Parents don't need to make you play. Kids play the sport because they can and want to.
true true, first they play with their friends after the school on the local field, or in the primary school durring their sport classes, if they like it more than others they usualy sign in into to the local footbal club (sport club) to learn how to play or just to keep their fit up cause it's important in that age to be healthy - all reasons U can imagine are true - nobody knows if they are going to become pro player or it's just a play during their childhood but that's the place where their first managers or their coach will fish true talents - imho it's much more fair than a draft cause everybody got a chance to become a pro footbal player, no university league is needed at all - only skills matter and your love for football. And let's say it straight - for many many ppl football is more than a religion!

@@kevineggs1376 A trophy that you play one game to win is not a real trophy and you know it. I have no idea who won the super cup in any given year, and I don't care. I do know who won the premiere league, the championsleague, the FA cup and the other major domestic leagues. you can count them if it makes you feel better. I have never heard someone calling it "a double" when a team wins the premiere league and the community shield. A double or a treble means the league, european cup and domestic cup. to the majority of football fans.
When it comes to scouting and signing talents football works very different from US sports. Instead of a draft every team has it's own youth academy where they develop their own players, sometimes from the age of 6. Those youth players are either kids from the town of the club or the region and then you also have scouts who search the country (or other countries) for young talents to sign to the academy. FC Barcelona (from Spain) for example found Messi in Argentina when he was 13 and signed him instantly. He moved to a different continent at 13 to play for "La Masia" Barcelona's academy, one of the most revered youth programs in the world and at 16 he made his professional debut for Barcelona's 1st team. Barcelona also provided for Messis family so they could move there with him, in other words Messi was providing for his family at 13.
So as a club you can either build up a good academy with good coaches and training facilities or you can just try to buy talents from smaller clubs to build up your team. Imagine instead of the draft NBA teams had their own academies where they develop their own players trying to out compete the academies of the other teams. Ofcourse you can develop these talents' skills to fit perfectly into your system if you plan for the long term.
I think both approaches are interesting but what I love about the academy system is that most of those talents are either from the town of the club or from the region, that's why those homegrown talents are often fan favorites, they're from the same town as the fans, they've been with the club long before they joined the 1st team and they tend to be more loyal since they understand the values of the club much better than players who were bought from other clubs. Fans can identify with homegrown players much more and when a team has alot of them fans can identify with the team as a whole much more.

It's also fascinating how every academy has own style or rather a philosophy of football which is also most of the time the philosophy of the club itself. Most notably Ajax's academy where since the '70 they teach "total football" with high preassure and high discipline, La Massia and their tiki taka style with fast passes and heavely focused possesion or... Bryne's academy xD in the early '00 they've started innovative program with minimalizing the rivalry between boys and emphasis on more casual games with loose rules, they basically let them play, just like on the street but with top notch fields and equipment ;p They also never kick anyone out, every kid who want to play can do it. They are from the small town and not many players attended to the academy, but they've managed to produce a few pretty good pro players including Erlin Haaland xD He was in this academy since he was 5 until he was 16.
And I don't know around the world, but in Argentina we have small clubs everywhere, clubs that doesn't compete in any of the Argentine Leagues, just for kids. These are usually community owned clubs, that competes in regional kids tournaments. Most of the time they play futsal or 7-each-side-football instead of 11-football, but there are always scouts watching the games and trainings and looking for kids to invite them to the big clubs youth academies like Boca Juniors, Newells, etc. I think Messi started directly in the Newell's academy but most players in the NT started playing futsal at 3-4-5 yo for their neighbourhood small club. Maradona as an example, he started playing for a club called "Cebollitas" in the hood (a really poor hood) until someone from Argentinos Juniors (1st division club) saw him there and invited him to the youth academy (and bought him a house for his family, because he was that good already lol)
@@lukecole5056 actually Messi started just as you described a typical route of Argentinian kid ;p He started in really small local club called Grandoli where his father was a coach, he played there for 2 years before he moved to Newell's.
I once saw a British comedian talking about American football and how it's always stopping so the players can line up again and how many commercials there are. He said that international football is like a national pause when their team is playing. Everyone stops, everyone watches, well everyone that's into the game that is. My personal favorite team is Arsenal F.C. The one thing I wish MLS did differently here in the US is have relegation, the bottom teams moves down and the top three move up. I feel like that would give each team a bigger incentive to push themselves each year with more on the line.
While a P/R system would be nice (!?), the US doesn't have a foundation in place to handle the such a thing.
The country's biggest stumbling block to be so they can even begin to be taken seriously as a footballing nation is to get rid of the pay-to-play system they have/use.
Allow the sport to be as accessible as possible for as many as possible. Increase the player base to give them more talent to choose from. It's the sport of the masses, not the sport of the privileged few.
@@almostyummymummy Agreed, Pay to Play is without doubt the biggest obstacle to the MLS becoming the globally renowned talent factory it has the potential to become. Most of the games greatest players don't come from wealth or privilege, they reach the top by fighting tooth and nail for everything, from the bottom up. They just need a pathway into the game.

