. Look at the Nissan Skyline. It no longer exists. The Nissan GT-R is a different type of car all together, nothing done to preserve the 'soul' of the car.
@@sunrisesunset1734 i get that but the GT-R is designed and egrenierend and build in japan while the new supra is more like getting catfished. you expect a girl but it turned out its a dude with girly bonestucture.

YSG 2017 you won’t find an old school feeling japanese car in nowadays new car market. Example NSX, celica Ask yourself why and If you can’t accept it buy an old car. For the time being a Supra is a good sports car, that’s a fact.
Miguel a Supra buyer doesn’t want an old school feeling car, they want a Japanese Toyota feeling car. If you’ve owned one, the design, balance, and feel is unique and instantly comfortable and recognizable. Such nuances are missing in sterile BMWs. Japanese and German Engineering are both excellent, but come from very different trains of thought and approach and discipline.
YSG 2017 BMWs are one of the best handling cars in the world that’s a fact too. If they were sterile you couldn’t handle it as easy as it looks in this video and Harris admits they are good handling sport cars. The character of a modern Toyota is sterile. So sorry for you that you won’t find in the new market what you are looking for.
Miguel it’s not about handling or luxury or performance. It’s about essence. Character. Feel. Imagine dating super models from all corners of the globe. They are all beautiful and hot, yet very different. Toyota’s flagship sportscar brand icon is now German. Doesn’t make any sense at all.
Everybody gangsta until toyota says *CHECK ENGINE*
Toyota says it would have been to expensive to make the original FT1. Chevy makes a mid engine Corvette for the same price.
Toyota Supra is like finding some blokes at a pub that have great humor and slapping the Top Gear label on them.
The accent is a wee bit Scottish 😂😂😂
Toyota doesn't get nearly enough credit for all the fantastic work they did to make the Supra a tuner car. They took that BMW motor, and beefed up the internals so hard that they STRESS TESTED INDIVIDUAL BOLTS. They have entirely different chassis (The new Supra even has space for a large trans cooler), and the suspensions are set up differently. Not to mention, the A90 makes around 400bhp if the Road & Track Dyno test of 369rwhp are to be believed.
I’m just here to say I miss Jeremy
Watch grand tour
Could have just rebadge a detuned and restyled LFA or Lexus Coupe a SUPRA and called it a day!
Not to mention costing less in Research and Development and keeping the Spirit and pedigree of the "Supra" pure.
I’m still waiting for James May to make another sandwich tutorial rather than this rubbish
