    This is what all YT videos should be: calming, informative and a brief escape from the mundane realities of life. Thanks again for taking us along. Probably just happened, but I can't wait till ice out! Question about the crocs, I'm looking into getting some in order to bring the waders while out in the backcountry. Have you noticed that you're getting pebbles/rocks in the shoes (possibly puncturing the waders) since they have the vents in the toes. I was thinking it would be worth the weight to get the fully enclosed toe cap crocs. Any input will be greatly appreciated!

      Hi, thank you for the kind words as that's exactly what my written chronicles and these videos are supposed to do. I appreciate that you recognize that! I've not had an issue with crocs. Keep in mind that mine are the older "outdoor" crocs they tried to sell as Bass Pro. (On sales for $15 back in the day. I should have bought 2 pair!) Occasionally rocks do get in the toe. It doesn't happen that often (mine may have fewer or smaller holes than the current crop). Usually rocks only get in when I'm hiking on trails. If I'm actually wading and a rock gets in, it's usually a rounded stone from being in the water and wouldn't be an issue for waders. In my view, it's a good choice for high country fishing. It's light, relatively grippy (at least mine are) and comfortable enough for trail use and rock hopping. You'll notice my buddy Roger wearing them as well.
      Thanks again! Glad you enjoy the channel.

    Tough hike in with a great reward. Can’t wait to see the hike back! Great video Jim (and “roger”)

    Amazing! Love it up there in golden country! You gotta work for those fish. Gonna be snow up there maybe throughout the season this year.

      Yeah it certainly will be interesting! Just when the season gets going, the season will be ending!

    It looks like you're roll casting a decent amount although there don't seem to be any trees. Just wondering why that is, as I have much to learn here. Thanks for taking us along. I can't believe you're hiking out 20 miles when you already feel your legs are shot. You're a stronger man than I, Jim Lowe!

    • @highcountrychronicles
      @highcountrychronicles  Рік тому

      Haha, no trees but lots of rocks. When I mentioned losing that scud, it was on a back cast. So two reasons- lots of rocks in some sections and frankly, I’m so used to having to roll cast that it’s sort of become my default.
      Thanks for watching!

      @@highcountrychronicles How do you deal with that elevation without getting sick? I was up at 8,200' (granted, coming from almost sea level in SF) and was fatigued big time. Did you have to acclimate or do you live at a higher elevation. Nevertheless, 11k+ is no joke.

    • @highcountrychronicles
      @highcountrychronicles  Рік тому

      No. I don’t try to acclimatize. I used to but then figured how much acclimation can you do over night or even over 24 hours. So I just prefer to go in.
      I typically don’t have problems up to 8K. Above that I just take it slow.

    Dang, your videos always torture me! I grew up in the sierra nevada backpacking, climbing, and fly fishing. Over the past ten years I've been working 50+ hour weeks in the desert of New Mexico. I miss the granite, the lakes, and peaks of the sierra! Your videos take me back there, if only for a short time. A bad day with gut issues in the sierra is better than a good day at work in New Mexico. Keep living the good life, it's inspirational. I'll retire in three years, perhaps I'll see you in the sierra with my fly pole.

      Hi Jim, I'm glad the videos can take you away and put you in the mountains for a short time. That's exactly what I'm trying to do and why I started writing the Chronicles on highcountryflyfisher.com. I spent some years during college fishing the Jemez and Sandia Mountains, hope those are an option for you.
      If you ever see me on the trail, flag me down. I hope to still be doing this for years to come.
      Thanks for watching!

    My plan for those lakes includes hiking in the way you're going out but spread over a day and the following morning. I bet your legs were shot after that hike out. Beautiful fish, and in my opinion big for the Sierra.

    • @highcountrychronicles
      @highcountrychronicles  Рік тому

      Yeah. Certainly big for the Sierra but we had high hopes given the rep. Admittedly though, probably not the best time of the year to fish here. Cold temps. Shifting barometric pressure.
      We’re gonna go again next year. Probably do the “easy” way on a single day. I felt surprising good on the way out. Thanks for watching!

    Wonderful adventure and accurate commentary about being over 50 and reaching/bending in the cold! Also wondering what rod blank you’re fishing in the video, you seemed to prefer cane typically but opted for a graphite stick I’m presuming to gain more power and and versatility in diverse and potentially windy conditions in the backcountry. Your videos are well crafted, balancing the challenge of getting to the location with the joy fishing relatively untouched locations.

      @@edg4462 Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos!
      The rod is a kit rod from a Sage LL 9ft 5wt blank.
      I knew I would be fishing a sinking line and wanted something that wouldn't load up as quickly yet still be light to carry.

      @@highcountrychronicles interestingly enough, I have that exact same blank that came with two tips and one of my friends who enjoys Rod building, put it together for me. I built Rod in the past but saltwater rods or fishing long range in Baja. I’m new to this sport, but I paired it with a Galvan and Brookie. Need to learn how to fish is sinking line. I’m just learning about fishing two flies at once. Fish two dries at Hot Creek Ranch two weeks ago and that worked.

      @@edg4462 That's cool. My kit back in the day only came with one tip.
      I basically fish a sinking like like I do a floating. Count down method. There's probably better ways to do it. 😅

    Fly fishing looks difficult.

    • @highcountrychronicles
      @highcountrychronicles  Рік тому

      Not to worry. It’s not as difficult as it may look sometimes. Not all fly fishers fish the way that I do. My method has limitations, namely fishing deep and at great distances but it’s what I enjoy.