When we talk about paying to play we are not talking about renting pitches, most of the clubs have their own pitches and of course they pay for it, since the construction and buying the land for the academy, stadium, administrations, till the people involved and so on. Of course everyone will have to pay to play. But the thing her is league itself. The MLS is the only league in the world in which a team has to pay some milions of dollars to be part of. So when you pay to be part of a league you can never be out and other teams can never enter unless they pay that amount of money. Meanwhile with promotion/relegation system you don't pay to play in the particular league, you reach it through your performance. As I said, of course you are paying a lot of things to play to reach that level but still you are not paying to that league to be part of that, in fact once you reach it, you are paid to be there.

Football (soccer) has both defence and attack in the SAME team. Continuous play for 90 mins with a short break after 45 mins(half time). Its NOT an all day thing like the USA. Watch some of the best teams in recent years, Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool, Ajax, Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. Then if you enjoy it, try watching The World Cup. Have a great time. Oh try watching Messi- greatest player ever.
The amount of football players is many many many times higher than that of players from any American sport. It's the world's most popular sport and most played sport. A couple of years ago I read that Brazil alone has more than 5,000 professional players. So the scouting apparatus is global and extremely well-developed. Clubs have their own academies to educate players and will scout the local area. The larger the club, the larger the academy and the wider the area. But they also scout globally. To give an example, I follow a Swedish mid-tier team. The Swedish league is like the 15-20th best league in Europe, but even bad teams in Sweden will regularly scout youth players in Africa and South America. Sometimes they send scouts to watch these players themselves, sometimes they find them in international youth cups, often they get recommendations from international scout networks, and of course, a lot of scouting is now data-driven and done online. There are insane scout databases tracking tens of thousands of players and their performances.

To the question of recruiting players:
Football clubs have youth organizations called "academies". Players enter academies from a very young age - sometimes 8-9. They sign contracts with the club, but are not professional yet. It's similar to a letter of intent in American college sports, the only difference being the age of the players.
Players who are good enough, advance through different age groups up to roughly age 19. Those who are not, are released. Once a player graduates from an academy, he may play for the club's reserve team (like a practice squad for the NFL, only they play actual matches against other reserve teams and/or lower division teams). If he's exceptional, he may go immediately to the club's senior team, IE the team that everyone watches on television.
Academy players may be scouted by other clubs, with the player's rights being bought and sold just as if he were a senior player.
MLS clubs have academies, as well. Many are partnered with prominent European clubs, and have developed excellent relations of their own.
MLS is what's known as a "seller's league". While the standard of the league as a whole is inferior to England, Spain, Germany, etc, it is high enough that the top players attract the interest of elite leagues and clubs. The difference in quality and talent is similar to the difference between very good college football teams and the NFL.
Obviously, any NFL team would destroy even the best college teams. But there are exceptional college players with the talent to play in the NFL. That's an imperfect analogy, but close enough for a high level understanding.
Transfers are a key source of income for clubs from lesser leagues. If a club can invest $500k in the training and development of a player, then sell his rights for $2 million, they will do it.
My own club, Celtic, operates on a seller's model, as well. They typically buy players for $2-$8 million, play them for 2-4 years, then sell them to bigger clubs for substantial profits. Celtic play in Scotland, which is a lower league in terms of audience, quality, and economic power. But they are a well known, highly pedigreed club. Therefore, European scouts of big clubs look closely at successful Celtic players. Some recent Celtic players in bigger leagues include Odsonne Édouard, Kieran Tierney, and Josip Juranovic.

as a youth you just can't walk up to a club and say I want to play for your youth academy, you have to try out and they have to say yes. playing in a lower league is the best specially if you are gifted, you will be identified. tiki taka is the one to watch
In soccer they pretty much scout players from the aged of 4 or 5 looking for natural talent. Most teams have an academy or a soccer schools where you get coached and have schooling for free. Players can join these academies from the age of 8 years and if they are good they can go up each year like school, but can also get cut from the academy each year if they are considered not good enough. When they reach 14 or 15 they can be given an apprentice contract which is there to retain their services as youth team player. When they reach 18 they sign a professional contract and move to a team outside their continent.

Every club can buy a player from every other club, think of it as a free market. If I'm Liverpools manager for example and I want to buy Kylian Mbappe I have to offer his current club (PSG) a sum of money, however they can decide how much they want for him (unless he has a release clause in his contract which he doesn't). So let's say I offer 150 million for him PSG says no they want 300 million for him, now we negotiate until we can agree on a sum or if I can't afford what they demand I have to retreat and give up. If we agree on let's say on 250 million the next step is negotiations with Mbappe himself, where we offer him a contract and try to convince him to join us. If he signs the personal contract Liverpool transfers the 250 million to his old club (PSG) and he is now a Liverpool player.
Transfers like that happen from small to big clubs on every scale, so there's players who get transferred for 10'000$ and there's players who get transferred for 100 million $, Neymar holds the all-time record, PSG paid 222 million € (or back then 263 million $) to Barcelona to get him. But again alot of people confuse this, that transfer fee doesn't go to the player himself, it goes to his old club. The player has his own salary, so if you wanna buy a player you have to pay the transfer fee and his salary aswell.

There are more clauses that can be included in a transfer deal too. For example a buy-back clause, which means that if you sell a player to a team, if that new team decides to sell him on again the original team that sold that player will get first refusal to buy the player back.
One of the things, regarding the Youth Acadamies in non-American sports, outside of the US, sports are not associated with schools. You don't play for your highschool team, and then go play for a college team. You play in clubs. There are clubs for all age groups from under 10's all the way up to under 21 year old clubs.
Professional teams will own these youth clubs in their city/region so instead of the kids' family paying a fee for their kid to be a member, the team may pay the kid to play for their club.
Clubs for people over 21 do also exist, these would be your semi-pro/beer league equivalents. Theoretically, if they win enough, they could get promoted into the professional leagues.

We have scouts finding talent too, just our lower league teams are linked to a geographic location rather a school/college. Towns and cities can have multiple teams, like Manchester United vs Manchester United
About the scouting and youth system, you should look up the story of Sandro Tonali. The basic idea is that he wanted to go to the youth academy of his favorite club but couldn't and had to go a different journey.

they are mandatory in Spain, even if the player is signed from outside of Spain. Thomas Partey was famously stolen by Arsenal on the midnight hour of he transfer window deadline, simply because they triggered his release clause at 11:57pm.
People do complain about it, because it allows the two big clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona to poach players from other clubs just by throwing money at them, usually at a bad time of the window.
Fun fact: Only 2 football confederations have won a world cup, UEFA (I believe they have 11 or 12) and the Conmebol (10 in total, 5 Brasil, 3 Argentina and 2 Uruguay)

The World Cup final has always been played with a European team in it since the 1950 World Cup (Brazil vs Argentina). The host has won the World Cup on several occasions- Uruguay, Argentina, Italy, England, France, Germany (West Germany) have all won at home so being the host is a good advantage. Brazil have hosted the WC twice but have not won it, losing the final in 1950 and being whopped 7-1 in 2014 by Germany.
2 notes: Scouting is done by scouts with an expertise in local leagues. For example in American sports you have several coaches and assistant coaches handle scouting. In Futbol teams have designated scouts not on the coaching staff. Say Chelsea has a scouting team of scouts they set out to watch games in Africa they can scout kids as young as 9 for their youth Academy. The youth players then move sometimes with their parents and sometimes to a boarding school run by the team. There are also scouts for ages up to adults. Different teams focus on recruitment in different regions of the world. All big teams are connected all over the world.
2. Release clause. Players agents negotiate whether a player gets a release clause built into their contracts. So some players have them and some don't. Sometimes a player won't agree to play for a team if not given one. Sometimes a team will not take a player with a release clause in the contract. Smaller teams often get highly rated young players to put really big release clauses on and flip to up their revenue for business reasons and for reinvestment in new players. For example Moises Caicedo does not have a release clause. The 21 year old Ecuadorian came to England to play for Brighton. Brighton I'd a small team with excellent scouting. They bought him for 6 million pounds( roughly 7.5 million dollars) 2 years ago. Homeboy has balled out and is now considered one of the best in his position. They now are asking big teams to pay 100 million pounds for him. They will buy more players with that sum and pocket cash. They also just sold a player named Macalister who had a great year and won the World Cup with Argentina. They paid around 8M if memory serves me. His estimated worth was around 55-60m do to the crazy market currently in England. They had to let him go for 35m bc Liverpool activated his release clause. So win some lose some on that front.

There is, the League Win, the Cup Win, The Champions League Win/Europa League Win, the Cup Winners Cup (Played between the League and Cup Winners of each individual national league) The UEFA Cup Winners (Played between the Champions League and Europa League Winners) and then there is the Club World Cup (Elimination tournament played between the Six Confederation Champions), so you can if you have a squad of literal demigods, score a Sextuple Title. It's something of a thing, to manage that though.

My 5-year-old kid is already a signed player who has 2 training day in a week. In Hungary, most preschools has opportunity for football education. I never forced him to play.
Notts County a English team went from what was then League four up to league one and went all the way back down to League four in successive seasons.
All teams have a main team(1st team) that plays in the main competitions. They have a reserve team and then age groups for younger players as well.

In Germany there are tons of kids and youth soccer clubs.
Like the job church does in the US keeping kids from the streets and stupid shit, in Germany small low leagues and they do play their tournaments. That's where bigger clubs look for talent.
Typically at age 17 you can go into a youth team and play youth tournaments, BUT if you are an absolute monster, you might be invited to play and train with the main team.
However for that you need to be a monster on the pitch AND have top grades in school, which I personally really appreciate.
Like Manuel Neuer, long time German Goalie has worked as a maths tutor. Simply because he was good at it and tutored other players in his homeclub Schalke 04 because they, with their maths grades wouldn't have been able to stay in the adult team.
That by the way is something you will find about many players who started professional soccer young. They are well-spoken and intelligent. Because if they hadn't been, they wouldn't have been allowed to start their career when they did or at all.
It all starts with some boys in the neighborhood, playing soccer on the street or backyard,, when about 6 years old some join nearby local clubs, which exists in every city quarter or smallest village, with compete in the lowest leagues. They're the best players need some luck, to get scouted from a scout in a higher lead,then to next higher league and so on. And when you are really really good you jump steps to initially higher leaves faster. And then there is somthing above all that, that is the national teams . They are recruited from the best players in a country from different clubs and compete in international championships like european championship ever 4 Years or world championhips 2 years later also ever 4 years. Those are held up in big tournaments of 2 0r 3 weeks.
UEFA and CONMEBOL are the biggest ones. Look at the FIFA World Cup winners and you get the deal.
I am sure UEFA and CONMEBOL have made deal where South American teams will join the UEFA nations league.

I think another issue in the US is the "pay to play" system for football, which makes it slightly expensive for working class folk to get into it, unlike in Europe or South America where its pretty much a given that even people in poverty will get into the sport.

This video is great in most specifics, but it makes it sound like release clauses are standard. They are not. The agents of the players need to negotiate them into contracts when they talk with teams. Very useful to have tho. For example, a young talent who is very highly valued and probably the next big thing can sign a contract with a smaller club in order to get more playing time than if they had to compete for a spot with the superstars of a big club. And then, after a year or two of developing, they can move on to a big club and play there thanks to the release clause.
